I want a deprivation chamber

I ran into an interesting article today about how therapeutic deprivation/float chambers are. It talks about how when all senses are muted the brain continues to function but in an almost dreamlike state and time becomes obsolete. It's supposed to be great for stress, pain, insomnia and everything that comes along with those among other benefits. Has anyone ever been in one?

I'd love to get totally fogged out and float in there for a couple hours. I'm looking into trying it out at a lock wellness center with my wife and we like it will look into buying one.

I'm not in the least bit surprised at her experience (article was written by a chic). Considering that an enormous amount of people in our country have some kind of nearly constant outside input stimulating their minds they have no idea what it's like to be inside their own heads with only their own thoughts. I tried to teach a newbie group of people in their late teens and 20s to meditate and it was like trying to teach my cat to say the alphabet. They couldn't do it, got disgusted and frustrated and gave up in about 20 minutes. A deprivation tank artificially creates certain aspects of deep meditation. It could be a big mental shock.

IOW, Pdaddy, this is definitely a try before you buy item. And I would advise to not get fogged before doing it.

From what I've been reading this guy is the exception. I think a lot depends on how open you are going into this and your ability to 'let go' and detach body from mind. I think some people are just incapable of this...even with the help of a deprivation tank. Everyone's experience will be different. I think mine would be pretty good since I consider myself an introspective person.

I totally agree with this. Finding them to start ~10k brand new it is FOR SURE a try before you buy.

Didn't they once do studies of people on acid inside these years ago?

Yep, big in the late 60s and 70s. I got curious and did some Googling of my own. Here's another person's experience, which was totally positive, that includes a little of the history and people who came up with and studied the concept of sensory deprivation.

Sensory deprivation, flotation tanks: I floated naked in a pitch black tank, and you should too.

I tried meditation. Felt like I was going to have a meltdown and snap someone's neck.
I'm surprised! I thought with all the prayer, fasting and personal discipline in your faith meditation would come easily.

Whoa racist!
I fail to see how acknowledging Alcatraz is a Muslim and that his faith requires discipline is racist. If going 30 days not consuming any food or water from surnise to sunset isn't a definition of personal discipline I don't know what is. I've gone five days without consuming any calories I can't go more than an hour without drinking water. Three and I'm parched as hell.

From your posts you seem like the type that could use a few hours of floating in silence and darkness, might chill out that temper of yours.

Lol @ you taking that so serious.

And no, I will pass on the bullshit therapeutic meditation whateverit'scalled. I can deal with life the way a normal adult can. Shit happens, I don't need hours of silence to keep me from freaking out.

like MM said, these were big in the late 60's early 70's, pretty much everywhere, then they went by the wayside. I never used one myself, but knew people who did, some really thought it was cool, others just couldn't get into the whole thing....

Eh, that's one of my problems on this board, I honestly can't tell when people are kidding if they don't give a clue with an emoticon or a J/K or something.

And your second paragraph pretty much sums up what I ran across in teaching newbs to meditate. Until you've experienced being in control of your thoughts versus the other way around there's kind of no way to explain the value. One of the benefits is it turns the volume down on day to day stressors. It can literally chill out the near constant state of fight or flight many people exist in our society, reducing anxiety and cortisol levels. That's a medically proven fact.

Sounds interesting.

I heard the sound chambers where they test high end speakers drives people mad. There's video out there of people sitting in it and they are designed to be so sound isolating and silent that you hear the inner working of your body and it just creeps people out since we don't hear it in our day to day.

Still I'll try anything once.

That may be true and probably beneficial to many people who can't cope with day to day life

But honestly I have zero stress in my life. My wife and I make good money with zero debt, have an amazing daughter, live in a nice home on plenty of property, and are pretty much in control of every aspect of our lives.

I'm right where I need to be. Playing in the floor with Alli is plenty relaxation for me

why are you so mad then?

I'm not lol I like to fuck with a couple of the shitbags here because it's funny. Doesn't mean I need to go run and hide in a dark box for the rest of the day

I go sit in the woods for a few hours when I need to be left alone

it's a bonus of I bring home some meat

No shit. Sitting in a deer stand or duck blind is all the quiet I can handle.

Plus you get to shoot the fuck out of something

I can build you a sound and light proof box for less than 10 fucking k also

your wife is def going to shoot this down anyway

I showed her the literature and a couple videos about an hr ago. She asked how much they were, I said if you want a nice one they'll start around 12K. Her response: "Well I have another bonus coming soon." Fuck yea. I'm going to shoot some heroin before I get in...to help me relax.

Fill it with organic vegetable broth, 72 virgins will appear before you shoving cucumbers in their twats while they hand feed you salad.

Can i deprivate?

We came home from vacation with that weird fucker on our patio.

Animal control said it's a monkey. Someone's pet that got out.

Who the fuck owns monkeys?

Wtf is this? Can I eat this??
That's a Saki monkey, native to South America, totally edible. The natives would knock them out of the trees with curare blow darts.

... as for the dumb fucking bastards that keep them as pets -- assholes like that deserve to have their faces chewed off. I fucking hate people keeping wild things as pets. Either kill it and turn it into dinner or leave it the hell where it belongs.

If being in an environment where you are surrounded by nothingness and an absolute lack of stimulation, people should just sit-in on a few public school classes.
