Wal-Mart Looks To Develop Land At Blue Ridge Mall
Agreement Not Quite A 'Done Deal'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rumors about changes to the Blue Ridge Mall have been confirmed. It will likely soon become the site of the area's newest Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Shannon Sperry, the assistant manager for the mall, said the new store will dwarf its counterparts.
"My knowledge at this time is that it will be the largest Wal-Mart Supercenter in the nation," she said.
The groundbreaking could occur by Jan. 1, 2005. The site will be just east of the mall between the main entrance and the Blue Ridge Tower.
"It's a huge redevelopment and will go a long way to pushing the revitalization of the 40 Highway corridor," Sperry said.
And revitalization is something the mall has needed for some time, KMBC's Donna Pitman reported. Only a few tenants take up the space that has been around for decades.
"I started coming here in '58, when it was an outdoor mall," said Max Richardson, who still frequents the mall, if only to exercise.
"Of course, they're going to strip malls now. Young people like to drive up and shop. Older people like us, we like to go in and sit down," said Jim Lockhart, another mall regular.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson said the company has been interested in the land for years, but a purchase agreement was just signed within the last month. But there are several more steps in the process before it will be considered a "done deal," Pitman reported.
