Late night carbs

Paolo

New member
Ive been trying to gain about 12lbs of muscle, but even tho im eating about 1000cals more than i was, i seem to be stuck on the same weight.

If i were to eat a nice big bowl of cheerios with skimmed milk before bed each night would this help me gain lean muscle or would it be turned into body fat?

I tend to get a sweet tooth late on as most of the stuff im eating is savoury, and i really love cereal.

If this isnt a good idea, please let me know some sweet items that are ok to eat late on

Let me know

Thanks

Sugar is generally not good unless its post workout or your bulking. Even when your bulking you should avoid excess sugar. Try cottage cheese or some nuts at night.

Do you like Oatmeal? I have a mad sweet tooth also, so I add Splenda to it and it does the trick for me!

Im not sure if i do like oatmeal mate, cos i aint sure what it is.

Im from England and we dont have oatmeal over here, under that name. Im guessing it might be called porridge over here.

When i was in my local superstore i checked the nutritional information on porridge and it didnt seem that much different to say corn flakes or cheerios to me.

is there a hidden difference? ie simple carbs as opposed to complex?

let me know

Beside your carb question, the problem might be something different. You sure "1000 cals more than before" it is enough for you when bulking? What are your stats: Weight and BF%, and how many cals were you eating before (for how long) and how many you eat now.

Your real problem is not wanting to eat those cheerios, but not gaining weight, so let's look at the whole diet.

What we call porridge I believe is oatmeal... I eat a bowl of porridge every night before bed, to release a steady slow carb flow throughout the night, but I guess it depends if your cutting or bulking.. I havn`t noticed a huge weight increase with porridge at night to be honest, but it has squashed the hunger at night...
Other things you may wanna try as "snax" inbetween if you get hungry is peanuts, or flapjacks.. the flapjacks are cheap in supermarkets and have a whole stack of goodies in them...
Just a couple of things you can try... :)

If you have old fashioned porridge (oatmeal) plain, it is on the low GI spectrum as opposed to other processed carbs and cereals. Your concern should be with the effect the carbs will have on your blood sugar levels.

I do crackers and cottage cheese at night, but is cherrios that bad? Most cereals are loaded with sugar, but I think cherrios are a lot better than say, fruity pebbles or cocoa puffs...Or the grandaddy of them all, Sugar Smacks!!

cheerios are bad because they are so processed and because of that they are high on th GI scale. Most don't want a insulin spike like that right before bed but every one is different. I know people that eat junk all day and up to right before they go to bed and don't have a problem. a slower release of carbs is better for controlling fat gain. Of course it comes to down to calories too.

Thanks guys

ill get some porridge (oatmeal) and try that. To be honest i havent been that bad since i posted avout the cheerios. Ive been having meat or peanuts instead, i know they are pretty ok

fat free cottage cheese and almonds is my choice, especially nights that i work (bartend), so some before to last that 3-4 span without eating, then some more right after we close, does the trick for me.

I'm diggin this Porridge word, I'm going to start calling Oatmeal Porridge! It sounds so cool!!!

I still believe we should look at this problem from a more hollistical point of view. Don't think the cheerios issue will solve the bigger problem.

Hi again

I bought some rolled oats from my local store. They were well cheap and when i did compare them to the box of cheerios i was surprised by the difference in carbs that sugar.

Im gonna eat a bowl of this stuff for breakfast, then at night if i feel the need.

Im getting the hang of this diet thing now.

IMHO, unless you are really a TRUE hardgainer, you don't need the oats before bed. However, if you train late night, nix the previous statement and replenish those stores. Stick with a slow release protein and some efa's.......
