Hormonal effect of male consuming soy protein

plornive

New member
What effects does soy protein have on my hormones if I am a male? Does it change my level of estrogen or testosterone? How about growth hormone? I have heard that soy protein consumption prevents the growth of tumors that rely on male hormones to grow (derivatives of testosterone, in this case). Supposedly, this is due to soy isoflavones that limit enzymes meant to break down testosterone into other hormones. Will this make me more like a woman? Will it hinder my ability to stay lean? How much soy protein is safe for me to take?

Thanks for any info!

I don't trust it. There are studies going all the way back to the 1930's showing the negative effects of soy.

Surprise, the chinese didn't consume much soy; they used it as a soil enriching substance for other plants. They consumed rather small quantities of it.

The anti-cancer effects of soy are true, but there are cancer causing agents in soy that cancel out any benefit.

Soy contains high levels of inositol hexaphosphate, which has been shown to chelate valuable minerals from the body when taken for long periods of time. Since minerals are arguably the most valuable substance your body can utilize (with the exception of water and air) it doesn't make sense to take much of this stuff.

I personally think it is estrogenic based on some studies linking it to problems with children and normal development.

Too risky for me. The benefits of whey (as long as you're not lactose intolerant) outweigh it tenfold.

I've read "experts" opinions on soy and phytoestrogens, and have seen conflicting reports. Some experts say not to eat soy because it mimicks estrogen, others say to eat it because it will trick the body into thinking estrogen levels are high and thus lower the body's own estrogen production.

We're operating on the assumption that estrogen is bad of course. I eat gobs of soy and recently got my Estradiol (e2) results back, it was 10 with a normal range of 10-50 (forgot the units). Not exactly scientific, but i'm gonna stick with the soy munching. :chomp:

I have never read anywhere that phytoestrogens cause cancer... Phytoestrogens are not as potent and the estrogens weightlifters try to block or use 6OXO to cancel out. Infact I've read one story on pubmed that soy protein increased testosterone levels in rats

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/...ve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15219630

And another story where soy made monkeys more aggressive

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/...ve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15053944

But then again I've also read a study where rats did not grow as big when fed soy diets. So it really hard to say at this point.

I have read that people who take Whey in 2 parts and Soy Protein Isolate (90%) 1 part have made gains from a will brink artcle. it does have some health benifits.

From my understanding, soy acting as a phyto-estrogen, will decrease estrogens if taken in a large enough amount. This is because they will bind to estrogen receptor sites and exert less effect than actual estrogen. The problem is, when not enough is taken, it actually compounds the effects of estrogen rather than inhibiting it. Then once the estrogen levels are high, your body will shut off production of testosterone in an attempt to lower levels. Through research on pubmed, estrogen has been associated with increased prostate size by causing the epithelial or stromal cells (or both) to swell.

I have used a product I bought from a website (www.hotbodz.com) for a similar purpose. I was having a hard time breking plateaus in the gym and was feeling sluggish, so I went to see my doctor for the fatigue and had my hormone panel ran. I was told me testosterone levels were low and estrogen levels were high (almost a 1 to 1 ratio). I found this website while doing research on herbal products that could help me, I bought and used a product which I believe was called Nolvafen or something similar. Anyway, at my next doctor's appointment, my hormone levels were back in allignment and my energy returned.

Hope this helps.

There are several articles at T-Mag about this topic. I'd get you a link but I'm too lazy, the article is called "Poison Protein".

Soy can exert hormonal effects in men and women.

Simple use of google would return the result on the first hit

It's hard to accept this as "science" when the doctor is trying to sell a book!
I'd be interested in taking the specific claims and running them through pubmed or medline and seeing what I find

My wife used to eat a boul of soy every day to increase breast size. It worked, also increased vaginal juice. It was like taking estrogen pill. It is said to be a natural way to increase estrogen in your body.

Read more about it before taking.

i am constantly amazed at the great info one can get from this site - i've done a lot of personal research on soy vs whey vs animal protein and the bottom line is this - the body does not like soy protein! - one actually has to overload the body with soy to get the body to absorb it in any effective amount (for muscle growth) and then the nitrogen balance is so out of whack that it becomes catabolic and can contribute to cancer - about soy being good for women that info came from a study funded by the soy growers in this country and if one can get hold of it (some reason the original study is not available at this time) it actually states that soy is bad for women (especilly over 40) because it contributes to cancer in women

I've still not read any serious scientific article (that excludes t-mag BS articles that are aimed at selling their whey products) about soy having an estrogenic effect on young males

and all the pseudo scientific articles on a few old obese female rats are pretty much pointless
