It seems they think modern America is like the old west.

We can't get guns - simple as that. So when we see people with guns we are always amazed.

we think seeing a random person with a gun is straight up crazy.

really? i never knew getting a driver's license meant 6 months of paperwork, letters of approval from a local sheriff's office and a federal agency, a $200 tax, and being subjected to random, un-announced searches of your property.

is it like this in all states?

this kid damn sure didnt go through all that. like i said, it wouldn't happen in the uk..

i read a summary of an interesting book about guns in the west...you've proly heard of this study...according to this author the western gun legacy is largely false...their was not a gun in every home and shootouts and duels

i love reading Europeans criticisms of violent America....considering in the last few centuries, more atrocities were commitied in Europe than probably anywhere in the fucking world, including the extermination of 8 million people less than a century ago....and if you count the Soviet Union, then add another 20 million to that number...

Driver's permit, passing the state test, paying insurance to drive or your license is revoked, you can be pulled over for no reason and searched, and if you refuse to take a test, you get youe license revoked.

You have a great point. Again.

that's only if you want to buy a machine gun (a weapon that fires numerous rounds with one pull of a trigger). if you want to buy a semi-automatic firearm (one round fired per trigger pull), the hassle is far less.

I'm not criticising America. It just seems nonsensical to me for people to have guns.

I mean, why?

"In America, "buying a machine gun is often easier than getting a driver's license."
Annnnd, that is correct. I have lived in a few states, and gone though all sorts of hoops.
I could go get me a mini30 and 1000 rounds in 15 minutes.
It's taken me a MINIMUM of 2 hrs to get a license. And in New Mexico, I had to go though a drunk driving education class to get a license.

supposedly their is an American tradition with firearms...from the early pionneers who used them for hunting and indian killing...to the revolutionaries who overthrew the brits.
Colt, winchester, remmington...are signature Americana brands with legacies and nostalgia attached, if that makes any sense...

Americans are mostly Euro descendants.

btw isn't a remmington a lady leg shaver?

are you seriously saying buying/owning a machine gun is as easy as getting a driver's license? yeah, ok...

do you have to have a criminal background check on both the state and federal level to get a driver's license? no.

do you have to get fingerprinted in order to get a driver's license? no.

do some states have an outright ban on driver's licenses? no.

does someone have to be an adult to get a driver's license? no.

will being convicted of ANY felony keep you from getting a driver's license? no.

will you be facing 20 years in prison for owning a car without a driver's license?

the list goes on and on and on.

if owning a machine gun was as easy as you assume it to be (and you are dead wrong, btw), there would be many, many more people owning fully automatic weapons. :Chef:

it is impossible to legally purchase a machine gun in even several days, let alone 15 minutes.

As I'm sure you know, semi auto assault rifles (such as the SKS) are easily modified to be full auto.

Yep, I think there are only a couple verified cases of "show downs" like you see portrayed in movies. Most shootings happened like they do today. :) Also, much like today, firearm owners used them as tools more than anything, hunting and killing livestock predators.

true, at least at first...now in days not so much.
what does descendancy have to do with this?
we have different environments and histories...

America has an anglo culture kinda. Same laws, language etc.

Altho I do appreciate some differences I dont think culture is a good enough excuse to keep guns.

you can modify any semi-automatic firearm, even a handgun, to shoot fully automatic. however, doing so is not only VERY illegal, but it is also VERY dangerous to do so.

if one round goes off before it is chambered correctly, your firearm will blow up in your face and possibly kill or maim you.

secondly, it is not as easy as most people think it is to convert a semi-auto into a fully automatic firearm. to do it in a way that won't kill you or junk your weapon, you would need to know how mechanics of the firearm works and the proper tools to do.

Still easier to get than a license.

hunting is a very popular pastime
the majority of gun sales are for hunting (assumption)...it doesn't seem like western euro does much of this, so it's harder to understand how ingrained guns are on peeps

There are still people in the US that rely on taking game to feed their family. Venison is an excellent lean protein source, we used to get it processed 50/50 with hamburger for patties.

Some parts of western Euro. Spain is more about the gun and hunting. My G-ma is from there and my dad told me plenty of hunting stories.
BUT- the mythology of the west and the gun are definately tied together.

bros,

you don't want to know HALF of what people say about America over here...
but you gotta understand, lots of ignorant peeps overhere say the same things about french, germans, russians...so the hostility is mutual...

well, i guess that's how it's gotta be then...i know we won't be the number one superpower for all of eternity...but untill we get knocked down, people are always gonna be hateful and spiteful.
been true with every major nation
ussr
UK
France
Germany
when they were aggressive and more powerful, they were scorned
now that they are not, they are scornful
human nature

the soviet union banned firearms, and not only were the people brutally oppressed, imprisoned, and murdered by their government, but they still had twice the murder rate the US did.

hitler banned guns once he got in power, and look at how great that turned out to be.

mao did the same thing in china, and look at how great that went for the millions of people who were murdered there.

castro did the same thing in cuba.

Yo I agree. I wish you would be the No.1 superpower. Frankly, I'd be scared of the Chinese, Indians, Germans or Russians getting into that position.

I thought you just needed $ to buy a machine gun? (and a few people on the black market) ;)
