Lifting hooks

Tatyana

Elite Mentor
My grip strength has improved dramatically over the years, but it still doesn't match up with what I can do on deads, or I just don't get enough reps in before the bar starts to slip.

I have gloves and straps, and I am also now thinking of getting some hooks now that I am doing doggcrapp and I will be going pretty freaking heavy for at least one set.

Pros and cons?

Anyone else use them?

I can't comment on hooks, so I'm sorry to butt in, but do you have access to a trap bar? Since your wrists are straight at your side and the handles for the bar are of a smaller diameter it gives you a distinct mechanical advantage and you can handle higher weights.

I've never used them, but I can't imagine hooks being any superior to wraps seeing as they both take grip strength out of the equation.

weird i was just talking to my friend about this telling him he should get hooks because he uses the straps but he said he doesnt want to take grip strength completely out of the equation.

and whats with everyone jumping on dc training, i find it to light of a workout.

Anyway heres a secret for great forearms/grip not many people do. Buy a bag of sand, a bucket, and get some water. Mix them all in the bucket. get the sand nice and wet and then start to squeeze the sand and while squeezing it move your wrists around in the sand in circular and up/down motions.

another method is to grab hold of a pull up bar curl your wrists inward and just hang from it. this will increase your grip very well.

use an over/under hand grip. this allows me to dead/pull a ton more. i think its called romanian grip???

Yeah if your have a double overhand grip its gonna fail early tat. You need a reverse grip (one palm forward, the other backward). I can pull in the mid 5's with no slippage but im lucky to pull 315 with double over.

Hey,

I posted up a tread a little while ago on the subject - yeah, they are awesome!! My grip strength is nowhere near what I need for deads, hooks are the persfect option. yeah, you may sacrifice a litte handstrength, but the overall extra mass makes up for it.

Make sure you but the ones with the "wider" hooks - first pair a bought didnt fit properly around the bar

bc they suck lol, use straps or reverse grip. Also totally forgot but are you guys using chalk? Makes a world of diff, i cant workout without it.

lol, well hooks work better than straps or reverse grip for me, so il keep usin em. But never tried chalk, will give it a whirl.

PS Hooks with a reverse grip is even better :-)

lol, i would not be caught dead with those things. I have yet to see anyone use them.

Yes I use reverse grip, I have chalk for rock climbing, I may try that.

I wouldn't use them all the time, as I want to build up my grip, but every now and then I am annoyed as I know I could lift more.

The MIXED GRIP helps a lot specially if you use a low quality olympic bar, but don't forget to switch it between sets. I've used lifting hooks in the past and IMO opinion they were great add to my last set on deads.

Also you should consider using heavy hand grippers if you want to increase grip strength. And I know that you check CP's articles already, increasing grip strength will increase your poundage on other lifts almost instantly.

I use hooks all the time. There is know way I can pull 500lb deads for 5 reps without them and I definitely can't pull 600 without them. I'd be lucky to do one. I use them for deads only pull downs, rows or pulley rows or any other back I don't.
I have no issue about using them they let me take my focus off my hands and focus on the lifts. I have a very good back and good thick fourarms. No one has ever commented on me using them. Use em they help.
Also I use both overhand grips to ensure balances strength and development

Light?? Doesn't sound like DC training at all to me. :)

Chalk is good. When I go heavier I use straps and I use a double pronated grip as I really don't want a torn bicep.

you already stated the cons.. it will not increase your wrist strength..

but

how strong do we want the wrists to be??

I started using them 2 yrs ago.. hooks that is, and they are great, built a great back and created width i never had before..

so do i like them?? 100%

also the support on the wrists will help in all your lifts..

another problem with hooks and straps (although a bit less with straps) is that if you stall on a lift...or, tear your bicep on the supinated grip side (if using a pronated/supinated grip), and you need to DROP the weight quickly...you're stuck with it and you have to go down with it if you're hooked to it. This will feel even worse to whatever part gave out in the first place as to not allow you to get the pull (back/bicep/etc.).

Check out that YouTube video I put in my last post...watch his bicep tear and roll up his arm.

I would love to try out a trap bar.

I may see if one of my gyms will get one.

+ 1

While it is not the same, it is not far off the premise of Mike Menzer and HIT (high intensity training) and Dorian training.

i tried hooks. i bought 2 sets that fit different. the problem i had with both was i either had to hold all the weight myself or let the hooks get ripped right off my wrist. that velcro will not hold the weight on its own. i think i was doing 405 deads at the time. i have small hands and i couldnt find hooks that fit right to save my life. here is a thought what if you made your own straps with the same material but you made them longer? i made mine out of leather. if you look up leather crafting you could easily find the leather, heavy thread, and needle.

Here's another plus for hooks. Today I pulled my best ever a satisfying 607 Lbs. I would not have been able to hold that at all.
I always do a max lift once a month on all groups to see if there has been progress.

Off the thread, I have to say that your avatar is awesome! She looks a brazillian go-go dancer. Sorry couldn't resist...

For those that use straps, which manufacturer do you rate?

I have gone through 5 or 6 pairs of straps...I'll buy any strap that is 100% cotton, a single pieces, and double stitched at the seam should not cost more than 10 US dollars. All straps of this type are virtually the same no matter the brand, the only difference maybe the suppleness of the straps

Get the ironmind straps and you will never need to buy another pair again.

I quite like my Schiek padded straps.

BK, you may be angry, but I think I am going to have to get these Inzer wrist hooks.

I have to order from the States, it doesn't appear that any of the UK power lifting or strongmen sites actually sell lifting hooks, and the rest I have seen look completely pants.

I would also like another pair of gloves, but ones that have slightly longer fingers that Schiek gloves.

I have very long fingers, elegant hands, I am quite pleased with how much my wrists and grip has improved, it used to be seriously, seriously, diabolically bad.

Ok, Inzer straps and pants straps.

I have seen worse than the hookie ones, with neoprene covering and half hooks

The ones I used in the past was in Europe, they were made with leather and very solid! I think the owner of the gym got them there.

www.prowriststraps.com

APT stuff. Straps, hand grippers, hooks, braces, wraps, sleeves, belts, fractional plates, chains, singlets...you name it, they got it. Highest quality.

+1 for straps and double overhand grip.

That vid of Ano rolling his bicep is enough to make me not pull with a pro/sup grip. Actually... I pull most of my warm ups wiht a pro/sup grip before I switch to straps. We're talking light sets of 3-6 though. No limit maxes without straps.

DC is light!!!!! Yeah Budddyyyy!!!! Lightweight!!!!

I use wrist hooks and luv em.
They wash up well but don't throw them in the dryer. They will shrink.

static holds
Do one rep when you get to the top grip it and just hold it untill you can no longer hold it be it 1 minute 2 minutes 3 minutes how ever long it takes, untill the hands get numb untill the muscle fatigue ( try it on a day a few days ahead of your deadlift day)
The body will relize you are going to be holding weight for a long period of time and the nurological system adapts by telling the arms , hands, wrist what ever muscles and body parts are invloved to strenghten.

try it tat , untill your forarms explode, untill your hands go numb . I know it will help

I'm lucky i never had problems with grip, i dont really even train it directly and i can pull over 600 w/o straps and no sign of fatigue.

For some reason I don't think you have the same delicate long fingers and elegant artist's hands that I have.

:)

If DC is too light of a workout for you then you were not doing it right

Exactly!!!

Which basically means he wasn't doing DC (I just didn't want to say that).

(did I just say that?) :D

dude that shit just aint right man....of course I had to look really close to see the second time around...If your building for form I don't see how having 12 inch powerlifter wrists will help

Tat if your yankin 600 lbs I admire the man that marries you!! OR am more than willing to throw in my application :D
