I just got home and on my door was a business card from the U.S. Customs Service. On the back it asks for me to call them tomorrow. I mailed out some money a few days ago to a "friend" overseas. What do I do?

If you just mailed a couple of days ago I don't think your letter made it over there and your order sent out already. Give them a call and see what they want. Worst case scenario just play dumb if you feel the heat.

Even if you put your real return addy on it, they still can't prove it was you that actually mailed it, unless they have video from the PO. If they dont have that, then keep in mind that they have no proof that the money is even yours. Just play dumb. Anyone could have used your return addy ya know?!

If it was 2 days ago, it looks like your being watched. Have you had any recent encounters with people asking you about gear? Have you told anybody that you will hook them up when your stuff comes in?
There is no problem with you calling the customs agent before your attn. if you can keep you mouth shut when he asks you questions. Just call him and say "This is so and so and you left your business card here for me to call, what do you need?" Then SHUT UP....
If he starts asking for confessions or what kind of things you order from overseas simply state "Am I being charged with anything, if so I want to speak with my attorney, if not I do not wish to answer any more questions at this time."
Then call your attorney, but DO NOT give ANY info, no matter how nice the guy is or how much shit is dribbling down your leg at the time.

i dont understand this.......you sent the money out a few days ago and there at your house today????? if it was sent overseas do you really think that he has your money by now? i dont see how they can react so quick unless your reciever is flaged. by reciever i mean the source is well known and they know what the funds were for.

Yeah I've already emailed my source to let him know what the deal was. Apartment is clean + computer, as soon as I get off tonight, I'll get the cookies off and won't be back on for a few days.

What would happen if I didn't call him, have a clean apt/computer, and just act as though someone took the business card off my door? Would that work? Or would that look like I was avoiding them and in a sense admitting guilt?

Yeah they don't have anything, except they intercepted my money going out via the mail. I've instructed my source not to send anything to my addy (he wouldn't anyway, because he won't send until he receives). My place is clean, I'm looking for help, before tomorrow and I decide what my intentions are to do with this ordeal.

I'm not going to lie, I'm shitting my fucking pants on this one! I'm sure they're just going to let me know that the opened my letter with the money inside, then they'll ask me who and what's it for. I have no clue how to answer that, which is why I don't want to call in the first place.

i personally think, they dont give a shit about you, what you ordered or how small your testicles have shrunk now. I am sure there just trying to build a case against someones operation. Im sure they have more things to worry about like say terrorist or drugs like meth, X chemcial suppliers, than joe schow who wants to improve his bicep curls. I think I'm going to do what Ironmaster suggested. We don't respond the letters so why respond to this? And I agree that if they really wanted me they wouldn't have tipped me off, now my place is clean, so if they had something before, it's gone now. I figure worst case I keep ignoring them, at the absolute worst, they get a search warrant, but my place is clean, and then they have nothing. Odds are I'm freaking out over hardly anything, but its still is very sketchy. 2 days from when I put out my order does seem really fast IMO, I can't imagine it could be processed this quick.
They have nothing on you if they didnt bust your door down. Just admit nothing and your cool. If they say we just want to verify some information with you dont because the info can be used against you. Call them if you like and ask why they left a card on your doorstep. If they ask about the money tell them what money. If you admit to nothing they cant do anything to ya. Just turn there questions into yours after a few they will get pissed off and quit asking questions.

Ok, I went ahead and called them. They said I wasn't in trouble and customs is not after me. I made an apointment to come down and answer a few questions on their request not mine. It's not about my recent gift to my friend, if you know what I mean. They are trying to build a case against an old source. Get this: They called our Team Lawyer to let them know what was going on. So I asked the agent in charge again to make sure I wasn't in any kind of trouble and he said no, but if I didn't coorperate I'd have to go before a grand jury. They even knew I had a game this weekend and were willing to work around my hectic schedule if needed.

why did you call them? everyone said not to. remember when you go in and answer questions anything you say can and will be used against you. even if they tell you they are building a case against someone else they can also charge you. Tell them your lawyer has advised you not to talk to them and make them subpoena you. If you get involved you are bringing trouble your way.

The only way to make a hard drive unaccessable to the feds is to put it somewhere that it will not be found..........Or incinerate the piece of shit.
Best bet is to just take the hard drive to a friends house or metal shop and put the fucker to the grinder till your knuckles are bleeding.

Hard is right, the old rule of thumb was formatting it (writing it with zeros) seven times was the limit as far as them retrieving data from it. There are bulk drive erasers (like tape erasers) which provide a magentic field instantly, that might help, and they probably would not want you that bad anyway, basically if you do the shit at home and they bust down the door your fucked - unless your data is offsite, or never surf for t his stuff period yada yada, just like not keeping the gear in your house.
