How many carbs to eat when cutting?

Garza

New member
I know it varies from person to person but I am 5 foot 11 and 186 lbs, 17 yrs old. I was thinking of doing 200 grams of protein, 45 fat, and 150 carbs. Is that not enough carbs?

I can tell u one thing, that sure as heck ain't low carb!

Focus having your carbs for your first meal (oats), then having a postworkout shake in the early evening made with maltodextrin. To cut, these work good for being my only source of carbs. As the weeks progress, I ditch the oats...............it works.........

I was gunna ask the same thing.... at the moment I'm having a bowl of oatmeal in the morning (small one) and sometimes I have a slice of wholemeal bread during the day....

As well as some honey postworkout. That's the only carbs I get (aside from skim milk)....

.... is it enough, or too much? Keep in mind that my fat content is very low....

That's cool, but ditch the honey......it does nothing for glycogen recomp after a workout, and this is PROVEN. Trust me, I used to use honey, while some choose fruit............a big no no.........fructose will go to the liver, NOT the muscle(s)....

supplementdirect.com has 11lbs of maltodextrin (glucose) for 10 bucks!!! Can't beat it! Keep the oats in the a.m., I say ditch the bread as it doesn't really need to be there from what I can tell, and have the maltodextrin postworkout.........or keep the bread and if u aren't losing, then take that out.........then the oats...........then finally the maltodextrin......(only the week before the contest)........U always want to fill the glycogen back up to aid recovery....

And the milk has to go bro.....sooner or later...........Arnold didn't say "milk is for babies" for nothing!

It's all based on your individual weight actually (and for some, their response to carbs in general), but under 100 is the "dictionary term" if u will, for low carbs.

not quite....

for sedentary individuals, those numbers would apply......

for bodybuilders, under 100 is low carb..........just ask anyone used to eating pasta, rice, breads, etc. how they feel when they take in under 100 and attempt to train balls out.............I bet they call it "low carb" then!

For me, "low carb" is between 150 and 200 grams. I can't function at all on less and my job requires me to be constantly thinking. Also, I never did very well on Keto diets vs a reduced carb diet to justify the agony. My normal maintenance diet is roughly ~400g p ~400g c and ~50g of fat per day. I think everyone needs to experiment and discover what works for their individual metabolism.

JavaGuru :

What the hell are your stats that you need that much protein and carbs? You must be on a serious bulking diet?.?.?.

Thanks for the advice, but I can't take maltodextrin supplements.... it's just not an option.

I need my post-workout carbs to be from real food. So what real foods has dextrose/maltodextrin?

No one has been able to answer this question, and I've been asking it for months.

well..........

if it's not an option, I don't know what to tell u...........it's as easy as buying beef or chicken, so I don't understand your reasoning. Why avoid something that is so beneficial? If you ain't takin' it seriously, then.............well................forget it..................

Real "food" u can buy with this in it is limited. Sweet tarts have maltodextrin and glucose as the first ingredients. Why these may be an option and why the maltodextrin isn't just stumps me...............it's your body..........

BeastBoy: I just finished a two week diet "sprint" and I'm 5'10", 240 lbs. and ~12% BF. The diet I listed is my maintenance diet on a workout day, non workout days I subtract 100g carbs 45g protein and a couple grams of fat due to my during/post workout shake. I add about 100g of carbs, and a small amount of fat and protein I get from the clean carbs when I actually "bulk." You also have to realize that I run for 20 minutes after my workouts 4x per week and that burns between 400-500 calories depending on my intensity. I cut the cardio intensity back when I bulk and burn about 300 KCal. I've been doing this long enough to understand my metabolism and that's why I usually advise people to experiment once they have the basics of their diet covered.

You have to understand the environment I live in.... it's hard to explain, but I don't buy the food. All I can do is be discreetly suggest things to add to the shopping list, but I can't really go asking the buyer to spend their own money on something that only I will be eating.... it's not fair. The person who buys, buys things that the whole household can eat. It's hard to explain. It would just be rude.

Also, I can't buy things online.... do supermarkets or whatever sell maltodextrin or dextrose? Maybe pharmacies?

I find it difficult to believe that there's NO natural foods that will replenish your glycogen stores. What did people do before the supplement companies came along?

It is funny......

but through trial and error, that is how we have progressed in regards to nutrition and knowing what is best. U can obtain dextrose/maltodextrin at like GNC, but I hate that fuccin' place...WAY overpriced.........Just load up on a stick of those sweet tarts.....u know, they are like $.50, and yes eat the whole stick. Then, have your protein, whatever source, one hour later. This does work.........

Good luck bro! U can do it!

I don't feel I need to justify myself to people on this board. My household is that way, and there's nothing I can do about it.

So.... these roll things you're talking about, are they okay while cutting? Because I'm cutting right now....

YES.......

They are fine while cutting, just as long as this is like your only carb intake......postworkout when u know that they can be used properly by the body and not converted to fat..........u can have oats in the morning, but then cut those back if u find u need to cut more...........I can get ripped this way. Don't neglect cardio!

Okay, thanks.

So what's the name of the product? Sweet Tarts? What's the brand name, and which section of the grocery store would I find them?

Sweet Tarts is the name. They are candy...so look in either bulk food or by the checkout. You can probably get them cheaper in bullk.
