Hi Guys. I have "weightlifter's" shoulder. :(

Totally bumming I have to have surgery in a couple weeks. I had never even heard of this before:

"Weightlifter's shoulder is a painful deterioration of the distal end of the clavicle (collar bone). It is an overuse phenomenon that causes tiny fractures along the end of the clavicle. A breakdown of the bone (osteolysis) occurs.

Weightlifters aren't the only ones affected. Female bodybuilders, air-hammer operators, soldiers, handball players, and others can develop this problem. For that reason, it is also known as distal clavicular osteolysis (DCO). Osteolysis refers to the resorption of bone at the site of the injury."

I've not ever been in the hospital for anything or had surgery. :( I just picked up 2 Combat classes which obviously is not going to happen now...

Anybody been through this? Fucking totally sucks.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I've had ACL surgery but nothing like you describe. I can say that surgery sucks and I don't know the expectations for a full recovery but you seem to have the work ethic to fully recover if it's possible; I wish you the best

Thanks Buddy, from what I've read it sounds like it's a pretty clean heal. :( Guess it's time for me to like spin classes or some shit like that again.

Nah, I gave myself knee tendonitis doing physical therapy:) If 100 reps are good then 200 must be twice as good...it's the bodybuilder way. :)

I've never heard of this. Weightlifting is supposed to increase bone density not cause them to deteriorate. Can this be prevented with supplementation?

Some people say glucosamine , Chondrotin , MSM help.
I've gotten off my "move free" to save a few dimes , I'm going to get back on some after reading this thread
Other say neutral grip bench presses don't cause them pain. Then again Charles Poloquin says 50% of bench presses should be done with dumbells anyway. So some training mods can help here

Ive had this surgery twice, once on each shoulder. Had 9 millimeters cut off each distal end of clavicle for osteolysis. That was in 2002-03. Your arm is in a sling for about a week, then you slowly get some movement in the joint, then you slowly lift baby weights, etc etc. Its like any other surgery, you gotta take the time to recover and dont try any shortcuts and do what your doctor says and youll be ok. If I can remember I was back to 100% in the gym in 5 or 6 months. But if you arent lifting really heavy weights and mainly focus on cardio you could be sooner.
