HIIT treadmill or eliptical??

i've always done it on the treadmill, ut last night there were noneavailable and i didn't feel like running outside so i used the eliptical which made me angry....what a difference. i barely made it through 17 minutes on there....maybe it's because i'm so used to running but i think i got a better workout on the eliptical....after the 20 minutes was up i went in the locker room and sat on the bench shaking for about 5 minutes before i could gather my composure and walk home haha

I noticed the same thing when I went from doing HIIT on the treadmill to doing it outside.

I've been doing HIIT on the treadmill off and on for the past month or so... Can make it through a 20-25 minute program (5 min warmup, then 1 min sprint, 1 min recovery cycles) without too many problems.

Yesterday morning I did HIIT outside and man what a difference. 5 min warmup, then 30 second sprint, 30 second recovery cycles. About halfway into each sprint cycle I wanted to die... I was only able to do about 7-8 total cycles before calling it quits (so, about 13 mins of workout outside vs. 25 mins of workout on the treadmill).

Such a huge difference...

Well that is PROBABLY due to the fact that you are more restricted with not only how you run on a treadmill, but also how fast. When you run outside your body is able to do it more naturally and at your actual maximum effort instead of the 10 or 12mph the treadmill permits..

treadmill also speeds up and slows down gradually, eliptical is immediate, you get more T.I.H.* on the eliptical.

:lmao:

I have found that most cardio activates dont' carry over to one another. I can blast it on the ellipitcal but it is a different ball game on jump rope or tread or boxing.

Yeah personally I prefer sprints outside or the elliptical inside compared to the treadmill.
As Ghede said, the gradual speed changes kill things on the treadmill.

Just be careful if you keep count of cals on the elliptical, they overcount by 30%.

do you think this is true for the higher end elipticals with a HR monitor? I have a precor 5.33 with a wireless HR monitor (sweet machine) and I would say it counts far less cals than the precor non-NR monitored at my gym.

after 30 mins of HIIT Ive burnt 500 to 600 cals, give or take at home. sound at all accurate?

Not only are you more restricted on a treadmill or eliptical, but running outside is really high-impact(elipticals are non-impact and treadmills are cushioned) plus it takes more energy to absorb and propel your body. Also treads are very precise with the actual speed versus when you run outside so you have more flux in how fast you're running which takes more effort to keep your pace. Like Pintoca said, the more you do something the easier it becomes especially simple motor skills. Muscles adapt rather quickly after doing long-distance(slow-twitch fibers) or HIIT sprints(fast-twitch fibers) cardio so mixing it might help your body not catch on as quickly.

HR monitors help in the accuracy of cals burned, but I would just use it as a general reference. Knowing what your LBM + weight + knowing your real RHR to get your = Targeted HR is a more precise way to know your cals burned.

When you guys do HIIT on an elliptical do you up the level every other minute or just move faster. I dont know if im explaining my question right, but in other words would you change the intesity from say 10 up to 20, go balls to the wall, and then back down to 10 for a minute. Or do you just keep the intensity level the same on the machine thoughout, and just physically increase the intensity every other minute.

I Do Both....1 Minute I Do Level 8 Btwn 120-140.....then I Switch To Level 12 And Try To Keep It Above The 170 Level.....tough As Balls Man

I was referring to the Precors with HR monitors in them. I know they all have those hand bar things where you grab to measure your HR, but I also have a Polar HR monitor that is compatible with the Precor (so I don't have to wear the watch when I use it) but I don't believe it is that much more precise. Like Devcon said, it is just a generalization and I would consider it more of a guide then an actual value as far as cals burned. I use both mainly to keep track of my HR and stay in a certain zone rather then a calorie count.

I still have yet to find a method to incorporate my rhr, lbm, and weight into a formula where I can determine the exact number of cals I burnt doing cardio (also incorporating time and avg HR for the exercise). Anybody have any info on this?

Agreed that from machine to machine to outside...im capable of putting up a 6 minute mile on the eliptical..not the same on the tread mill and even slower outside on the tract. I think that is one of the reasons its has been suggested that whed doing cardio you split it between machines.
