Congrats velvett. That's really nice.
Protestants have godparents, but at least in the church that I grew up in, it was more ceremony than anything else. You show up at the baptism but really, it ends up being just a way to honor the mother's friends!
You basically buy Christmas gifts if you live far away. I don't know what you do if you live close by.

I have a couple friends who are Catholic and Godfathers, and here's what they said.
You basically are supposed to be a mentor to you Godchild; attend birthday and school functions, help guide them in the Catholic faith, and basically treat the Godchild as if it were your own child as much as possible, because there's a chance the child may be your child someday.
