Pitch shifters can be used, but they're almost always natural. Same with black metal screams... just takes practice. I had a friend in a BM band who practiced the vocals for years. DM requires more vocal skill, I think.

Modern day DM vocals often have varying degrees of Gothenberg influence to them. The olden days of Incantation-esque vocals have fallen to the background.

Its all voice training, they can do the craziest stuff when taught correctly. My friends band just got signed actually and their singer was showing me how he does whats called a pig squeal and I couldnt begin to understand how he does it. Look it up on youtube it sounds like the ring wraiths in lord of the rings. And yes it can really fuck up your voice, a perfect case being the lead singer of avenged sevenfold who can no longer scream due to the risk of losing his voice forever.
God that would be awesome! Maybe it'll teach them not to suck.
