Effectiveness against pregnancy, to my knowledge, is the same as with latex condoms. They're made out of sheep intestines or something, which have been used as condoms since god only knows when, a few hundred years or something like that. They're not effective against STDs because they are porus just like any human membrane, so STD causing viruses can pass through with ease. However, viruses are a lot smaller than sperm, and the sperm can not penetrate the condom.

So if you know you and your partner are clean and all you're worrying about is pregnancy, Lambskin is a good alternative. I usually just buy latex, most of them don't bother me sensitivity wise. I've talked to other people that have used lambskin and havn't had a problem, girls included.
