Gym Etiquette - When to back off?

Gym Etiquette: Thoughts, advise, suggestions on...

How to tell a trainer at the gym to back off? He's called a 'floor trainer' meaning he is not certified as a personal trainer. The advise he's giving isn't even GOOD advise and it totally goes against things I've been taught/researched/learned.

I want to be polite. Wearing headphones hasn't done the trick so far.

How ripped is he? Listen a little, tell him you will dicuss why you are doing what you are AFTER your workout. Tell him please not to bother you when you are working and if he doesn't back off then tell management. But do listen a little....he might have some good tips and if not he may be able to learn from YOU...at least your approach to lifting and why you are doing it.

How ripped is he? He's not. He's squishy (I know because he works out in a wifebeater... ugh)

He is very opinionated and doesn't think women should lift anything other than the pink five-pounders........

Okay, I'm sure that was a bit extreme, but I have already tried to listen a little. I definitely have a lot to learn, but I trust the trainer I've worked with at this gym in the past. And I still think it's rude to interrupt in the middle of a set.

To follow up w/more info: he wants to me follow the 'circuit' in the gym, using all of the precor machines. One set to warm up, the second set to failure. I know he's watching because I recently starting working calves and abs more. His thought is that calves and abs should not be worked more than once/week. He doesn't think women should drop-set or super-set. Also, cardio should always be done before lifting.... etc etc. It's not like he is correcting my form or suggesting/demonstrating new exercises... that information I would WELCOME *any*time*.

LMFAO

Like that could possibly matter less.

lol

Tell him that if you want advice - that you will ask for it.

If it continues - tell the gym manager as it is likely a recurring problem - and not just with you.

Tell him if you want his opinion - you'll beat it out of him.....LOL j/k but something along those lines.....

And I agree - say something to mgmt. if he continues....

Next time he interrupts dramatically point your finger to the other end of the gym and say "back to the shed with you!" Laugh then walk away :)

I know how you want to go off. I had to do that and my old neighbor (he's a trainer at my old gym) ... he hasn't spoken to me or made eye contact since.

I snapped back once & looked like the bad guy, he called me out in the weight room with SO many people around and made me feel really stupid. It really hurt my feelings and I was embarassed. That's why I say let your progress speak for you. I also did in 12 weeks but he told me I couldn't do in less than a year.

God I'm not sure what I'd do. I tend to shoot newbie trainers a comment about how I"ve probably been training longer than they've been on the planet, but that doesn't really accomplish anything. I'd seriously say - "Well depens on your goals. My goals require that I lift like a mutherfucker."

Thanks everyone. :)

Shadow's suggestion it is!

Mr-Know-It-All will be at the gym tonight. I am working shoulders and triceps and abs. I'll letcha know how it goes. If it doesn't go well, I will be tempted to throw one of those pink-five-pounders in the direction of his head though.... :verygood:

agreed with the ladies agreeing with S.

Shoulders?! Purrfect .. make sure to do lat raises when telling him and maybe one can go flying in his direction ... :verygood:

I was thinking tricep kickbacks ... and letting one fly! :FRlol:

Also- Since I've lost quite a bit since my surgery, I've started doing shrugs again, light weight, higher reps. He thinks shrugs are a male-only exercise.

This is a likely cause of it.

Shadow said it best just lay it out there that you don't want his advice, but do it politely so he doesn't get all hurt over it.

If that doesn't work throw a dumbell at his head, glare at him, then start howling like an angry monkey. He'll probably get the point then. ;)

This is where being a big tattooed powerlifter is nice, I just glare at people bugging me and they go away.

i see this alot- guys giving women advice becuase they think we dont know how to train... I think you should tell him that your 250lb bodybuilder boyfriend doesnt like it when floor trainers talk to you & tends to get pretty angry about it... that should shut him up..lol

Youch. Hey Mr. Diplomatic, easy there.

What can I say??

I get tired of folks associating appearance with worth.

Surely you do not disagree.

AGreed with Shadow, of course.

Tell him thank you, but you have everything under control. When you need help, you will come find him. If he continues, then say it again, a little harsher. If it continues again, tell the manager.

And whether or not he is ripped does not mean his advice is any more or less helpful. There are many people who are not "ripped" who know a helluva lot more than any "ripped" huge bodybuilder. Muscles do not equal knowledge, likewise, lack of muscles does not equal lack of knowledge. It is stupid to assume otherwise.

Just tell him "buddy your way works for you and my way works for me...thanks but no thanks"

what you describe is border line harassment...especially in the middle of a freakin set or even while resting between sets

You could also freak him out by saying "You're not stalking me are you?" LOL

You would be amazed what men do at the gym to get chicks attention I had a guy touch my delts mid rep on shoulder presses last year when i was getting comp ready, It took everything in my power not to smash him in the head with a dumbbell. I try to look as angry as possilbe when lifting I wont take my head set off for anything. Even friends I know at the gym I wont talk to them until I am done lifting I require that kind of focus for the best workouts.

It is sad that women can't just act normal in the gym.

Guys want to be left alone during their workout then they have the balls to go chat up a girl when she's trying to get hers on.

You can tell the girls who want to be left alone too.

What ass would try to talk to a girl who has her head set on, looking all focussed and serious, not smiling or making eye contact, using great form and lifting heavy?

Day before yesterday, a really swole guy asked me to spot him. :D lol I looked behind me to make sure he wasn't talkimng to someone else. There were dozens of guys he could have asked.

So - I spotted him. He was pushing 120 db's.

Ha....

See... I need one of those. This is when you start to miss the benefits of a boyfriend who is a 6'4 260-pound Linebacker.

And - Being a big tattooed chick should count for something!!

Whatever this 'trainers' intentions were, I gave him the 'thanks but no thanks' last night.

More irritating that this guy is anyone who interrupts me during a HIIT session, or any kind of cardio. I don't enjoy cardio to begin with. But I'm working so hard I can barely see straight, let alone carry on a conversation.... Top that off with the fact that sometimes even I *know* I'm sweaty and smelly .... at times so horribly that it's embarrassing!! I guess there are more asses out there than we realize!! :) It will be interesting to see what happens when I move off the east coast... If there is any change in attitude, etiquette, behaviors.

Tuesday night: About halfway through my workout he came up and mouthed something. I pointed to my headphones and he hovered... So I took them off and gave an exasperated "WHAT?!"

He asked if he could 'make a suggestion' .... I just smiled, shook my head no and said "I'm good - thanks".

I went for cardio only last night (and I was with a friend - male & overweight if that matters any). Mr Floor Trainer didn't have any suggestions for me, but the cardio machines are lofted above everything else in the gym and trainers don't tend to 'hang out' in that area.... so we'll see. Thanks again!

I was going to suggest the mp3/walkman route. Worked for HT and Elana who got hit on by trainers constantly. Just keep the music on and ignore them. Give a dirty look and they will walk.

Does he do this to everyone? Do you see him "helping" others?

This guy was pretty persistent ... I originally posted because the iPod didn't deter him. He's a new employee, and he just over-did it with me. To top it all off: His 'women-life-the-pink-five-pounders' attitude really rubbed me the wrong way.

Thanks :)

I know... I really wanted to tell him to back off but ended up being pretty polite about it. (I'm proud of me, actually!)

Subtle hints didn't work with this dude. And I've noticed that he 'helps' women, mostly.

WoNderWoMan25 said:

Jackass. Dude is so trying to put his moves on the ladies.

If he keeps doing it to you, I really would say something to the manager - you don't have to be irate and ranting. Just a simple stop by and say "I just wanted to let you know that one of your employees seems to be irritating some of the women here, you might want to talk to him."

Also, this is the MAIN reason I love my new gym. It is a small-ish place that just has equipment, restrooms, and NO STAFF. It is open 24 hours a day with member keycard access. We have basic, simple stuff ...... cardio equipment, selectorized machines, plate-loaded Hammer stuff, free weights, Smith and squat racks, one cable cross (multi-station one). The most people I have seen in there was last night - and there was me and TWELVE other people. That is it - at 7:30pm. LOVE IT.

Can I ask one question though - if a girl is wearing Bebe sprot clothing to the gym she wants to be hit on, or at least looked at right? I try to stay as far away from the ladies in the gym as possible as I don't want to get my chalk or sweat on them, but I always wonder. If I hang one of my balls out of my shorts or scream bloody murder while squatting I'm pretty sure some would look. I hope so at least.

Just wondering.

Maybe the girl in the Bebe with the perfect make-up and hair who doesn't sweat, is always chewing gum AND can't stay away from the mirror... maybe... ;) :qt:

That is part of the problem w/my gym. It is one of three locations. I happen to live down the street from the location with the older crowd - Their niche is the slightly overweight 40-something year old who will gobble up the personal training. There aren't many younger girls there .... So Mr-Floor-Trianer is paying close attention to the few of us that are there. Anyway, their aren't many regulars, and it is quiet, especially after 6 PM (5-15 people tops).

Austin.....

I think its just poor form if the guy can't catch a hint. It is common that people will "give advice" in teh gym - its basically a floor show because you're there looking at other people while they look at you and you just notice things. But if the guy just doesn't lay off I would totally talk to management. If you feel like getting into the discussion you can ask him why he thinks the pink weights are so great if your goal is hypertrophy. If you don't feel like having the conversation then a simple "I'm doign fine thanks", hat down, ipod on, squat. If he still doesnt' catch a hint, drop the squat bar on him.

I won't have to worry about this problem anymore. I'm leaving this gym effective TODAY.

Without talking to the members, they got rid of both squat racks & not that I'm lugging the 100's around, but they also ditched all dumbbells over 60 pounds.

HOW THE FRIG DO YOU DO THIS??? NEW GYM RULES - YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO USE THE SMITH MACHINE OR THE PRECOR SUPER SQUAT MACHINE? WTF? AFTER 10 MINUTES I REALIZED I WASN'T GETTING ANYWHERE AND GAVE UP EVEN TRYING TO TALK TO THE OWNER...

I guess this 'No Grunting' rule is new to the gym... I've worked out there before when I lived closer. Lot of the gyms around here are catering to the older outta shape clientele who will buy the personal training packages, while trying to push out the heavy lifters. Anyway - They both over-reacted. She called the cops, but not after he grunted... After he freaked out on her for asking him not to grunt. From what I hear, he is known to be a juice-head with a temper/short fuse, so he gave her hell and I'm sure she got pretty frightened and intimidated... The confrontation was long over when the police responded and finally got to the gym which added to the entire ordeal.

I would but then I can get quite vengeful, not my best side...

and I'm gonna grunt tonight at the gym, just for grins. they can either have that or me singing out loud to my music. :p

Grunting should be taken in context:

A man grunting while curling stainless steel dbs = ANNOYING

Unless you're in some hardcore PL gym where its a group grunt, I don't think its acceptable. At least not the silly type of constant, blatant, obviously attention-begging grunt...

Personally I probably would've asked the guy if he needed a change of underwear instead of calling the cops.

I consider that it is correct that your trainer demands from you certain efforts.... It is his work, besides many are lazy and do not carry out many exercises at the full capacity though for achievement of success it is necessary. But if he overdid it with attention to you, then tell him that you've already experienced enough and if you will need help, you will turn.
