TMZ has learned that Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. He was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film "The Dark Knight."

the new blurb:

TMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime, adding pills were found near his body.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

The NY Times is reporting a masseuse arrived at his apartment and was let in the door by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger's bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom door and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They attempted to wake him, and when they couldn't they called 911.

We're told when paramedics responded the actor was in full cardiac arrest. They attempted to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suicide???

I'd guess blow and opiates.

Too bad, he was really talented.

According to reports now, there were some kind of pills nearby, but they didn't say what kind.

My money's on oxy's. I've known 5 people that have died in the last 2 years from that shit. They mixed it with blow or extacy and GHB when they died. It's such a waste to go that way.

Here is an interesting question... if the massage guy or the maid had a camera (phone or whatever) and snapped pics of his body and such and sold it to the Enquire (or whoever) for like $500,000 what would the legal ramifications of that be?

I can only wonder why none of the 200 peeps in Anna Nicole rooms after she died did not take photos of her body.

If they were invited in and it appears they were , then Im quite sure its public property....

I was shocked when I just got online and saw that he had died. It is so sad he was so young and his career was really starting to take off. I was just thinking about how good the new Batman will do and ET was talking about how good he was in the movie. Such a shame! He also leaves behind a young daughter.

I used to think that I wanted to go out on top like that. Now days I kind of think the downward spiral might be interesting and would rather live to see my life crumble before me as I get old.

All you old fuckers out there who are going to preach about how life is better when you are old can screw off, we all know you would just be telling a lie to justify your crappie existence.

One of the best actors of his generation.

From what I hear, his performance as the Joker blows Nicholson out of the water.

I heard something about the pills looking like over the counter sleeping pills.

I saw that too. It's weird because OTC sleeping pills are basically benadryl. I've taken too much of that before and it just gives you a creepy crawly feeling and makes you really tired but unable to sleep. It jerks you awake like when you're falling asleep and then jolt out of it.

sad. he really had a long powerful career ahead of him.

he took a chance with brokeback, and that courage won him a lot of points in h'wood.

Really Lestat - move on. How come every post out here has to go to your personal war with religion.

Re: Heath Ledger Dead

I actually feel better that I was one of the last "in the know" on EF for celebrity gossip.

When I date a chick that follows the tabloids it's a break up sign. :)

Check out all the spectators in this thread. All the world's a stage.

Why does noone care when a regular joe dies? I didn't know this guy.

What's so sad about it? No more suffering for him. Only sad for the survivors.

It will do even better now. What role does he play?

...answering my own question:

And in what may be his final finished performance, Ledger proved that he wouldn't be intimidated by taking on a character as iconic as Jack Nicholson's Joker. Ledger's version of the "Batman" villain, glimpsed in early teaser trailers, made it clear that his Joker would be more depraved and dark.

Sounds like it will be a good movie, he has the right approach to playing the Joker.

Why did the housekeeper call one of the Olsen twins before calling 911? Christ, was she checking if cleaning up a dead body was in her job description or something? Death Ledger is +1 for the housekeeper I guess....

Sad for his family and child.

The story I read was that she did not call the Olsen twins she called their bodyguard because apparently that bodyguard was a friend of the housekeepers. That is how the Olsen twins got all involved in this story.

Heath Ledger was a BIG crush of mine. So sexy and charismatic...

UGH. Poor guy. Whether it was suicide or an accident, I hope he is in heaven now and that his family finds peace.

I think that because he died so young, he will be a legend like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and other beautiful people who died young.

I'm just saying that generations will be fascinated by him. I'm not sure why you found that so amusing. Stars who die young hold some fascination over future generations, for some reason.

James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Heath Ledger.

Seriously?

James Dean and Marilyn Monroe were iconic figures of their own time frame when they passed. Heath Ledger, not so much.

He will definately have a mystique to him. He blew up the screen as the gay cowboy and then his final cinematic portrayal was a psychotic Joker. People will always look at the last film and wonder "what if". Had his last performance been a complete dud, it might be the opposite.

network news is calling it an "accidential overdose"

"Blew up the screen"? Holy shit, you guys are out of your minds.

lmfao.

I hope this isn't the impression we leave on the next generation. Our grandparents and parents had wars, sexual revolutions, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, James Dean (as mentioned), Marilyn Monroe - we have Heath Ledger and gay cowboys and Paris Hilton / Britney Spears.

Fantastic.

If I knew more about pop culture I'd rattle off a bunch of young not-so-great actors who died that you don't remember. But alas, I don't.

However, I'm confident that Heath ledger WILL NOT be remembered in the same way that James Dean and MM are. That's for sure.

MM was just a centerfold model who made a few pretty bad movies. :whatever:

River Phoenix isn't an icon for his generation today, nor is Chris Farley, or Sam Kinnison. The latest one to come close is John Belushi, IMHO. Like I said James Dean and Marilyn Monroe were symbols of the times they grew up in, Heath hadn't reached that level of Status.

Agreed...but maybe like River Phoenix. People remember him and his untimely death, though with less reverence of the other two.

River Phoenix was a damn fine actor, actually. =-)

I didn't say he wasn't. But he isn't in that group with Monroe and Dean. Neither is Ledger, but he made enough of a splash with brokeback that I think he gets at least to River status of rememberence.

Perhaps. I guess people are suckers for drug OD's. I don't think I have ever seen Heath Ledger act and a quick look at his movies shows that a James Dean does not he make.

IMO, glorifying people when they are dead (or rather, overglorifying) is a disgraceful act. It's almost like saying "You weren't good enough as the person you truly were, so we're gonna go ahead and make you even better in our imaginations!!!".

(this is now me going off on a tangent.....) My first real brush with death was when I was in the 7th grade, I think. This 6th grader got hit by a car on his bike and died. He was a complete shit. Total terror. Everyone hated him. An evil little bastard. At the funeral and afterwards in class everyone was crying and memorializing the kid. I felt gross for being around it. Even at that young age I remember talking to one of my teachers and communicating my disgust for everyone's lies.

That's neither here nor there. RIP to Heath Ledger and best wishes to his family, for sure.

Brad Renfro died last week. and Suzanna Pleshette, too....

Slim Whitman, too. Who I dare say, may be more of an icon than Heath Ledger. Slim has been parodied in movie after movie. Has a cult following, too.

Oh, I wasn't commenting that you were saying he wasn't. =-) I was just commenting about him.

I think that we everyone is blowing MM out though because of precisely what I'm talking about. She has that mystique of having died in her prime. If she had grown old and not so beautiful, as Elizabeth Taylor did, we wouldn't look at her the same way as we do.

the thing about pop culture is that it moves too fast. and that includes giving undue accolades...the Rat Pack had several multi-talented stars that could pull off anything, and lived just as big off screen as on.....nowadays, some fat-ass neurotic drop out gets attention for shopping at a Target or being pulled over for DUI's....and what are they known for besides what their parents toil brought them? no wonder the middle east wants to eradicate us....
