Maintaining grip on the deadlift

PoweredUp

Banned
I'm at the point where I need some assistance in order to keep a firm grip on my deadlifts, and gloves just aren't getting the job done. I was thinking about picking up some chalk or a rosin bag. Does anyone have any recommendations on one versus the other?

Loose the gloves and use chalk.
Try a over / under grip - one hand over the bar, the other under the bar.
I've always used the mixed grip. It's just now that I'm inching closer to 400 pounds and niether my bare hands or gloves can keep a firm grasp of the bar. It typically starts to slip around the 4th rep and I know that I still have a solid 1-2 reps left that I'm leaving on the gym floor. Hopefully the chalk will solve the problem!

I like the chalk, myself. If its a big problem and you dont want to use straps or anthing like that, there are some grip exercises you can do.
Just ordered a pound of gym chalk off of eBay for $8.99. Should be here in a week or so. Can't wait to give it a go.

A fellow lifter at my gym is actively pursuing an 800# deadlift and his sole limiting factor is grip.

In particular, I have noticed him performing two motions to improve his grip.

The first motion is double-overhand deadlifts.

The second motion is an special grip exercise. To perform this exercise, he graps a thick handle, which is connected to a metal plate with a tube (structually similar to a sled) and on which plates are loaded, and holds the weight up until the handle slips out of his hand.

As you do not have a similar apparatus, I am not sure how you would employ the second exercise, but I felt I would share what I know.

Kroncke

use a double overhand hook grip as long until you fail, that will help strength your grip, then switch to mixed. plate pinches like kroncke mention will work great too. but you will see a huge improvement with the chalk, you will probably not have anymore issues when you use it.

no straps not allowed

dont use a mixed grip until you have to. You build grip strength using double over hand. sometimes i switch during my set when my grip starts to go

Do you have good bars at your gym? Olympic bars usually suck, the knurling ain't like it should be.

Olympic bars are standard....offcourse you have those thin cheap bars, but they're not that good

there is a video on youtube of Jouko Ahola grip training. Haven't tried the method personally.

Can you get us the link bro?

Chalk adds 20% to all lifts including tricep kick backs. Learn to hook grip. High rep DB rows. Hex head DB holds. Wrist roller with chains. Rack pulls with five second holds at the top. Continue to pull weekly. Do Farmer walks. Anything with a thick bar. When using an alternating grip switch hand positions with each set. Good luck pull fast.

Triceps kickbacks?!?!

You've got to be kidding me. We're talking about power moves here....and power lifting...what's dead moves like kickbacks got to do with it?!

Pls don't think I'm flaming or anything, just find it weird that you bring triceps kickbacks into this...
