Gym vs. meet

I'm curious as to how you guys have faired at your meets. Do you guys hit big PR's at meets or not even touch your gym numbers? I have a meet in less than 5 weeks and am looking to hit PR's in all 3 lifts. I realize that some people don't even match gym PR's at meets. I just want to see what you guys think.

Deadlift- in my 2 meets, set 2 PRs
Squat- Tied PR in one, 10 lbs short in another
bench - 10 lbs short in first one, 25 lbs short in the second meet

PR's are always the meet goals. If you conistantly fail to set PR's periodically then your training and/or meet preparation needs to be re-evaluated. Deciding on attempts for each lift is also an art. Many times the conservative lifter with a well-thought out plan of attack will defeat a stronger lifter. Something to think about.

Your gonna have to understand that when u get into a meet ur gonna be nervous. and that is gonna take alot out of u. being nervous is normal cause if you werent nervous then your not a competitor. and you never no maybe you might have one of those days were ur just not as strong. just make sure when you are at your meet just be calm and stay focused and make your PR's realistic. you might not hit PR's in all three lifts, but you better fight to get all three.
Good Luck at Your Meet!

Go for a pr in all three lifts, on your third attempts!!!

Read that again.

Then read it again.

Go for an opener, especially in the squat, that you can get passed by the meanest most pain in the ass judge in the world, cause that is probably who is going to be judging you. Open with something you can get in your sleep, cause those jitters can be a real energy sapper.

This last meet was by far my best, and I hardly even watched the other lifters going before me. I am in the last flight toward the end of the benchers, so I missed most of the meet, but not watching everyone else go, and not getting excited for them really helped me to save energy and remain focused. You will figure out what works best for you.

Good luck.

I always lift way more in the gym then at a meet. I guess its just cause iam in my element. Its the only thing i can think of. Plus i dont lift at 10 am i train at 5 pm. I feel better in the afternoon. But i have PR'd quite a few times in meets. But overall more in the gym.

I pretty much agree with everything PLJay says. Always go for PR's on third attempts. Or, if it has been a long time between meets, second attempts. First attempt should be so easy it automatically gets you on the board.

I always lift better at meets.
