This is a big reason why The US didn't go all the way to Baghdad in '91 and support the uprising in the south.

The US didn't want Saddam replaced with a fundamentalist regime likely to be anti-americn. They were also worried about the spread of Iranian influence in the region and wanted secular Saddam to stay in Iraq for that very reason.

I think US policymakers feel the time is right to occupy Iraq and get a pro-US military government installed.

I think US policymakers feel the time is right to occupy Iraq and get a pro-US military government installed.

Or at least a western-friendly one, kind of like Iran prior to the Ayatollah, except without the oppression hopefully.

The same way we treated Japan after we royally kicked their asses.

Now they are the second largest economy on the planet, behind US.

We made our line in the sand and if Bush backs down from that and capitulates to France and Germany and Russia and doesn't attack without the approval of the UN, then we will be attacked left and right by terrorists who will now see us as the weakest group of people on the planet ripe for the killing.

We made our line in the sand and if Bush backs down from that and capitulates to France and Germany and Russia and doesn't attack without the approval of the UN, then we will be attacked left and right by terrorists who will now see us as the weakest group of people on the planet ripe for the killing.

Not to mention our troops will have sucked it up again, responding to the call and sitting in the desert for months without getting any action.
