I finally saw a big bench today

Since I work out at the candyass(myself included) mecca of gyms, Ballys, I rarely see anyone bench anything notable. There's this one enormous dude who is never without his weight belt that says "Big Lou" on it. He's not enormous as in diesel, rather a big bulky Paul Bunyan looking guy except he has no legs at all. All he does is bench all the time and hits 315 for like 6 or 7 reps for his grand finale. Big Lou never really impressed me all that much because for someone who displaces as much air as he does when he moves around, I would've thought his bench would be higher. That and it's hard to respect people who don't train legs or even back for that matter.
Anyways we have this one freak trainer. His picture's up at the front desk from a recent bbing competition he won. He's a brother, about 5'6"-5'7" and probably around 200lbs. Dude is completely jacked, and he wears what I imagine is probably the smallest Ballys personal trainer shirt that Ballys offers. I imagine when he ordered his shirts, the conversation went like this:

Rippedness: "Oh you don't have these shirts in my size? That's cool...I can wear a lady's extra small. I'll take ten of them."
Ballys Hiring Manager: "Ok, Rippedness."

So he's always training this short, hairy Italian dude when I'm at the gym. I have to give him credit because he appears to be serious about this one client, and he makes him squat heavy(despite none of the squats going anywhere near parallel) and to clean and press. While he's training this guy, Rippedness always like to work in the opportunity for him to show the hirsute Mafioso proper form on the exercise using twice the weight that was originally on the bar.

This one time I saw him squat 500lbs. It wasn't all that impressive because he didn't hit parallel with it, but the psyching up process prior to the lift was entertaining. He was holding on to the racked bar and getting pissed at himself in the mirror directly in front of him, shaking it and pulling on it like an engraged orangutan trying to escape his cage. Then all of a sudden when he figured he had caught enough people's attention, he popped under the bar and did the lift.

So today he was once again training Fuzzy Vinny, and it was bench day. Naturally the training session came to the point where it was absolutely necessary for Rippedness to show him some bench technique that required 405 to be loaded onto the bar. So I finally saw a 4 plate bench executed. He then went on to do 410 immediately after that. I know I'll never hit that kind of weight on bench, so it was pretty cool to see.

I did 425 about 3 months ago and my shoulder has been hurt ever since. That's at a body weight of 200 lbs. Not bad for a dude that will turn 40 next year. Thanks for letting me brag.

By all means, brag away. That's a huge bench no matter what all the internet-inflated lifters will spout on here.

Have you recovered from the crushed sternum, collapsed lung and crushed ribs yet.

If he is jacked up like you say he is and at that size he should be putting up at least 500! I am not impressed! But then again, I was not there to see his psyching up process prior to the squat lift! Must have been entertaining! That gives me a good Idea for a new video!

"GYM WORKOUTS UNCENSORED" Maybe Fox will choose the pilot or I could go straight to video! Of course I will ad nip slips, booty shots and candid female post workout shower video! I need to get hold of "Smalls" she does good work in "Set Up" Lez scenes!

Yeah the 500lb squat wasn't as impressive as the bench because it was lacking in depth. The form of the bench was solid though...no bouncing or ceiling fucking.

Thats pretty impressive, no doubt. However, ive got one that really blew my fucking mind. Some dude here in Kansas City that goes by the "WarLord" ( I think he was a prowrestler) came into Golds in 1990. I was working out on the bench next to him getting ready to assualt 275x5 when this 6'6 350lb monster loads the bar with 225x20, 315x10, then jumps to 5 plates per side (495lbs) and hit 2x5-6. And he didn't look like he was maxed either, still had a couple left in him. The whole gym was quiet, just watching him. Thats all he did, then he got up and left. Didnt even unload the fucking bar. Then for the finale, I got all pumped up by this and went for 275x6-which I knew I couldnt get but the attitude thing was kicking in. Without a spotter. And I didnt have shaft collars on either side. I ended up dumping it side per side. What a dumbass. Looked real cool to everyone im sure. I think ill go hide now.

Now that is not only an impressive story about a big bench it is a hilarious one as well.

Well done. <golf clap>

Damn...405 at 16.

Have you done a comp before?

That ain't shit... I saw Larry Zybsko - the wrestler.. the pot belly, out of shape wrestler and Arn Anderson - the wrestler with NO phsyique each hitting 405 for 6-9 reps (Larry had the higher reps) on the bench at Main Event Fitness on Buford Highway about 6 years ago. These guys did not LOOK like strong men at all..

Now something funny...... At the old Gold's gym on Buford, I got to be friends with this young black kid about 19 years old named Kenny. The top of Kenny's head looked like Carrot Tops, only Kenny had the sides and back of his head shaved... His hair actually deflected a bullet one night... no joke. Ok... now Kenny was about 180lbs, but so lean it hurt to look at him. You looked at him and your stomach cramped from hunger pains. But he could train. I have never seen anyone train like Kenny. He would squat with his heels on a 25lb plate - both heel on one 25 lb plate.. ankles about 2 inches from each other... very narrow stance, high elevation for those heels. he would take 315 and squat so low it was not funny. We all hear about ass to floor squats... but Kenny really did that shit. He would squat so low and deep that his ass crack would actually touch his heels and the 25lb plate under them. Boy was limber... he could hit 10 reps like this...

anyhow... Hulk Hogan was this kid's greatest idol of all time. Hogan was god for this kid. Hogan came into Golds one time and Kenny was there and literally shit his drawers... he was hyperventalating about seeing Hogan in person. I am not exaggerating at all here. It was chest day for Kenny. Kenny normally hit 275 for about 5 reps. He got 315 once for 2 reps. But Hogan was here... and he was here just to watch Kenny train. Or so Kenny thought. Now hogan came in at the end of kenny's workout... And Kenny was a huge follower of volume training - which probably explained why he never actually grew - a typical chest workout for Kenny was like 10 sets flat, 8 sets incline, 8 sets decline, flat flyes, incline flyes, decline flyes, pec dec for 5-7 sets each. Well despite that ungodly number of all out effort. Well Kenny just had to rush back to that flat bench so hogan could admire him. Hogan had no clue Kenny even existed. So Kenny throws 315 on the bar... gets it twice... raises the weight up to 405. Unheard of for him. I ask him 'kenny you want a spot?' Kenny: "Naw man, hell no go away man, hulk here, he watching me, I gonna get this... move man, get away from here go stand over there."

I stood by and watch pitifully as that weight set on Kenny's chest almost a full 40 seconds before someone noticed his bicycle kicking which resembled 8 spiders in a leg wrestling match... Hogan and another guy ran over and hauled the weight off him. Kenny was crushed. Literally. To add insult to injury... unknowingly Hulk told him "hey brother, you might want to take some of that weight off... you are not quite strong enough yet."

Kenny fled the gym in tears.

Hulk H is huge in person! When I was 16 working as the banquet boy at the Holliday Inn the wwf showed up in town and spent the night. I seen HH out in the hallway. What a towering site. Poor kenney! Anyways, get this: While about 30 or so of the best names in the business were holding a conference, one of the guys with them came and got me and chewed my ass because there was a fucking mouse running around in the room with them! Give me a fucking break! I knew they were all a bunch of big pussies!

it will be 405 at 15 :)

i did 305 in a single ply poly less than a month after i turned 15

Wow...you'll have put 100lbs on your bench in a year?

well i'm also switching from poly to double denim, but yeah, i busted my ass and plan to keep doing so

At Gold's Venice there was a very average looking guy who used to bench 510lbs for 6 reps. He used to act like an idiot, yack crap, then irritate the hell out of some guy heavy benching... till he could get the guy to bet with him on who had the best bench.

There was always a new sucker.

I saw a 21 yr old guy do 500 for 2. Pretty impressive. I myself have done 400 at 220 lbs in january. I am 23.

Prolly the most impressive this i have ever seen was one of our OL on my college football getting ready to squat 750. All the lights turned down low and only one over the squat rack. about 100 people were around him. he's getting all psyched up to get the weight and he asks our center to punch him in the face. The center blasts him right in the side of the face... blood comes rushing out... and he falls backwards... we pick him up, throw him towards the weight.. he squats it and the rest is history.

Oh and i also saw this guy at my gym deadlift 650 and his nose started bleeding profusely while he did it. When he finished pulling it he started screaming like crazy and had his hands up in the air.

HMMM i wonder if these two guys were on gear???

At the college I went to there was a football player who supposed could bench 600 lbs. This was when the WR was "only" around 660. This was a Div-II school too.

A few monhs ago I met a guy who claimed a 660 bench on his first workout in the gym. That had about as much credibility as most 'football benches'.
