How often would it be advised for me to get in the gym per week to work on strength training? I dont want to put on muscle per say, but I want to improve my running times.
 
Strength training has no direct link to increased marathon performance... It's not directly applied and transferred. The greater the distance the smaller the role of strength.

However, it is important in maintaining muscle mass and strengthening, that is, the idea to use strength training is to minimize the risks of running injuries.

Use strength training as a physical therapy. Training 3 times a week is more than enough for your case and away from the practice of running.
