Humbling....

Since last spring my training has been completely screwed up as I wasn't supposed to have any weight in my left hand. The surgery that was supposed to have helped me last May didn't go well and I just had another surgery a few weeks ago (and cortisone shots in between surgeries). All is FINALLY well. I am SO happy.

I just got to go-ahead from my dr and the woman who's doing physical therapy with me to start off with light upper body lifting again. While I can say I'm thrilled to be back at it (tonight was the first night I tried and did a shoulder workout), I have to say that it's really humbling to be lifting 2.5 and 5 pound weights. I know I have a good reason for it and I'm certainly going to baby my left wrist and take it slow, but it's sort of a mind-fuck to know I'm pretty much having to start over again.

Just felt like saying that it feels good to have muscle fatigue again and I'm really excited to be able to get completely back into the lifestyle that makes me feel awesome on every level.

What does your physiotherapy regimen look like for your wrist?

First 4 weeks was hell after my ankle surgery. I had to use rubber bands to build ankle weight tolerance. :)

I'm bracing when I'm lifting just to make sure I don't tip my hand back too far and hurt anything. I get to do a lot of stretching to get my mobility back. After all these months of doing very little moving of that wrist, it feels kinda of icky to bend it-- plus the scar is still really hard/lumpy. I'm massaging it and keeping a scar pad on it though and it seems to loosen up a little more every day. I'm also getting more and more nerve feeling back into my palm every day and that's nice too. I was having issues moving my thumb.

Surgery isn't fun, nor is the recovery, but I am utterly thrilled with how much less pain I'm in. It sounds like I'll do some resistance work once I have the ability to tip my hand forward and back more. As long as I'm extra careful about keeping my wrists straight when I'm lifting, and as long as I'm not pushing myself too hard, I should continue to improve. ;)

Thats good to hear on the nerve issue. That is the one thing that scared the hell out of me.......not being able to feel my feet after my ankle surgery.

Sounds like your doc did a good job. :)

Glad to hear you are back at it again! i know how you feel about starting over! i went thru the same thing with my knee a couple of years ago. it certainly is humbling, especially knowing where you were, and where you are now! you'll be back in no time!

At least you're getting back to it. Many people who have been away from the gym for so long don't make it back.

Don't worry about being humbled. You gotta start over somewhere. And I've got two words for ya: Muscle Memory.:D

Take it easy and move at your own pace. You'll be good as new before you know it! :D
