I am on probation at the gym

I am quite upset today. I was placed on probation at my gym along with a few other guys for apparently slamming weights to load when we deadlift. We were told that if we are warned again we will be banned from the gym. Now its not like I am releasing the weight from waist level or anything, but when you deadlift heavy weight its gonna make some clanging noises. I was told the gym floor is not equipped to take such abuse, but I don't see any abuse taking place. The only person that cares is the gym manager. I workers do not care a apologize for lack of knowledge of the manager. Whats funny is all the smaller guys who have no clue what they are doing and throw their weights all over the place don't get yelled at. Its just us bigger guys. Wheres the justice? I lift weights at my college gym and do not want to pay for a private gym. To bad Victorian Guy and Nobby don't lift at my gym. They would teach that manager a lesson. Anyways I just needed to vent my anger.

Dude, that's ridiculous. Unless your gym is super sweet or the only one around, find a new one. There will be other issues that come up if this one goes away.

PatBateman is right...it only gets worse.

It gets to the point where you cant do anything right.

i know i have been there. I am not allowed to lift at two gyms now. i dont mind.

i have moved on...i train at home...no one cares if i drop weight from above my head, if i use chalk, bad language, radical training ideas/exercises etc etc

Don't they have the rubber mats there? you know the one's there all black and real thick many are used in powerlifting comps... If that is your problem Then I suggest you need to talk to this guy or put him face down in some river, nobody will really even notice....

Some dude I was talkin with at my gym knows this other dude (large ass dude) who has memberships to a bunch of gyms in my area except mine ... because they won't let him ... because he's too loud when he lifts ...

So, sooooooooo gay.

I suggested that they get mats but she didnt want to listen me and told me to go somewhere else. I am going to try to complain to her boss or the student recreation department, but I don't how much good it will do. Since my school gym I don't know how much is in there budget to by more equiptment even though $28 per semester goes to the rec center, and there are some 30,000 people that go to our school so thats quite a bit of money.

Our gym owner is a jerk. It is like he is trying to single out the big and strong. The gym is stocked with rubber flooring, but he still gets upset if the weight is slammed into the mat. The guy does not understand what heavy training is all about. . . . he has never lifted a heavy weight in his life. He doesn't say anything to the members (how are you doing or hello), as he is in it for the money. Currently, the owner is trying to figure out why there is a small number of females at the gym (20 percent). He believes that men come to the gym to pick up women. WTF?! Everytime he comes to town, he changes the music to club hip hop noise. Thank god the piece of s**t lives in another state. Once I get a larger place with a basement. . . I am building my own gym:rolleyes: .

i can see where management is coming from. olympic platforms can withstand big drops in weight, rubber floor over wood could be there argument. think about it, 2 inches of rubber mat will not absorb 300 plus pounds of weight falling 12 inches or so if the base is wood. that could be their argument, and that is understandable.

If this is the case, the jerkoff should not have had a gym built with crap wood floors ...

Agreed. MOST gyms, especially the large chains, simply are not built for powerlifting-type lifts. And just because you don't see any damage, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

The guy is probably just trying to save his floor and you can't really fault him for that. IMO, if you're going to be doing those kinds of lifts, find a gym that is built for it.

Some ideas

I agree with the guys who said the gym ought to buy rubbermats. I am no longer at university, but when I was I remembered the bullshit 'student fees'- I already paid fuckin fees, and they take another 30 bucks and it goes to the 'Arab student association', 'women's club' , 'gay and lesbian student association' and such bullshit, but they wouldnt spend a dime extra on the gym.

I say ask them to buy mats. And as for that prick manager, here is a dirty way to deal with the bastard, get what you want, and be immune from anything he might want to do about it:

- find someone else who hates this guy. Then there are two of you to 'back up' the bullshit story you invent. Tell the manager to buy the mats and get off your back. Tell him that -as you and your buddy remember it- he made 'homophobic' remarks when telling you not to drop the weight. Something like 'don't drop the weights, queerboys' or something like that. Or anti-semitic, or racial, etc., just something that the school would sack someone for in a second. Hell, say you are Jewish and he said 'hey, kike, don't drop the weight, this aint your fuckin synagogue'
Tell him that should the two of you report him for his comments, he will be fired by the school (I take it this is a politically correct sea of bullshit like the university I attended). Then tell him to stay the fuck out of your face.

Just a thought.

Thats the best idea I have heard yet. Fortunately their are quite a few people who are not please with this managers policies. I asked her to buy mats(the manager is a 90 pound women with no weight training experience) but she didnt want to talk about. Time use more serious messures.

Lucky my gym owner is hardly there

and he is an ex competitive bb'er, so he knows the deal. Plus in in Australia we're not that anal :)

Hell with the amount of clanging the plates make when I do Olympic lifts and hybrids. I would last 1 min at your gym :spit:

Why not buy a couple squares of rubber matting to help absorb the shock of the weights?

Also as heavywear said it's not that hard to put the weight down carefully. As a matter of fact it is better for you and puts more stress on your muscles because you get a more complete negative movement.

You have to learn to adapt to your surroundings, son.

The thing is I do put the weight down carefully, but 400 pounds wills make noise no matter how you put it down. I never drop the weight. If I am going real heavy I may drop the last few inches faster then normal, but in no way do I really slam weights in a way which would cause damage. The point is they dont really want us to deadlift there. I asked if I could buy some mats but the lady didnt even want to discuss it.

Alright if you really are being careful and you offered to buy your own mats she is a bitch who must be stopped.

Yoiu gotta go above her head. Find out who her supervisor is, then if he won't cooperate go to his boss, etc. Take it to the university president if you have to. There is no reason not to be allowed to deadlift.
