As my wife gets older. Her PMS is getting worse and worse. The cramps are getting worse. Her breasts from time to time hurt. But the worse thing for her is how she feels. When she gets PMS, she gets very, very depressed. To the point that she cries for nothing at all. Or just stays in bed all day long just crying or sleeping. At times she comes home very early from work. And at times she just doesnt' go to work at all!

Is there anything "naturally" that she can do or take to minimize her nasty PMS? She's already been to doctors. And all they want to do is prescribe her Zoloft (anti-depressant SSRI).

This is something that she does not want! She already takes Wellbutrin (dopamine reuptake inhibitor). And so she doesn't want to take now TWO anti-depressants.

Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated.

Do hope to hear from you ladies.

Is she seeing docs for anti-depressants or for better birth control / hormone therapy? Has she found a good balance of estrogen / progesterone? Are her levels of both E & P normal? What about T levels?

That much 5-HTP taken every single day will kill her libido, her appetite. And if thats not enough. She will get nightmares when she sleeps. If its to be taken (not sure if it will work like this) only during her PMS, that will be fine. But every single day? She won't do it.

BTW...good to see you QT!

She just went to a endocronologist and told him what she has been experiencing. All the guy did was prescribe her Yaz for the physical symptoms of PMS. And Zoloft to help with her depression. Of course both my wife and I do not agree on taking any of these meds.

What do you suggest she do?

See a holistic doc that specializes in hormones. My sister had similar issues and ended up needing a little progesterone I believe. Her pms is way better and her E is in control now. Screw the Endo, most suck. Try getting in touch with Womens International and see if they have a doc referal in your area.

This is where I was going w/ my questions - at a minimum, see the OB/GYN - but if your doc is sort of a typical doc and not versed in the more practical aspects of hormone balance, then go the route Nsash suggests.

Good luck!

Yeah, she has an appointment with the OB/GYN in a week. She will talk to him and see what he says or does for her. If things don't go well with him. Then yes, I will go the Nsash route. :)

In addition to all of the above, some things to consider:

1. Eliminate all refined foods from the diet. It's hard, but at least dump the white sugar and flour, empty calories anyway.
2. A GOOD multivitamin, plus a good B100 complex.
3. Consistent exercise, doesn't have to be hard, just consistent. Even a daily brisk walk will do the trick.
4. If she's on hormonal BC how much of a chance is there of getting OFF it? That's where most of her problems are stemming from. I was suicidal on BC pills.
5. Have her read Dr. John Lee's book "what your doctor may not tell you about premenopause." Frankly, even if her hormones test out as being balanced (and honestly, with those symptoms, something ain't right, even if it's within "normal" ranges it's not right for HER). and she tries all the above, I'd give natural progesterone a shot for a month or two. She's probably having more "eggless" cycles ... less natural progesterone (which is also the antagonist for estrogen), that's the shit that really stabilizes your mood. If she's on hormonal BC then she's probably estrogen dominant to begin with.
