Heavy bag training?

Great! And it is a big reason I have a torn rotator cuff! What weight is the bag? You should ALWAYS have someone hold the bag for you. This will help prevent shoulder injuries. As for cardio and fat burning, AMAZING!

Bag work is my favourite cardio :)
It's best to do interval training though, 20 mins is a long time to go all out. I do 2 mins max effort, 5 mins easy pace, 1 minute rest and repeat. Usually for about 40-45 mins.

I never have anyone to hold the bag, if your footwork and distancing is good it's not necessary. In fact you can use the movement of the bag to simulate an opponents movement. Although thus depends on where it's hanging, the longer the chain the further it'll move when you hit it.

The reason to have someone hold the bag is when the bag starts swing toward you and you strike the combined force is astronomical! I've trained in many boxing gyms and in the marines. You will never see a boxer training without someone holding the bag. But, if you are just throwing light punches to get your heart rate up I'm sure you can go solo. Just don't want anyone suffering the injuries I have from bad training.

I've been boxing for 14 years and kickboxing even longer, I've never had anyone hold the bag for me. Yeah the bag coming towards you will increase the impact force but it's not dangerous as long as technique is correct, it'll just condition the hands and wrist more.

100% right on! I only have about 4 years, but I know enough.

I totally respect your experience. I've been boxing a long time too, 21 years, and competed at the USNA Brigade Championships 2 years with a full staff of trainers.

That said, we both know every gym and trainers have a huge variety of different opinions and training styles. I just try to warn of injuries I've suffered. Nice to meet another seasoned boxer! Keep your chin down bro'! ;-)

Good to meet you too! 21 years is a long time bro, respect for that.

I've trained under several different coaches and yeah, they all have different ideas and techniques. :) I had one who kept trying to get me to fight southpaw! God knows why, I'm right handed!

Haha that's funny because I'm left handed and they made me box right handed stance. it was strange at first but ended up catching many people off guard. My left hook got nicknamed the "sidewinder". Haha
