How do you setup a home gym?

Finally got my own home, so the next step for me is to set up a good gym at home, so I can workout as much as I want without depending on the schedules of the gym and work. How much do you think it would cost me to set up a complete gym for individual use where I would not be missing much? With what things should I begin with? Thinking of setting it up graually, buying stuff every month.

Well you need the basics. I would get a power rack. From there you have all the area you need for your main lifts such as squats, bench and so on. There's safety bars on the the inside and clips on the outside. These Range in price from ~$300-way higher lol. Then a bench that can be adjusted to do incline and flat movements.
Most Olympic bar sets come with 300lbs of weights. That's a great starting point. Check craigslist out. I now have 4 sets that I got cheap.
And lastly some dumbbells. It's best to get a whole set but if you get them separate, pick some landmark numbers and get them. 10/20/35/50/60/70 and whatever. Dumbbells are the expensive part.
Beyond that, everything else is extra.

Forgot to add prices but it won't let me edit. Bar sets are $300 at places like Dick's. I got two sets for $75 and the other two for less than $120.
Dumbbells generally run $1 a pound it I remember right but I haven't looked in a while.

@Saiyan7 gave you a really complete and in-depth answer.

A tip I have for you is to check kijiji, craigs list, classified ads etc. Sometimes you can find gym equipment for dirt cheap from a gym nearby that is closing down.

Remember that you don't have to buy everything at once. You could start off with just purchasing a squat rack, a bench, a barbell, and dumbbells. As more money comes in, then you could purchase things like a cable machine, lying hamstring curl etc.

if you buy equipment from the sports store you will pay a fortune. i'm talking thousands. DO NOT DO THAT!!

go on the listing craigs, backpage, etc etc. you will find some sick deals on this stuff cause people just want to get rid of it. negotiate, you will be surprised.

for me mats are going to be important cause you need to protect your floor. some quality bars, weights (including rubber for deadlifts and cleans).

Instead of rubber weights, which is a good option but expensive as hell, build a platform. 1 sheet of 3/4 in plywood is roughly 8ft x 4ft. Get some 2x4s and run the along the perimeter of the bottom and a couple through the middle for support. Cheap and very effective for protecting the floor and weights.

A safety rack would definitely be a very good starting point - with it you can do so many things, both with your own weight, and additional weights on barbells, that the only limit is your fantasy. So a safety rack/cage + bench + barbell with a set of plates would be a hella good beginning.

Great advice here. I completely agree. Power rack is number 1 for sure. I would always buy used weights to save money. Used weights weigh the same as new weights!
