Good luck to all at the St. Louis Meet

No more helping for me....ever, ever...from now on I'm competing. It's soooooooooo much easier.:lmao:

Everyone did very well...I'll let them post thier results.

I had a plan going into the meet, and I made it a point to stick to it. I wanted a 955 total, as that would put me in as a class 4 powerlifter. It's basically the bottom rung on the chart, but I felt like that would put me on the map.

To do that, I needed:

325 Squat, which I had never attempted
225 Bench, which I bombed on at the last meet
405 Deadlift, also never attempted

I started warming up for squat, and worked up to 225lbs for a warmup. Only problem was, I almost fell over at 225, which scared the hell out of me. I thought, very briefly, about lowering my opener at the last minute, then decided I wasn't going to let this mess with me.

I hit my opener of 275, no problem, the same with 300. 325 was interesting to say the least. I have a tendency to go forward on squats, and as I hit the bottom of my squat, I started to go a little too far forward, and heard someone in the crowd say "ooooh". But, all those good mornings paid off, and I got myself back upright, and squatted the weight. My previous record was 285.

Bench, I opened raw at 175. I had a problem last time keeping my butt on the bench, so I wanted to open low with something I could do without the shirt. I nailed 175 no problem. My next jump was 225 shirted. I nailed 225 easily, but forgot to wait for the rack command, and missed the attempt. My original plan was to go for 230 or 240 on my 3rd attempt, but I didn't want to jeopordize my 3 lift goal with a potential miss, so I stayed safe at 225, and nailed it no problem.

By the time deadlifts rolled around, I was a little tired and hungry, but I knew the hardest part was over. I nailed 350 and 375 easily, but was warned about dropping the bar instead of setting it down on my 2nd attempt. They loaded 405, and I looked around at spatts, Hannibal, and Clint. I know everyone was cheering me on, but I didn't catch much of what was said. I grabbed the bar, dropped as low as I could, and hauled the weight up. I struggled, but kept the bar moving, locked it out, and made it a point to almost carefully set it down.

There was only one other lifter in the 198 class, and he bombed on his bench. I knew his lifts were going to be MUCH better than mine, but I didn't like winning by attrition.

Anyway, I got the 1st place trophy, (1 of 1) :D and am now the record holder for the state of Missouri, however briefly. Most importantly, I set PR's on all my lifts, and went 8 or 9 on my attempts. It was a hell of a lot of fun.

A big thanks to spatts, the Springfield crew, and especially Hannibal. He handled all my meet prep for me, let me bitch at him all day long, and spotted my squat for me. If he had not gotten my back on squat, someone else probably would've pulled the squat, and I wouldn't have gotten 325.

Videos are coming...my hard drive decided to die while I was gone.

st louis contest

I didnt stay for the pl contest, but here is what Mrs.Wessels wrote about the strongman contest
"The weather was cold, snowy and rainy. Since it was an indoor venue, the weather was of no concern. The spectators packed the house all day. There were 23 strongman and 26 power lifters. Thanks to all of the staff, judges, spotters, and loaders. They all did a wonderful job of keeping the meet running smoothly. The competition in all three-weight classes was very close. There was a three-way tie for first place in the heavyweight division. We had to go to tie breakers to get a winner. Due to time restraints, the fifth and final event (stones) had to be dropped. Three of the five events for the day were max events, which takes a lot of time. This is a hint to future promoters in keeping your max events limited to one in a contest. The top two finishers in all but the heavy weight division qualified for open Nationals October 3rd and 4th in Myrtle Beach, SC. Since there was a three-way tie in the heavyweight division, all three guys are qualified for nationals. Tom Mitchell qualified for Master’s, Teen, and Women Nationals August 2nd in Columbus, OH. In the Teen Division, Aaron Snider 1st. Master’s Division, Tom Mitchell 1st place. In the Lightweight Division, Carlos Soto 3rd, Tony Soucie 2nd, and Joey Simpson 1st. In the Middleweight Division, Ben Moore 3rd, Mike Zimmerman 2nd, and Mike Johnston 1st. In the Heavyweight Division, Ryan Brown 1st, Mike Wortham 2nd, and Jason Davidson 3rd. There were also four NASS National records broken; Ryan Brown has the new record in the Farmer’s hold with 300lbs at 49 seconds, in the lightweight division, Joey Simpson with 250 lbs at 50.44 seconds. On the Max Standard Dead lift, Carlos Sotos has the new record for the lightweights (he would be more than happy to tell you about it) with 640lbs. Several guys broke the heavyweight record with 680lbs. They are Mike Johnston, Jason Davidson, Ryan Brown, Mike Wortham, and Brent Adams. "

also... a few guys attempted a 705 deadlift, and 350lb overhead press!!Most just barely missed the lifts.I hope that the full event results will be posted, and am guessing that we will find out that a few other NASS records were set.I met Spatts, and shes pretty cool(and pretty :) )...also got to hang with Bfold and Neffi for a while.I wish I could have stayed for the pl competition, but it was probably best that I didnt, since we were met with some bad snow on the way home

Not such a great meet for me. 750 squat opener was easy. I jumped to 820 and missed twice in a row. I was told by everyone I went way deep, as I tend to do. This pisses me off because I'm stronger than my last meet and squatted 50lbs. less. Out of this I learned that the most important thing about my squat is learning to squat to the right depth.

Bench was awesome. I opened at 535 then went to 565. Both were easy, so I went to 600. This was super easy as well. I know I had way more in me. Matt told me to take 600 on my second, but I was unsure about how much squatting would tire me out and the pause. I should have listened to him.

I opened my dead at 675. I jumped to 735 and missed at the top. I tried again on my third with the same result. This sucked ass. I just don't have the lock out strength right now.

So I totaled 2025 and went 5 for 9. Pretty poor but I learned a lot. I know the crappy things at this meet will help me with my training. I'll post later on my thoughts about my training and what worked and what didn't and how I plan on changing my training for the next meet.

Huge thanks to Hannibal for helping all of us at the meet.

hey project...what missouri records do you hold? Is it with some lifting affiliation? fill me in man. Good job by the way and avatar is nice too.

I just wanted to say that I had a lot of fun before, during, and after the meet with everyone. Everyone did awesome. Special thanks to everyone, but ESPECIALLY to Hannibal and Corey with the help of lifting order and knee wrapping. You guys helped a ton.

Congratulations to everyone at the meet. I helped some of you guys with knee wraps and just got into powerlifting about a month ago. The meet was an unbelievable experience for me to see what it's all about. I just wanted to say congratulations again and it was good to meet you guys.
