hey babyface, i'm in rio de janeiro right now and have been for 4 months i have come before for 3 months so i have trained with the best in a place where there are jiujitsu schools all over, i am looking at the pedro carvalho tape series on bjj 1-8, i mean they are still on my shelf i don't use them anymore, i think they were useful to some extent, the best book out , and it just came out, is by renzo gracie and royler gracie, it absolutely beats em all hands down, terrific.
BUT i have found that with a few minor exceptions i forget everything on the tapes unless i do at least 100 reps or so: in rio right now i take private classes because they are really cheap and you get it from great black belts some of whom speak english, i speak decent portuguese, i never, never forget what i learn in private classes and i think they are a great way to get some of the basics.
take some private classes when you are starting out, even from a purple belt, get a deal on a package. good luck
