How important is rest?

I started bullshitting with this dude that goes to my gym. He was locked up for a little bit and did some training while in jail. He said the guys in there were all monsters and pretty much trained the same routine everyday. Same body parts same exercises and they were all jacked the fuck up. Has anyone here ever trained like that? I know the science behind letting the muscles recover after training them but then how these guys get big? He also talked with them and they train the same way on the outside too.

Letting your muscles recover is very important. With the help of AAS that recovery time can be decreased so the muscles are ready for more work sooner then you may think.

It was said in another thread that some olympic lifters train 3 times a day.

Not just msucles, but your nervous system as well - more important too, it's like battery. It will run out of charge if you keep draining and you will eventually feel drained too :)

weak electrical current = not much muscle force

off course your joints, connective tissue and tendons need even more recovery time

i think its the most overlooked part of training. Less is more in alot of instances. If your CNS is shot you are done, you need to rest. Most jails/states dont allow weight training anymore so these guys where probably doing a shit load of bodyweight exercises and fuck, anyone can do that every day. Start adding heavy loads and alot of volume you will overtrain quickly.

I'm guessing that the prisoners have a limited time to lift, so they train for an hour, and then sit around for 23. Plenty of rest.

I believe rest is as important as a good diet.

If a person was continously pushing themselves hard, the waste your muscles produced by burning energy would not have the time to leave the area. A prime example of this is lactic acid build up.

Also the other form of rest - sleep is the prime muscle rebuilding/ repair time. During this phase your body can soley concetrate on feeding those muscles with essential amino acids and protiens to aid in repair without having to divert it else where.
During sleep is also the highest point where your body produces growth hormone. Obviously a key hormone in the growth and repair of tissues.

+1

For the rest of us with lives to lead, rest is important.

But what im saying is how are these guys so big when there doing the same training everyday of there life? Same exercises everyday same routine everyday and they still grow. Oh and Happy Easter everybody.

Yeah but what about diet? I was just watching a prison show on MSNBC and a lot of those guys were ripped. I know they aren't eating 5-6 small meals of grilled chicken and whole grain brown rice!!

I have meet a few guys out of prison
they all told me the same thing they pretty much just bench press ,curls and thats about all. focusing on strength rather then anything else.
Some are huge when they get out some are not.
Some are huge and look good and all but when they take off their shirts they are all chest and shoulders.
Plus they do not get to train everyday with weights some days when the pit is full they get bumped out. Only the gorillas get to hog the weights and chances are they would always be gorillas no mater how they trained due to gorilla like genetics

just hit the bench everyday and you will get a shredded chest/arms, it might not be the optimum, but i say if summer is coming and time is limited, hit it almost everyday for faster results.

like the above poster said from his prison friends, bench & curls will give decent results, if that is all your interested in. If you don't enjoy lifting weights, this routine can work for some.
