Hunting as a sport?

New member
Okay, here's everyone's chance to flame me and call me a pussy, etc.

...what's up with people who consider hunting a sport, and call themselves 'sportsmen'? Where's the sport in wearing camoflauge, dousing yourself in animal piss, hiding up in a tree, and using a high-power scope to shoot at an animal 100 feet away who doesn't even have a clue that you're there? ...or shooting a shotgun into the air into the middle of a flock of birds, and getting all happy when one or two fall to the ground? Pretty unsportsmanlike in my opinion.

Now... maybe if you trained monkeys how to use guns, got them really pissed off, dropped them off on an island, and then had to hunt them down... that would be a little more sport-like.

...oh, and for the record: I'm not a vegetarian or a liberal, and I am pro-gun.

Well, if u like. We could drop you off in the middle of the woods and hunt you! No???

...just like Ice-T in Surviving the Game? You remember how that turned out. And yes, my life is just like the movies, so I would take you all out, one-by-one. :)

How you gonna take me out if I'm in camo, doused in piss, hiding up in a tree, using my high powered scope on my gat from 100 feet away and you not even knowing I'm there...something to think about ehh???

See, now that's fine if you're hunting for the food. I think it's far better for an animal (deer or whatever; no cow hunting, damn!) to spend it's life running around in the woods and then be taken out quickly, rather than just spend it's life in a filthy box, waiting for slaughter.

But... to just shoot an animal and then leave it there, or take it home and stick its head on your wall... what's the point? That's like taking pictures of someone you jumped from behind and being all proud of it.

Well, if Ice-T can do it, so can I.

But again, you're illustrating my point. Sure, you could take me out pretty easily, but where's the sport in it. There would be more sport if you came down and took me out with a knife, because at least then it'd be two-sided.

I agree with this. I think you should only kill what you are going to eat. I don't agree with the no cow hunting I would love to hunt hunt cows if they let me because have you seen the cost of rib eyes lately and I hate cows? :D

Go for it! If the Chupacabra can hunt cows, you should be able to also.

I bow hunt for sport, and have been for 10 years now. Unless you know everything hunting, you have no right to make an opinion. Just like with anything else, if you are uneducated in a subject you cannot fully see the full picture.

I bowhunt as a sport, and yes sitting up in a tree in camo and different scents is a SPORT. You say it is easy, you are TOTALLY WRONG. There is so much more that goes into it. You need to study the land, study the deer in the area, their daily routines, times of the day when they are moving and feeding. Same as any other sport, you need a game plan, need to do your studying and practicing. You can hunt your entire life without killing a deer, I know people that have done this.

I hunt for the trophy, to hang on my wall. But the rest of the animal does not just get left to rot in the woods. I donate it.

Project Venison was established in 1991 to give hunters an outlet to help give something back to the community. Through the generous donations of deer by hunters over the years, we have helped feed thousands of needy people throughout the country.

any questions?

Obviously those of you that think you just climb any tree and within an hour or so a deer comes a walking up and BAM you got a deer have never been hunting likely...

You can go to a great spot or even many spots, day after day and never even SEE a deer.
Then, if and when you see him/her, you may have a total of 2-3 seconds to raise, aim and hit it before it bolts 40 mph away in a split second when it see/hears/smells your Ass..

And this is the scenario with a great Deer stand located in a heavily traveled and populated habitat area .

With hunting pressure and lack of habitat, chances go down from here that you are gonna get a deer.

I know friends that have hunted for years, and they still come home empty handed more often than not..

I don't hunt any longer because of the lack of results and the FL heat in the fall..

I beat you to it. great post anyway. lets see who can put it down now.

And if hunting with Bow or BlackPowder, the chances are even more that you are gonna not only not see a deer but when you do see it you will miss hitting it... The kill distances are very close vs Modern Gun...

I respect hunters that bring home meat year after year..

Now hunting HOGS here in FL is fun. Especially when a big male chases you up a tree..

One more time for the EF exceptionally un educated....

Y_Lifter and Themachine01,

Okay, you have schooled me. I will admit that. I did not take into account all those other factors that you brought up.

I still believe that it isn't sportslike in the sense that the two parties aren't even close to being evenly matched, but I do appreciate and acknowledge all the technical aspects of your hunting.

As far as me not being able to have an opinion though, just because I don't know everything about hunting... then there better not be any more posts on EF about Bush and Iraq, unless they're by foreign-policy experts. :)

fogg,

There is a difference between sportsman and poachers.

Sportsman=care about nature and its habitat
Poachers=destroy the reputation the Sportsman try to build

I guess it all boils down to just being an issue of semantics. My view and definition of 'sport' is different than others'. But again, I learned something new today, so it's all cool.

Evenly Matched ?

OK, Man/Woman plus side
Has the Firearm
Superior Brain ( Arguable in the woods at least )

Deer plus side
Superior vision like 10 fold
Superior sense of smell like 50 times
Superior hearing like 20 times
Superior physical abilities SPEED, AGILITY STEALTH etc.
Superior knowledge of environment It lives there 24/7
Superior survival instincts

I could probably come up with others....

No offense bro, but just like watching Roland Martin Fishing,
it is not realistic to believe what you may have seen on TV regarding Hunting

Obviously you don't know many hunters.
Hunting, whether simply for the meat or simply for fun is the same thing.
No one shoots their game and doesn't either bring it home to eat or sells it to be eaten.

Had you actually been a gun enthusiast rather than a gun owner (who likely goes to the range twice a year), you'd know the difference.

And the reason people are going BOW lately vs Modern Gun is because its more challenging (or Sporting). And they get first crack at the deer, as Bow season opens first before the deer get spooked by all the GUN dudes smashing around in the woods..

Some states have year round deer season for bow hunters.

In most locals the only natural predator to deer is man, and using hunters/sportsmen culls the herd and keeps them healthy.

I only hunt with a re-curve bow and flint lock rifle now, I see no use in using a 30.06 with a 12X scope, but, I do not hold it against those who do....Most will hunt the mountains around me a lifetime and are lucky to kill one deer....Hunting is not as easy as it sounds and dealing with changing weather patterns, food supplies, natural cover all dictates where and when I hunt....

I kill 4 bucks per year, 2 go to myself and family members, the other 2 go to a local church and are divided up among those who are in need...

After every hunting season is closed, I sow winter wheat and place corn and other fodder around to ensure the weak survive yet another year...By doing this, I have written permission to hunt some of the best private land around me, and more often than not, I am the only one allowed....

To me, it's not about the kill, that would make me a murderer, I enjoy the solitude of the woods, the smell, the life and sounds that are around me at all times....add some apples, trail mix and a good book...I am in pure heaven....

I hold no reguard, nor will I ever, for those who bait, abuse, kill deer for the loin only and leave the rest....Sorry fuckers in my book....

Some like to hunt, some don't, some like to fish, some don't...In the end....It's all good to me....

Good Post R.....

Here in FL, we have very restricted permit hunts for Gators.
I have a good friend that gets sometimes as many as 3 permits and usually goes out on maybe 2 nights each year and is allowed to get 2 Gators per permit.

One would think that going out in a Swamp or Lake at Midnight
in a small boat to hunt a deadly animal possibly weighing 3 times your weight would be crazy...

Actually he says it is relatively simple and easy and not very sporting.

Using a Flood Light find the biggest one by looking for the red reflection of their eyes.
Throw out a heavy line and Hook them with a small grappler hook
Slowlly Drag them up to the side of the boat with little struggle usually. If they thrash its only when they see the boat.
Hit them on the top of the head with a BANG Stick(shot gun or 30.06 shell on a pole) blowing a hole in its brain..

The tough part is dragging the 300 or more pound gator onto the boat..

Hahahahahahahahahahaha.....Naw, it's quicker hunting with a re-curve....just draw and let it go...no sights. cams, kisser buttons...much simpler

So in order for someone to be a gun enthusiast, they must also be well-versed in the ins and outs of hunting? That doesn't hold up. Not that it matters, and anything anyone says on the internet is pretty much grain-of-salt material, but I was raised around guns, have always owned them, and do plenty of shooting. (quite a bit more than 2x a year.)

This whole post shows how effective the liberal, anti-gun, PETA-type crowd has been in brainwashing the population into believing that hunters walk into the woods and leave the area decimated of all wildlife. Their constant referrel of deer as "Bambi" further cements the idea in children and women.

PETA, the Sierra Club, and all of the eco-socialist groups, combined, have done zilch for the benefit of wildlife when compared to the very group (hunters) that they despise.

What if I go out and kill a trophy buck mainly because I want its head on my wall, but I make full use of the meat. Is that wrong?

PETA made the mistake of following some good ole boyz from round here in the mountains banging pots and pans two seasons ago....ain't been back since....heh heh heh heh

What happened?

They got an ass-whupping and the hunters took their shoes and made them walk back out barefooted....it was funny watching them on TV saying how this won't deter them from achieving their goals....Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I saw this in a movie once, can't remember the name, but this woman gets out of a cab in New York wearing a full Mink Coat....This PETA chick runs up and gets in her face and asks, " Do you know how many animals died to make that coat? "

The woman grinned and shot back, " Do you know how many animals I had to fuck to get this coat? "

I thought that was a classic line, but of course I am stoned so anything is pretty cool right now...heh heh heh

I think the confusion comes from the fact that most people accept the term "sport" as a physical activity requiring training. Thus the people that participate in the sport are deemed as atheletes. The 2 terms are one and the same in most peoples minds.

So when a fat hunter calls his hobby a sport, some people will balk at the notion. In reality a sport is anything you train for and compete against an opponent, so hunting fits the bill, so does car racing and bodybuilding.

i just got out of the woods...there's nothing easy about it. at all. of course you have to hide in a tree wearing camo, they run if you dont. lol...

seriously though, theres not too much better than the rush you get whan a deer just sneaks up on you and you take it

No but if you spent time at the range and went to some gun shows you'd know quite a few hunters and would be informed enough to make your own decision before jumping online and getting yourself in a flame war. :)

I've been out on a couple of hunts before, and they were great fun. I didn't even have a rifle with me, just a camera, but I got a few great pictures of a HUGE whitetail before it took off running. Damn that was one big fucking deer. lol

Anyway, I've been present when deer and moose have been shot, and I think I'm far to squeamish to actually pull the triger myself. Besides, the amount of skill it takes is unreal.

So I don't hunt, but I have no problem with people who do. There's really no difference between buying a steak at Safeway and shooting a deer in the wild.

I would like to go bear hunting someday though. That shit would be intense. :)

It was my fourth year of tracking the largest elk I had ever seen. I picked up his tracks at 5:40 AM, they are unmistakable because of their immense size and semi round chunk missing from a rear foot. I followed all day as he meandered through meadows, thickets, and dark woods. Night was slowly approaching and his altitude kept climbing. Determined due to the proximity, I found steam rolling off of some fresh droppings, I doggedly pursued him above timberline. My breath was getting hard to catch and the snowflakes began to fall as the cruel North wind started shaking the limbs of the trees.

His path kept wandering to ever increasing altitudes, snowfields were becoming a menacing problem as the terrain grew steeper and steeper. The snowfall had become a full blown Rocky Mountain blizzard and his tracks became increasingly elusive. Luckily the continental divide appeared and it seemed he would have difficulty in crossing the terribly steep and rocky excarpment at the top so I continued my pursuit despite the rapidly dwindling light.

Just when I was giving up hope, I seen an antler tine poking out of a bush. I took off my boots and crept barefoot on the snow and ice until I had an available shot at 200 yards. My breathing was very labored so I rested a moment as I steadied my Winchester .300 magnum on a rock. The crosshairs settled on his massive chest and my heart trembled with excitement. He was easily 15% larger than any elk I had ever seen before. I squeezed the trigger and the Nosler 180 grain ballistic tip roared off at 3300 feet per second. The huge animal lept to his feet and bounded off at incredible speeds. I quickly reloaded and fired again at the rapidly receding target. Another miss. Damn.

I have been hunting bull elk in the national forests for 15 years now and still have not harvested an animal. I spend months getting in shape, planning, and scouting the hunt. Thouands of dollars are spent on gear (tents, clothing etc.) and I am a steadfast member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The only purpose of this very large organization is to raise millions of dollars from concerned hunters in order to provide and ensure quality habitat for our wild elk. We are about the only organization with the power to compete with greedy developers who want a condo on every corner and a mansion on every hilltop. Last year we purchased another 18,000 acres of land that is now committed to providing quality habitat for our favourite animal. The Rocky Mountain elk.

killing bear is wrong, to kill a bear just for to make a nice rug or mount and a few sandwiches, them poor little animals. How can you kill something that is the most popular stuffed animal and child's toy. YOU SCUM!! :p
