On the morning I was born, the headlines of the world's newspapers said "Andrea Doria Sinks". The Italian ocean liner had a mid-Atlantic collision with a freighter. Only a few lives were lost, most were rescued and taken back to New York that morning.

One of the passengers was Jerry Leiber of the songwriting team Leiber & Stoller. They wrote many hit songs in the '50s, including "Under The Boardwalk", "Stand By Me", "Jailhouse Rock", "Love Potion #9" and even "Stuck In The Middle With You" (as made famous by the "Goodfellas" soundtrack).

As Leiber arrived at the pier in Manhattan, he was greeted by his partner, who proceeded to tell him that a song they wrote for Big Momma Thornton in 1953 had become a hit for some truck driver from Memphis. That song was "Hound Dog".

At about the same time that morning, my mom was giving birth.
