St. Clair Sheriff's Department makes arrests in Internet drug buying case

Authorities with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department arrested and charged two men with possession of a controlled substance after they received a package believed to contain steroids and drugs from Brazil over the Internet.
Arrested were James Wayne Chance, 35, and Wesley Adam Yarbrough, 21, both from the Birmingham area.
According to St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles, U.S. Customs called and told them they had intercepted a package addressed to the Ashville area.
"They said it was not a large enough quantity to work and they wanted to know if we were interested," Surles said. "I told them most definitely."
Surles said U.S. Customs brought the drugs to the Sheriff's Department, and local officers delivered the drugs to the residence.
"It was during this time we found that Yarbrough was responsible for ordering the drugs over the Internet, and we followed them to their meeting place, which was the Argo BP," Surles said.
The two men were arrested Aug. 10 at the Argo BP.
Surles said he and his department also learned during the investigation that the supplier in Brazil could be shipping more than 100,000 orders of steroids per month.
In the package confiscated, authorities found 52 small bottles of liquid steroids and about 100 pills.
"These are the type steroids body builders use," Surles said. "The two guys arrested are body-builders."
The entire shipment confiscated by the Sheriff's Department was valued at about $3,000.
Possession of a controlled substance is a Class C felony, and if convicted, Chance and Yarbrough could face from one year and one day to 10 years in prison.
Both men were taken to the St. Clair County Jail in Ashville but were released on $5,000 bond each.
Surles said that, to the best of his knowledge, this is the first time steroids and drugs ordered over the Internet have been intercepted in St. Clair County.
"The investigators did a great job with this case," Surles said. "We are still attempting to wipe out the drug problem in St. Clair County."
