For maximum growth you need to eat bigger...BUT, you can still have great benefits from a clean, moderate diet and lifting. My first year lifting I didn't eat big...just fairly clean and at about 2500-3000 cals a day. I didn't get big and bulky...I got lean and ripped. It all depends on what your goals are. Now I'm trying to put on some size so I eat much bigger and I'm gaining size, but also putting on some extra fat. Ultimatley I'll have to cut down because I want the lean ripped look...not the soft bulky look.
