Living with Bi Polar and NOT taking meds

New Jack

New member
Is it possible for someone who is 22 years old, to have bi polar disorder and depression and live a nice well productive life WITHOUT taking ANY psych meds?

not in my opinion.. you have a chem imbalance that needs drugs to be corrected... if not, you'll have the highs and lows.

i don't know that therapy would help in managing it... but it might not be a bad idea.

musclebrains is really the man to talk to though.

for a while until they slowly sink into a depression. are they more up or down? why dont they want to take their meds? its a really bad idea.

Speaking from a completely non-medical, inexperienced standpoint: why not?

Just cause a doc diagnoses you with something and says you need meds doesn't mean it's true to the extent he puts it. Shit, if I'd go see a doc now I have no doubt that I'd be diagnosed with ADD when in fact there's nothing wrong with me. Same shit has happened to a friend who has actually gone on meds.

warik... it's totally not the same as add

with bipolar you have extreme highs and lows... it's not as hard to diagnose as add can be...

and it can be very dangerous to not medicate it.

It's nowhere near the same as ADD. Bi-polar people have a much higher incidence of suicide than any other psychological disorder, including full on depression and schizophrenia.

In fact, I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that left untreated, you will end up killing yourself. I am not sure of that, but I took a ton of psych classes, and I think that is pretty much the truth.

I'm sure it's not like ADD but I was just using an example since I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head.

If what everyone else is saying is true, then of course take their advice.

I've just always been a believer in the idea that people can cure themselves of any kind of depression or mental condition and don't need docs or drugs or any of that stuff... we have not yet begun to even remotely understand the capabilities of the mind.

if it's a shame thing... don't even go there. it's completely normal to be on antidepressants... MILLIONS of people are - i am for the moment.

it's like someone i know said to me once when i was feeling embarassed about being on antideps.... if you had a broken arm you'd get a cast... if you have a chemical imbalance, you get medication. it's the same thing. :)

i hope that makes you more comfortable with it.

I am 20 years old, and am as productive as i can be and i live with a severe case of this disorder. it is a battle, not often easily won but it is quite possible.
