How long on a diet ...

I don't quite understand the question.

I know you are preparing for a show, but what is it that you exactly want to know. I have found that there really is no EXACT way to guage these things. Your mirror, IMHO, is your best friend (that, and a TOTALLY HONEST and KNOWLEDGEABLE friend/trainer who will look at your strong and weak points so that proper adjustments can me be made along the way.).

You are dropping #'s too quickly? Or do you seem to be leaning too quickly? Are u saying that this is a negative thing? Or are you just pleasantly surprized?

Your first few weeks you will drop a lot of water...weight really means nothing..it is your body fat that is important to measure..You can lose lean mass right along w/ fat if you are not careful. Once you get leaner it becomes more difficult to lose bodyfat...your body goes against that and does everything it can to keep that bodyfat. That is why it is good to do a carb rotation and change your diet as you go..make changes as needed.

Yup, losing lean mass is what I'm worried about. My question is, basically, how long does it generally take for the diet to "settle" into a relatively steady loss? I know the water weight comes off quickly at first, but how long is that - 2 weeks? If so, fine, I'm still losing water. If shorter, then it's not water only. So ... a few weeks, new@. OK.

I will say, though - I'm starting to look great! I should have done this LONG AGO! I have little block-shaped shadows across my belly.

...and I don't think 12 days qualifies as enough time to figure an average, no. :)

LOL! You're so PRACtical spatts. Always the calm voice of reason (except for when you're blowing up like a cow :D moo )

Hm - well, I guess I was just looking ahead, as one does. My pants are starting to fall off me (I like them a little baggy to start with, but these particular ones have been tight at points this year). Shoulders and arms are starting to come through - legs looking a little less lumpy.

This diet thing seems so easy! Whoo, maybe I should take that back, before the voodoo dolls of fat pocket land come down to make me eat my words!

So, how long do I wait? A month?

I think the thing w/ diet is to keep it changing -- sometimes it takes a few weeks for a new change to kick in. There are the short term changes, like dumping water weight, and then the steady changes come in - but make sure you aren't losign more than 1-2 lbs per week. If you want to do a show, as you get closer, you should take a look at the calories & P/C/F distribution - how much in vs. how much burned. You should see your body start responding at a good pace, but then it may start slowing down or maybe start going too fast and you see some muscle loss. You can track this w/ body fat & mirror. I used carb rotation to help drop my body weight down 18 lbs and 8% bf over 16 weeks - but actually the last week I lost 6 lbs just in water depletion.

Its not so much that you can expect a constant rate of loss once you have a diet rolling - it needs to be monitored and tweak constantly because your body will adjust itself and become "content" w/ a paritcular diet - just as w/ everythign else, monitor, tweak it here and there, change it up every couple of weeks to keep it responding instead of getting comfortable.
