Grab a yam and soak it in water, wipe it off to remove any bacteria. With a fork, punch holes around the yam, not deep, but enough so the points get through. Now grab a paper towel (Bounty, as an example) and wrap the yam in the towel. Now soak in water and squeeze dry so that the paper towel and yam is still damp/moist. Throw in a microwave for 4-5 minutes. When done, remove towel, and cut off the edges of the yam. Feel free to cut the yam through the middle and add some salsa
If you cook it in the oven it takes a good 40-50mins. What helps is taking a nail or some other nail-like object and spear it through the yam lengthwise so that the heat can more easily penetrate the center of the yam.
My mom actually found a neat thing for me last xmas that is like a circular stand that has 4 spikes going around it. You spear your yams on it and put it in the oven. Same concept.
Or you could just go the way of the microwave and have it ready in 5
