I don't understand people and their addiction to drugs. They have to be stupid.

They aren't stupid. They have an addiction, which addiction is mostly based on underlying unaddressed mental health issues. They pretty much are self medicating with substances.
It's a cunning "disease" and I can assure you, most addicts wished they were not addicts.
