my gym teachs muay thai (kickboxing) and brazilian jiu jitsu. i only have enough money for one. should i take mt and practise ground fighting techniques seperately with the other dudes in there? or should i take bjj and practise, punches, knees, kicks, elbows sperately with the other dudes there? i didnt post this in the MA forum cuz i dont have 2 days to wait for a reply. thnx.

Maybe you should also try to make up those assignments that you missed, thinking that school ended a week earlier than it did! I still don't know how you managed to do that, LOL.

As for the actual question, I dunno. ;)

@ jaded- oh yeah i did. for once in my life i didnt procrastinate and read the books so i quickly made up a few essays, since i have this natural talent for writing :D. so hopefully it turns out ok. i have finals in a few weeks though? i think you guys have your finals soon as well, i could be wrong though.

@ sublime- I like both! :worried:

i would recommend learning grappling from the instructor and trying to pick up the MT on the side..

if you do bjj you will/should learn some basic standing skills so at least you will have some standing abilities.. if you go w/ just MT you wont have any ground game

good luck

tom: you think i can be a good enough striker if i punch the bag every day, kick, elbow and sparr with the muay thai guys? i want to be like 60 percent ground, 40 percent striking cuz ive been in probably 7-10 fights in my life and they usually always end up on the ground. so my philosophy is ground and pound and i will need strong, fast, brutal punches for that. thanks.

it depends on what you are training for...self defense? just for fun?

a majority of the time in street fights are spent on the ground so if i had to choose between the two i would choose ground fighting

if you can however end it quick while on your feet there is no ground fighting
....most of the time however fights are spent more on the ground than on your feet

good luck

yeah thats my opinion.

before starting formal training it was much easier for me to pick up striking techinques just by practicing with a friend who was training formally.

when i tried the same approach with grappling it didnt work out.. now i had never grappled at all before so maybe that had something to do with it.. but prior to the stiking training the only experience i had was some littel fights when i was a young kid (10-12)

i think if you are able to spar with the MT guys and if they are willing to help your technique a bit a long the way then you will be good to go..

is this all under one gym? if so you should be able to mix it up a bit here and there..

I think judo is right, bjj is so technical, id take that class, plus striking practiced with a good, knowledgeable partner can be learned just about anywhere

it would be better for u to start off the thai boxing then switch over.First u must understand the mechanics of how strikes are thrown to grapple agaisnt them.plus it would give u a solid clinch for when u start bjj. I would like to comment that all street fights don't go to the ground. That was some bjj bs sales tactic that everyone bought.
