Have you ever tried kava-kava (Piper methysticum) as a remedy for insomnia ?

I've used it - it helps a little bit but I can't stand the smell of it (tea or pill form).

Diphenhydromine. Works for me.

An antihistamine / Parkinson's Disease drug to fall asleep ? :mix:
Well, why not but I'd rather stick to more natural stuff

Thanx anyway :)

I've taken kava-kava for sleep, it does work and it's more mild than some other things I've taken....it gets you nice, relaxed and drowsy. I didn't notice any smell with kava-kava - but Valerian Root - now that's some stinky stuff. I think the valerian works slightly better for me than the kava for sleep, if you can get over the smell of it.

gypsy - do you remember what dose you used for kava-kava? How long before "bedtime" do you take it? Do you need a full night's sleep (~8 hours) so you don't feel sluggish the next day?

I'd like to find something that doesn't make me feel drowsy the next morning - off 5-6 hours of sleep. Something I can take after *trying* to fall asleep for awhile. I hesitiate to take anything (even melatonin) unless I have 8 hours to sleep.

It's hard to remember what I took, it was a while ago - before I started using "hard core" stuff like Ambien. I believe I took 2 capsules of the Vitamin Shop brand kava, so 500mg. What time you take it depends on your schedule - I always take sleep aids at about 9:00pm, so I can sit and let it metabolize, then get to bed no later than 10pm. I also didn't feel groggy from it the next day. I've never taken it later, after I've realized I wouldn't be able to fall asleep for that very reason - I don't want to feel groggy in the morning and didn't want to chance it - so I always leave ample time for sleep. Daisy, you don't have children, right? You should aim for 8 hours sleep!! You can get it, I know you can :) I have insomnia problems, but I've become pretty good at foretelling when I may have a problem falling asleep, so I just take something to be safe on those nights. Are you opposed to getting some Ambien from your doctor? You can always take a half of a pill, it will be more mild. You can get away with 7 hours sleep with Ambien, and your not groggy at all the next morning. I love it. You can get them online too, but I'd advise getting them from a foreign pharmacy, it's much cheaper. Like 30 pills for $50, then if you only take halves, they last much longer. I only need them...7 days a month I'd say? Hormone fluxes (PMS) are usually my cause of insomnia, or if I have something bothering or some type of stress. So if I'm sitting there stressing about something at 9:00 - I pop an Ambien.

i'm with gypsy on this, and take the shorter route with trazadone, diephendramine, etc.

but i wish i could solve the route of the problem, but i guess its just too long a route to travel. i need short term solutions unfortunately.

Ambien, though effective, is not a solution to insomnia

Just a quick and dirt patch :worried:

But you can't rely on it on a daily basis for a long time and even those drugs can be of some benefit for your sleeping issues they will cause other issues (side effects)

While kava-kava has been used throughout the Polynesian Islands for thousands of years
It is safe, non addictive and natural

Maybe MS could tell us what she thinks about it, as she may have some on her island :)

I find that Valerian works best for me - there's something I just tried @ GNC called "Sleep Formula" that works ok too, it has Valerian and a couple other things. I just got some Kava actually, but haven't tried it for sleep. Of course, it's like 100 degrees in Portland today, so sleep isn't coming easy no matter what. God I miss Philly and air conditioning!
