Importance of learning to pass guard

My instructor is a Gracie/Barra guy. I am just starting. He said me and two other beginners must drill millions of times passing the guard. (Goose hand on waist, straight arm. Head, chest up straight. Right leg up, left leg chicken wing out, explode up with hips, clench own ear, grasp down on opponents leg, sprawl, grab other leg, drive straight, spin and take side mount.) Don't know if this makes any sense, I'm probably saying it wrong. But how important is this. If he says I should do it, I will, he seems to be VERY knowledgeable. Just wondering what this could lead into eventually. He said drilling this is how you get good. Thanks guys.

Drilling is ofcourse the number one way to get good. Guard passes are soo important for BJJ. In a match, its like a chess game and ultimately its someone with better technique and game plan who wins. And some really sneaky strategies are to purposely fall into someone's guard only to pass it and pull off some crazy submission. BTW, GRACIE BARRA FOR LIFE! Representn Carlos Gracie JR to DA FULLEST. Sorry, I had to say it.

you have to drill to build your skills.

but you also have to mix in sparring to do the same.

at my school we try to mix it about 50% drills or practice and then 50% sparring

it depends on your goals
if you are straight BJJ you need to guardpass (need to learn all aspects of BJJ to the best of your abilities really) but if you are into MMA it depends on how well you GnP from Guard

want to sharpen muay thai and bjj skills and then eventually bring it together for MMA. I got time, only 22 and my camp isn't going anywhere and neither am I.

Well, in Ju Jitsu there is not a single submission that anyone with any experience will tap out to while you are in guard. There is actually far more moves from the bottom position. So the only thing to do while in guard is pass guard. Once he drills you on that, he will then show you everything you can do from there.

Unless it is MMA, then you can GNP.

that's not necessarily true
if you stack them fast they could tap while your still technically in thier guard
depending on weight and everything that probubly wouldn't work for a littler guy but a heavyweight stacking is bad
also does BJJ allow slams?

The kimura or keylock can be obtained while in someones guard.

Neck crank as well. Also collar and kata game chokes can be applied from while in somones guard. Even if you do MMA though never underestimate guard passing since everyone and their grandmother in MMA these days seem to have the ability to pull off a decent guard.

rare things can happen but if you beat someone while in there guard then you probably couldve beaten them from almost any position.. and you still wouldve been safer and more effective if you passed the guard and obtained a better position.

when in the guard you have to work to get out.. not try for submissions.. more then likely trying submissions will get you tapped or get you rolled..
