How can you guys be so strong?

MaCPiMP1n

New member
I would like to develop my strength. I feel like a pathetic weakling compared to most of the guys on here. I'm 165@5'9 and only bench 265 for 1. :(

Do you guys revolve your training towards strenght only?
I would like to incorporate a few powerlifting moves into my training to better my physique. Any suggestions fella's?

Regards.

Most people here train WestSide which is a fairly complex system geared specifically at gaining strength. They're strong because they train smart and they're dedicated.

You could always try a modified WSB routine... or simply lower your reps to 1-3 if you want to get stronger.

That is actually a good bench, especially for someone who trains as a bb and not a powerlifter.

If you want strength, train for it. If you want muscles, train for them. You can do both, but you will see better results focusing on one over the other.

They we we train is designed for max lifts. Are bodies are geared for this lifting. BB is geared for max muscle size. Your goal should be to engourge and pump your muscles full of blood to achieve max size.

It honestly takes time. Years of time. Keep your head up...you are doing very well.

Most of us guys here do revolve around strength training and there are alot of young guys on here that are getting an early start which is good, but we only commit ourselves to one thing and it's to get stronger. So if you really want to get stronger and come over from the darkside you'll give westside a shot if not then your pretty much just messin round.

Bro that's a good lift!!
When I started lifting 4 years ago I weighed 205 and benched 185. That has changed some, but it's taken alot of great advice from fellow IronHeads and just plain time and sweat. The biggest jump in my weightlifting came when I started listening to guys like JimmyD on how to lift properly.

PS, PLJ's snickers and Gatorade diet helped aswell.LOL

I consider myself a cross trainer. I train for looks and strength. You won't become great at either one when you train for both. I'm just happy to be somewhere in the middle.
I keep my reps in the 5-6 range most of the time for the powerlifts. Frequently I'll do doubles and singles. For assistance exercises I stay in the 6-8 rep range. I feel like this gives me a good combination of strength and "pretty boy" muscles.
Don't get discouraged by your 265 lift. I've won contests in the 165 weight class with lifts in the 260-280 range.

My bench is decent, although i lack in other main exercises such as the squat and the deadlift :(

To tell you guys the truth, i'm AFRAID of the squat! Don't ask me why?! The most I've gone on a squat was 2 plates i believe, and i struggled!!! I have difficulties trying to balance that damn weight, and not to mention the incredible pain across my back from that cold iron bar.. *i know i'm such sissy* :(

Another exercise that I'm terrible at is the deadlifts!! and i think all of u can tell by just looking at my pic
attachment.php

I'm ashamed of this... I've tried different training variations and technique except powerlifting!!! that's why i'll be spending most of the time at this board to learn how to improve my "pretty boy"
muscles!! :)

Any sensible advice would be greatly appreciated!

regards,
andrew

I don't care if you have to do squats with 135...or deadlifts with the same....just do them. You will get stronger. Try doing a few sets of whatever reps you want to do on squats. Say...with 115lbs. Next week use 135, the next 155, then 175, 195, 205, 225. That is seven weeks of doing squats and I bet by the time you do that set with 225...you will be bigger, stronger, and loving squats. You can do the same with deadlifts.

Feel free to email me anytime

If the bar hurts your shoulders when you squat then you likely don't have the bar positioned properly. Try lowering the bar a little bit. You should have a nice groove on the back of your shoulders for the bar to rest in. It should be much more comfortable once you find your groove.

.......it's easy to hide behind a keyboard and type away. i suspect more than a few peeps on this board claim more than they can do!

Just remember the Internet Lift Rule. You take what someone states as their 1RM and divide by 3. That will give you their actual 1RM. Just kidding. You usually only need to divide by 2.

:) That is why I take pics...:)

rnch if your refering the to BEASTS on this board that bench over 400 or so I doubt that these guys are lying if you see how much they really know and if you want proof since not all of us know how to post pics like b fold then you should check in POWERMAG i believe they cover most competitions where these guys will be. I'm saying this on their behalf I only total around 960 as of last time I maxed out I'll find out different this saturday and all of you will know if I reached 1,000 yet.

hmm so if you need to divide by 3(sometimes 2, but i'll use 3 in this case) i should be saying i bench 570lbs... yes , im almost caught up to pljay!

deciever ;) that was great. so that means if I'm dividing by 3 for real then i'm only benching 90lbs or so but internet life i'm doing around 810 divide that by 3(right) WHOA I passed WSB benchers in OH :D :D :D :FRlol: :arty: lets celebrate

woo party at my place!. so either pljay benches like 220... or he benches 1900+ .. either way, a 132 lber benching 570 is pretty damn impressive, and so is your bench. pljay's is decent.. nothing to brag about lol

 Wait then what does that mean we do for squat and deadlifts oh ye going back to one of my other posts I forgot i deadlift and squat with the titanic on my back for squats and deadlift hummers for DE and for an ME i'll go for 18 wheelers. Deciever what about you :FRlol: The difference is no one knows about me :alien:

one time, i squatted a small condo, with 11 old women in it..i've also deadlifted 113 ethiopian children in a large crate, off a 3 inch box

See your getting the hang of it.

No but truthfully for those guys that post on here what there lifts are I honestly believe them b/c they have no reason to lie, and like I said before if we knew how to post pics like b fold then most likely everyone would.

In my case all you have to do is look out your window and i'm all over the mofo place destroying buildings and using hummers for warm up sets(back to the bullshit:D ).

I agree 100%. Guys like PowerlifterJay have their numbers posted in PLUSA and are very believable. That formula does hold some truth when you look a bodybuilding/powerlifting shit on the Internet as a whole though.

I'm too embarassed about my numbers to even post them. Lets just say that Ed Coan can sleep easy for a little while longer.

And why are you embarrassed I most likely fall under the weaker ones on here, but guess what I'm up there with the strong ones b/c I've worked for the total I have and I'm gonna keep working so it goes up, and up, and guess what UP. That's the way you should look at it. I don't care if you total 500 or 1500 or 2500 either way whatever you do is what you've worked for so it's you accomplishment and you should be proud of it and if your embarassed to post it then your embarassed to accomplish more

cubanito... i thihnk that if fang totaled 2500, you'd care, he'd be one of the greatest powerlifters ever if he did

Ahh, humor. Some people do inflate their numbers on the Internet. This is not the only place I post/read and some 'internet' people have been proven liars other places. There was a lot of this about a year ago when nearly everyone who was asked to put up or shut up, shut up.

I don't find this board to be full of liars. Its humor that has a basis in fact. Now I need to get back to my 150 lb. dumbbell curls.

deciever ur right but i was trying to make a point. FNG i meant no flames or nethin to ya i was just wondering. make sure next week you do the 155lb db's you gotta keep pushin yourself:D

I'll tell you why I'm embarassed to post my numbers. Its because of the numbers I put up as a 17 year old raw 165 pounder. I'm still proud of those numbers and I can't exceed them yet as a 210 pounder. There was no Internet, no PLUSA and no decent coaches around then.

If I knew then what I know now and had the money that I have now to piss away on powerlifting, those numbers would be even better. That was 20 years ago but I shit you not, I will get to comparable numbers (by formula) and then some before they put me in my pine box.

were you lifting consistantly the entire 20 years between than and now, and just post your totals. im sure they are fine. And is good to see that your still trying to, alot of peopple just give up if they cant reach where they were or where they want to be.

No! I quit lifting for 19 years. I started again last winter and then didn't lift for about 2 months last summer because I was working 80-100 hours a week. I've been lifting regularly since Thanksgiving except when I got sick recently.

As a side note, my muscle mass didn't shrink much after I turned 19 (it took about 2 years to lose the extra mass I built up) until I hit 35. My libido also took a slight nose dive about then. That is when I said, "fuck this shit" and started lifting again. I've noticed that lifting has increased my libido. Food for thought anyway.

I meant to say that at 35, the muscle started to 'melt' away. That is when I got bummed and started lifting again. The extra fat I put on since turning 30 also had something to do with it.

evetually you will get back to your prime lifts, and if not, just know that you gave it a hell of a try. i dont know anyone with the dedication to try to get back to their prime, once they lose it. most people jsut accept it and move on. just be glad your trying and that you have more dedication than mostpeople ever will

HELL YEA I'm with deciever on this one. At least you came back to it and didn't walk away. That happened to me but now with a 19 year leave of powerlifting it was more of a 6 month leave from it. Although that's a short time...MAN... 6 months leave of a sport and you REALLY decrease strength and turn all your weight into fat. But either way I'm back now and i'm sticking around. I'm glad people like you(FNG) post things like this b/c I keep repeating to myself I'M NOT GONNA QUIT,....I'M NOT GONNA QUIT and this way I won't b/c I see how it's been on other people and then I always have something to go for.

Ahh, the internet division rule. Maybe we should have applied that to "Blackman" that was looking for sponsors.

I am approaching a 500 bench, PowerlifterJay is benching 600 plus, Irishpower has done over 600. There are some strong fellas on here, and I am not including myself in that bunch. After I have officially hit 500 in a meet, then maybe I can break into that bunch.

People that have trained westside for a while are usually going to be strong. It is the most scientifically advanced method yet available for increasing strength. You have to be dedicated, eat a lot, rest when away from the gym, say your prayers and eat your vitamins.

And quit reading muscle and fitness, and flex magazine, if you want to get strong. Read Powermag, and PowerliftingUSA.

If this comment is directly towards me.. what gives u the right to assume or analyze someones strength?

To me that sounds like ur mocking my lift.. I don't really care if u don't believe me, because I'm not on here to compete /w u guys..
I'm not trying to compete /w u or u! I'm competing /w myself solely..

.. to brighten things up a bit, i was actually BS /w the previous numbers.. my bench is near 900, squat well over 1200 and my deadlift is hovering around 1400.. even if u divide those by ur internet numbers I sti'll kicked all ur arses ;)

So who's gonna present me /w my ONLINE trophy?

That guy's comment was not directed at you. He was referring to the regular members of this board. This was a good thread and I am glad you started it.

As for people sitting behind a keyboard, and coming up with this shit out of their head, I reply that I post with my real name, my real city, and when I post numbers they are real numbers. I don't think the regular members on here are inflating numbers because for one thing, a bunch of us know each other, and for another thing, the numbers don't drastically change when the same people are posting a few months later. If I was making up something to put on the internet, I might say I had a 10 inch pecker, but then if I was going to continually tell that story, either I better memorize that number, or write it down or something, otherwise I might post that I had 13 inches, and somebody would call bullshit.

Bullshit is called on this board from time to time. But it is usually called when somebody who never posts here comes on saying how he knows some raw drug free guy who squats a house, benches a truck, and pulls like a mule, but never competes because he just lifts for himself and has nothing to prove to anyone. Whatthefuckever. give me a break. If you are going to run your mouth, go to the meet, and lay it on the line. That being said, I am going to be competing in McAlester, OK on the 16th day of march 2002 at the Pittsburgh County convention center on highway 270 3 miles east of Mcalester.

Anyone who thinks I am full of shit is welcome to come and say it to my face. But please do me the courtesy of waiting until after I set a new record before saying so. I tell you what, tell Bigokie, and Screwball how full of shit I am when you get there, and they will keep you company until I am available to take the matter up myself. The florida crew will be in St. Pete on this saturday, and I am sure that JimmyDean, PowerlifterJay, Freak19, Grimmer, and the rest of the crew would not mind a bit if you showed up to see if they are for real or not.

I say what I say above knowing full well that I may be setting myself up to make myself look like a fool. I may go down and get hurt in warmups, I may bomb out of the whole meet, I may catch a cold, and be 50 or 100 lbs off my potential best lift. But I have the NUTZ to go out and lay it on the line, and take that risk. Those gym heroes that never compete are the guys who always seem to be posting impossible numbers. You will never understand all the glory that is possible from human achievement, unless you risk all the failures that go along with a failed experiment.

Damn brother, your HARDCORE!!
I wish u the best of luck!
:)

Can I get a witness...

Damn straight! If you can't put your shit on the line by competing against others in sanctioned meets then keep your fucking mouth shut. The outcome in a sanctioned meet is less important than the "stones" it took to compete in the first place.

Brian, unless something unexpected comes up in the next week then I'll be in McAlester (sp?) on Saturday the 16th. I can't wait to see you crush that record. You've done all that is necessary up to this point to post the numbers you want. Don't forget that and trust in your training. You won't fail because your family, friends, BigOkie and I won't let you fail. The only thing left to do is finish that shit. The rest is gravy...

- Screwball

Hey BRAIN you forgot to throw me in the ST PETE bunch. It's all good though I'll go along with "the crew" since I'm not a big lifter anyway. Either way to all of you out there that think your big by posting huge numbers but have never picked up a weight you gotta prove your shit before you speak...BIATCHs.

Brian couldnt have summed it up any better.

Cant wait to see how your new record boost syour confidence Brian. That will be the lift that lets you knwo your on your way to bigger lifting. Good luck.

I too am opening with a State record. Actually it will be beating the one i set last Aug, but either way i am ready, and confident. So wether or not i bomb , big weight wil fly!

A thousand apologies little brother (Cubanito) I put in the Crew, because I knew I would fart around and forget someone. Totally inadvertant. You are a definate and colorful part of the Florida crew, and I would not have nearly as much fun on this board without you being present, so don't read anything into me not mentioning you directly by name.

Thanks to the others who backed up my statement earlier. After i calmed down and read the post, I thought, damn, people that don't know me are going to think I am a maniac, and the people who do know me are going to know I am a maniac. I am just raging this week, because the meet is Saturday, and I am getting into the zone. By friday nobody will even want to be around me, I am sure. I was like this going into karate matches or toughman tournaments too. So if I offended anyone with my prior post . . .
FUCK YOU!!! Oops, there goes the rage again.

Jay, I certainly hope that you are right, and I imagine that you are, as usual. I loaded up the bar with 445, which is 5 lbs more than the existing state record last night, and using the pull the bar to your chest method, managed to touch and then blew it up, till I hit the damn uprights with my left side!!! However, what made me pretty happy was that even after getting a little out of groove, and hitting the uprights, I was able to recover and lock it out. God Bless board presses and rack lockouts. Thanks for the tip about pulling the bar down against the shirt. Cool thing is, today, I am not sore or tired in the least, and I was honest to God, yawning a couple of minutes before making that 445, so I think that with a couple of bottles of thermadrene, a couple of cans of 180, a gallon of gatorade and a good night's sleep, we might have a decent showing on Saturday.

Thanks to all, and everyone kick some ass this weekend. No bombs, try big numbers and get them.

B.

Brian, first of all, good luck on Sunday, I know you will fuck shit up.

Second of all, you said you were yawning before that 445 attempt like it was something that would be a bad indication. I have often noticed times when I get to the gym feeling groggy and blase and go on to have a great workout, increasing poundages and reps. I think we may be on to something here....

Also, make sure you get a good night's sleep on FRIDAY night. I have noticed and also have heard said that it's the sleep you get TWO nights before a big event that counts.

Good luck everyone that's competing this weekend, make us proud!

JC

BRAIN it's cool bro. I guess I've been lookin back at some of my post and it seems like I have senioritis online too. What I mean by this is at my school now since I'm a senior this year I don't care about nethin i've been doing the stupidest things i never woulda pictured myself doing. So i come home from school come on here with all my brothers and act stupid the same way. Of course I take liftin serious but it's suppose to be fun. so talkin bout it should be fun too;)
