Is there a way to do sumo DLs without f&*King up your shins?

Been reading up on sumos and it seems everybody that does then does so at the expense of their shins. Is there anyone on here that does sumos and does not fuck up their shins or the fronts of their thighs (on the knurling)?

i mess up my shins regardless of my stance. when i drive my head and chest up, naturally the bar drags up my legs.

sorry, im no help

but....classy tube socks could alleviate the problem a bit. make sure you get the really long ones with the stripes on top. :D

I think I am going to stick to conventionals. I want to attract attention to my thick back, not my dented shins. Eventually I will buy a trap bar and do my DLs with that.

sumo's put a lot less pressure on my back. I have never had a problem hitting my shins with those really but I scratch the shit out of my lower quads. For conventional I tried wearing sweatpants and it still looked like someone ran a cheese grater along my leg. Looks like I am gonna have to invest in some shin guards now.

Old man dress socks work really well, the bar slides right off of them. I rub baby powder into the surface of the socks at meets, and my shins are barely even red afterwards. You also might want to consider more bar speed instead of dragging it along your shins :)

I always wear a Nike break-away pants when i deadlift ..They are really slick and reduce pretty much any friction between you and the bar.. Then after Deads you can just yank them off.. My problem is figuring how to keep from bruising my shins.. When I start a heavy dead I have the bar over my toes so I can pull back more than up and the bar tends to have a violent collision with my shins... Oh well.....

I asked the same thing two days ago. Best advice I got was to wrap the part of the bar that touches the shin with an ace bandage.

I haven't tried it yet. Sunday.

I'll wear sweat pants when I deadlift to protect the shins, but I still get a lot of redness and scrapes in the quads from the knurl grinding into my legs.

SG--are you telling me I should have used the search function?!?!??!! Thanks for the advice. I definitely agree padding is best used on the bar and not the legs (my fronts of my quads get fucked up too).

It made me think: you know those gay-ass padded collars that pussies (or mullets with no traps) use to squat? My gym has three. I wonder if I could incorporate those into my sumos. Hmmm....

As far as trap bars you can DL more because you are not bent over as much so you can use your legs more than your erectors.

Thanks for all the answers guys, karma is on the way.

That is a good idea. I don't know why I never thought of that.

I used to have to peel the damn thing off half the time to do my deads.

I think the main issue would be keeping them in place; if your stance is wide enough just pushing them outwards against the collars would work. Otherwise you could just hope they stay in place.

Let's try it and compare notes.

Hey y'all. I tried the padded collar thing and it worked pretty well. No shin damage. I just had them pushed out against the collars and used a wide stance so my shins were in front of the pads.

Anyways now the issue is just how the weight hits my muscles and hips differently, and, most importantly, holding on despite my knees trying to scrape my inward hand off the bar.

I noticed if I lean forward more, thus using my back more, my hand gets by my knee better. However the whole point of sumos is to keep the bar closer to your center of gravity. SO I don't know.

I pull sumo, and don't touch my shins. My feet areturned out 45 degrees though, and my hips are turned out too. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Like Spatts I don't hit my shins either pulling sumo. And I pull with my feet at 45 deg as well as straight. Still playing with positioning a little

I see. I meant to ask whether the angles are different for a woman's lower body structure than for a man's. I guess the 45 degrees out thing works for both. I'll try it next time but I also know everybody's body mechanics are different.

I honestly haven't ever seen anyone sumo dead with toes forward...but I haven't seen everyone deadlift. So, take that for the little it seems to be worth. :D

lol...well It does feel a bit odd..But I feel like I can get my hips forward faster that way.. But on the downside I don't feel like I can utilize my lower back as well... I tend to experiment with form changes on my lighter sets..
