How Do You Handle Bums Begging?

Man, I was washing my new truck last night and this 25 cent carwash. Then bum #1 comes up to me and ask for a dollar for a beer and in exchange he would help me dry my truck(I just started washing with the soap btw) . Then bum #2 comes up with three dimes and two nickels in his hand. I go wow this is a change he wants to give me some money. No such luck. He ask if I will give him two quaters so he can (check this out) GET A CONDOM. WTF? I wanted to ask him who would do it with you anyway but I didn't. Anyway that's it I am not going to that carswash anymore.

Well what about ya'll how do you handle bums?
 
The condom was most likely for Bum #1. The local "transient" population is notorious for living next to ATMs next to campus and harrassing college students. I simply say "No" when they ask for money. I believe the job market sky rocketed here to about 5.5% unemployment, so I have a hard time helping the (mainly) drug addicts that pester me. Funny how all these 20yr old runaways also happen to be wartime vets.
 
With respect. I don't know what situation's have happened in their lives that placed them where they are today... but it's most likely not been easy.

Whether that's because of an addiction or not, is irrelevant. They're still human.

Give him a fucking quarter and let him get laid. :)

In my experience bums tend to go for males more often than females....I've thus not had to deal with many bums. I'd also have problems giving to most bums (if I felt so inspired in the first place) enless they were able to do a credit card transaction. If I have cash, I spend it within minutes it seems. At least with with a card I get the rush of guilt as I write out my signature.

My main thought at the moment is whether the bum was a) lying about needing a condom and 2) if he was gonna get some was it with a bumette or some classy girl with a bum-fetish. Hmmmm...

I usually do a spin move, or if the bum is persistant I'll give him a stiff arm.


If I'm drunk, I'll ask em to perfom some kind of task, like sing, or run down the block or something. I'm all about helping people.
 
It depends on the situation.

For alcohol? NO!!

Will I buy them a sandwich or food? Yes sometimes.

We even bought these 2 old men dinner at IHOP late one night.
The people in there wanted to kill us, but we done the right thing.
It was ice cold and raining out, and they were hungry.


Use equal parts compassion and common sense and you will have the answer for how to treat them.
 
I sometimes give them some money.. depends on how aggressive they are i.e. a recent trip to Amsterdam resulted in me ignoring several beggers - they were simply too persistant (i.e. annoying).
 
If it is for food, no problem I'll help em nobody should be hungry especially in this country. But for alcohol and cigarettes sheesh I have to pay for them why shoudn't they?

Yeah, me to.

Although if I am out clubbing I will give them money even though I know it's for drink, I mean that's what I would spend it on anyway:rolleyes:
 
I never give them money, but I'll take them into a store and let them pick out food they want if they are hungry... usually they decline - they want the money :)
one guy I know (he always stands in the same spot) will accept and he never gets all that much stuff, not greedy - just an oj and a sub. comes to like $5.
 
I usually just tell them to get lost or fuck off if they are annoying me. I think I've only given to bums twice in my life. Once I gave a bum a few pennies. I think I gave him two and it was more of an experiment. It may have been a nickel and 2 pennies, whatever change I had in my pocket after buying a fake I.D. when I was 16. He thanked me and gave me a god bless you. The other time was last year outside of Comerica Park. We were getting loaded before the Tigers' game and we were about to go in and my buddy had about 1/4 of a litre of crown and coke and the bums were collecting bottles. I gave him our empties and the remaing mixture and told him there was some crown royal in there and to have at it. He was very pleased.
 
I usually try and buy them food like scrappy said. I also ask them if the want to sell their kidneys. You should see the looks I get when I pull out my bowie knife! "What? You said yes! Now give me!"

i tell them to go and get a job...in chicago the bums are just damn annoying. and when you say no they get pissed and harass the hell out of you till you give in. that's where i say, "hey asswipe i work for my fucking money and i'm not about to give it to some old drunk like you who doesn't work for a goddamn thing!"

oh and i worked at a P.A.D. shelter so i know what the fuck i'm talking about. these people are junkies who are unwilling to change and live day to day getting their fix. most are this way, there are some who want to change and try yet succumb to the dark force inside them. a lot of them have serious mental issues and they don't realize half the shit they do.

don't feel sorry for these people, they don't feel sorry for themselves. they feel that you and I owe them for their pathetic lives being fucked up. well too bad for them, this is America. land of the free enterprise, and while we tolerate this shit I for one do not let them get my money.

ps. i also had my life threatened by a few of the people in the shelter. why? i still don't know, one may be because i called the cops on this one guy who was about to beat his junkie wife in his own junkie state of mind, and the other guy was just mentally unstable. no symapthy from me.

i broke the rule once the guy said he needed money for the subway (that was about a block away). So I gave him a buck, and he starts walking.... away from the subway, and coincidentally in the direction I was going in. He looked over his shoulder and said "oh i don't need the subway" and ran off :mad:
In the summer i see enough healthy-looking, decently dressed kids begging for money. Wearing newer shoes than me, hell they had Nikes I'm wearing no-names. That REALLY pisses me off. :mad: :mad:
 
O.K. here's what you do. hold 5 buck in your hand, have a bottle of crazy glue. Ask the bum, " 5 bucks for food or booze?" if he says food have him hold out his hand, place a couple of drops of crazy glue on the palm, then have him stick the palm of his hand on his fore head REAL tight. Give the 5, and tell him the glue thing was for lyin, cause you know he's going to get some night train. Then watch him try and remove his hand from his head. Bum women, ask for a BJ for 5 bucks............Gotta earn your keep on the street.
 
All them beggars are all hanging out on the main road outside of my school. I usually am with my buds so I just ignore them by engaging in a conversation. I dont feel bad at all since I give money to the food kitchen that shelters and feeds these bums. All this extra money must be for booze and crack rock.

On a side note- I worked in a hospital as a kid and one time a bum was checked into the ER. They took all his clothes (for washing bc they smelled) and found over $20K in all his pockets. He was in the hospital for getting beat up for harrassing people while panhandling.

Dude the bums in NYC are the worst!! I don't know how many times I've been told to fuck off for not giving them money! If I was a bum I wouldn't live in NYC. No way.

There was a guy here a while back who would stand at this intersection with a stoplight.. Hold his sign.. One day I offered him $100 if he would come and do my yard work.. He told me to "fuck off man, I am making more than that an hour just standing here".. That pretty much says it all.. Dont help someone who isnt willing to help themself..

i was in toronto on a school trip downtown and there was all kinds of bums with signs sitting there and shit,i just kept on walking,on our way to the gardener expressway there was two bums walking up and down stand still traffic yelling at people for money and hitting cars when people refused,it was scarey shit

i usually handle shit by simply saying no,why would i get rude they are people to,just because they are poor doesnt mean i will look down on them,maybe there habits but not them
 
FUck the beggars try livin in the city Some fuckers askin for money every time you leave the house......Bound to a wheel chair maybe for x-mas ,able bodied and lazy go die motherfucker....WHat really pisses me off is when Im on my way to work 5am stop in the gas station and some dead beat wants to pray on my sympothy cause hes been on a allnighter...Hey man can you spare a ,."Stop right there asshole control your habit or get a fuckin job..!!":insane: :destroy: :doublefi:

My future response: "When was the last time you consumed an alcoholic beverage?"

Bum: *X days/weeks ago*

My future response: "And where did you obtain the money to purchase said alcoholic beverage?"

Bum: "..."

My future response: "That's all I needed to know. Have a nice evening."

Actually, I never carry cash, so I don't really have to worry about the bum problem. Spare change? I don't have spare change. The only time I have money in my wallet is to buy carb drinks at the gym, and I take just enough out of my paycheck for it. Until bums start carrying credit card scanners, they won't get a penny out of me (and probably won't even after they get CC scanners.)

These people are all over the place here in s. cal----Don't ever be fooled by any of there stories. They want the money for Booze and booze only(sometimes drugs) but mostly booze. The only time I ever give them anything is if they tell me that they want to go buy a beer. He is truthful, I'll throw him a buck

I was down at the beach a few weeks ago and this guy had a sign at an intersection that said "who am I kidding --Im gonna use your money for a beer" funny as shit ---looked like he was cleaning up.

whats really odd is the women (usually eastern european) who wander round the trains while in motion (between carriages) with a baby.....v.dangerous but its used as a tool.

generally i dont, i usually never have spare chnge and when i do ive got it for a specific reason. when i do i give it to buskers, theres actually 1 guy i will gove some change to next time o see himas the way he asked for change was so polite i really felt bad i had no $$ on me
 
I seen a bum in Baltimore that had a sign on that read "I ain't gonna lie, I just want a beer". He also drew a beer can, and martini glass with the olive on the sign.

I'd rather drop my spare change in the Salvation Army cans, or when I see the fire fighters doing their occasional charity drive.
 
I hate bums...once when I was younger - walking the streets in Las Vegas...my friend didnt know any better and dropped a 10.00 bill in ones basket...we went to get it back and he threatened us w/a knife..ASSHOLE
 
Just steal their little change cup...if they run after you, slug them in the gut, say "Bitch, if you can run, you can work." and continue on your way with your extra earnings.
 
In Dallas the nightlly news did a panhandlers story and filmed this one dude for two weeks. He sat at a busy entersection pressing the cross button backing up traffic. He made so much money he had to make 3 deposits a day at a bank across the street. When a car gave him a stalk of bananas he threw them in the gutter..I dont give them shit...

Thats why I carry a knive in my coat and a 9mm in my sock so after I stab the fuck out of the bastard, I drop the nine by his side like he was going to shoot me. Its worked a couple of times so far:)
 
I have been known to buy them food....I don't give them money because chances are that they will just go buy a 40.....but I'll buy them food and listen to what they have to say for a while...they usually seem quite pleased with that....its amazing actually the level of intellingence that some of these men/women have....makes you wonder about yourself and why your not living on the street sometimes.....anyways.....any of you that like to have an interesting conversation just have a talk with one of them when you see one that doesn't look totally fucked up....you'd be surprised how well some of them see life

Depends, where i live the bums actually make alot of money doing this shit out on the streets. When we go downtown, we usally just spit on them because they decide to ask us 30 times whenever we pass them on the street. If we are drunk (because this shit usually happens at might in the club district) sometimes we scuffle but we don't enjoy touching them.
