Gonna try out for football. What position should I play?(stats inside)

Wassup. I`m gonna be a sophmore in high school this year, and I plan on trying out for football for the first time. I`m fairly new to the sport, been doin research on the sport, but don`t know what position I wanna play. I`m sort of leaning toward Linebacker.

These are my stats.

5`7
185lbs
14% bodyfat
Got real good agility
I wressled last year at heavywieght(275), so I know how to take mofo`s down
I run the 40 in 4.9 seconds or somethin like that.

Max bench=225
Max squat=410
Max deadlift=400

Pretty damn powerful also

well at that size, i say lb is a ways away. I think somewhere in the secondary looks like the most likely position. Drink some milk, get some height.

the only position coach would let me play was left-out.

Fullback

You sound like a fullback to me bro (that's what I play/played)

These should be your goals:

Junior Year:

Height: you have no control over it, so don't worry about it. Just keep good posture.

Weight: 200+ @ 14% b/f or less (this should not be very difficult to do in a year)

40 yard: 4.6-4.7
also concentrate on vertical jump, and all your agility.

Senior year:

weight: 225lbs + (Most will disagree, but I say you should save some money and get on a kick ass cycle the off-season before senior year. Bulk up in the winter, and bust your ass running in the summer)

40 yard: 4.6 ( It will be hard to put on 25lbs and still gain speed, but it can be done)

It sounds like your lifts are looking pretty good for your age, keep at that. Make sure you do hang cleans and every leg exercise you can do. It's all about the legs in college ball.

I know this is a lot to take in, but if you can get these stats in high school, there's no reason why you shouldn't get a scholarship to college. (Granted that your not a pussy)

And my last piece of advice............Hate the world, use all of the poeple that doubt you to fuel your desire.

damn I wish I was in your shoes again. My biggest regret in high school was not concentrating on my explosiveness. Other than that, I went balls out and there's no way I can look back and wish I had worked harder, and that's a pretty damn good feeling.

If you want to, PM me. I love talkin football. (Played 1 yr in college so far, and I have to sit out this next season)

YOU ARE A BIT LIGHT FOR LB. BUT THAT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL YOU GO TO. I WENT TO A MOSLY BLACK SCHOOL THAT WAS PACKED WITH ATHLETES SO I DIDNT WORRY ABOUT FOOTBALL. I PLAYED BASEBALL WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN PLAYING ALL MY LIFE.

IF YOU GO TO A SCHOOL WHERE THE ATHLETIC PROWESS ISNT ALL THAT PROMINANT, THEN LB IS GOOD AT YOUR SIZE.

RB IS ALSO AN OPTION IF YOUR SCHOOL ISNT FULL OF PEOPLE WHO RUN 4.5'S ALL DAY LONG. 4.9 IS KINDA SLOW BUT LIKE I SAID, IT DEPENDS ON YOUR SCHOOL.

IF YOUR COACH IS A GOOD COACH, TALK TO HIM ABOUT YOUR SITUATION AND HE WILL HELP YOU. HE WILL PUT YOU WHERE HE CAN COACH YOU TO GET THE MOST BENEFIT OUT OF YOU AND FOR THE TEAM.

Size and speed and strength dont mean shit if you dont have the intensity and aggression needed to play defensive line, or linebacker.

STUDJC
I COULDNT AGREE MORE.

SS or WS

Evloks,

Though you could definitely end up playing fullback at your strength, you would need to develop a little more size...but I imagine since the season is less than two months away, you need to chose a position that you can play at your size now...which is why I suggest Strong or Weak Safety. Probably Strong Safety would be a better choice since you will get to use that strength of yours up at the line. Now some might say you aren't fast enough-but since you probably haven't done a lot of speed training, within a few weeks of practice you could probably drop 2 tenths of a second off your forty time and more importantly develop those slow twitch muscle fibers in those hammys and calves which is all important in a safety blitz package or Cover 2 defense. Height really isn't important as long you can cover ground quickly at the point of attack and since most of the passes in the flat are going to be low anyway...speed and power are more important than size and strength. So by the time you graduate you can probably get up naturally to 210, 220 and still get a lot of valuable PT

i'd say it all depends on your high school... lets not forget this is likely his JV team.. a 187 pound LB on jv isnt that bad... he is in tenth grade, thats a decent sized 10th grader so linebacker would be fine... so would fullback... or safety..

take your ass to the track every day and do sprints... just get the wind and maybe a little speed... do agility work, do whatever you can now... BEFORE 2 a days begin... play full back AND linebacker... be a stud when you get on varsity...

but one thing.. HAVE FUN!!! its high school football, you will love looking back on it but you should love doing it too.

Oh yeah...

Madbomber is right on with that, whatever you do, have fun and don't get down when some 6' 4'' 300lb pudge ball OT (no offense to all those pudge ball OT on the boards :)) tell you that you are too small.

Later,
Snooker

what is the size of your school?

i know illinois basketball has class A and class AA...but i think football may go up to class 5A. lockport sounds like a small town?

I think Lockport ia a double a school. Yeah Lockport is a town, but not all that small. Like a mix between a town and a city.

Well, you're clearly not big enough yet to play O or D line (not that you would want to), so that narrows it down a little.

First question, do you want to risk getting hit alot (maybe hurt) for the glory of making touchdowns? if yes then keep Offense an option, if not.... stick to defense.

Second question, do you like to hit people? And give up 'some' of the possible touchdown glory for making the 'Big Hit', if so, then defense is for you.

For your age, you are probably average for linebacker or running back size, and both are a lot of fun! Work on your speed and quickness... and the size will come.

i would suggest full back also, they put my ass on special teams when i played two years ago, mainly cuz i was 135 and only 5'6 now we have football back and im 166 @5'7 maybe they will let me play

If you want to play ANYWHERE OTHER THAN the LINE you better get a decent time in the 40. 4.9, FUCK I can run that backwards now!

Try Fullback, it's your best shot. You are too slow right now for linebacker.

There are way too many factors in deciding what position is right for you. If you go to a decent high school, the coaching staff has a good knowledge of the game and you are a good enough athlete (I imagine you have something going for you if you wrestle heavywieght @ 185lbs), then the coaches will find a way to put you on the field. You just have to go out and prove yourself (rememeber there is always competition, but your goal is to be on the field, period). I played through college on the DL (played ILB in High School), and if I have any advice to give is that speed and footwork are extremely important (explosion is key-do a lot of power cleans and plylometrics). If you venture into Gear, do it in the off season, take some time, then start again right before the season and carry it through (this will keep you in peak condition while you play). A lot of rambling, but I've been there and if I can help in any way, drop me a line.

did anyone else catch that 275 last year, 185 this year. was that a typo?

Was wondering about that myself.

I also can't believe no one said anything about advising the kid to take a "kick ass cycle" between his jr and sr year.

Anyway play end, guar, and tackle. Sit at the end of the bench....guard the water.... and tackle anyone that tries to get it.

If your coach is worth a fuck he will know where you should play.

Is a 4.9 40yd dash really that bad at the sophmore(10th) level? I didn`t think it was all that bad considering that last year when I was a freshman only 3 freshman guys that were on the track team could beat me in a 100m dash.

I decided to to out for Offensive Line. Are there any former high school or college football players that can give me any tips on how to play this position?

Dude you got to get your 40 time faster

As a soph in Highschool I ran a 4.7 and I was a Cross Country/Track runner

but then again I was strange for a distance runner....only 2 other guys I ran with could run sub 23's in the 200 and edge me out

In. H.S. I was running 4.7's at your age....

Evolks, let me put it to you this way... I'm 40 and I can still burn out a 4.7-8 if I want to. I ran a 4.56 once my soph year in college @ 257 pounds. 1/10 of a second is forever in the hot zone.

are you out of your mind

185 lbs full

no way

i was 6 250
ran a 4.7
and i played fullback

sorry bro but i really have to disagree on this one

Depends on your state, school, heart...

For a decent team in New Orleans, you would either have to gain about 25lbs and run around a 4.8 or stay around 190 at 4.5

I have seen some great HS LB at sub-200lb, but your as better be cock strong and be able to fly.

I started at RB for 3 years and I was 185lb and ran a 4.52.... That is not considered that fast for a RB in New Orleans...

One Name...Zack Thomas.

That bitch hits like a train....he' listed as 5'11 235. No way in hell....he's more like 5'9 220 at the most. He truly is the big dawg out there you know where is is on the field when u play and the coaches spen much time on him in film......Never under estimate heart....it may be the last mistake u make!

Think about what position you'd like to play as well, and consider what the coaches are looking for. My cousin played football for his highschool, his first year and last on the team was when he was a senior. He got cut from varsity b/c the coach didn't like the fact that he caught the ball in the body.

You got some kick ass stats for a sophmore. Any power position would suit you well.

Sounds like you have some power in you legs for your age. If you run a tandom backfield I would try out for fullback! If you run a single backfield you may want to move to defense and go for outside linebacker!

If you can increase you speed just a couple tenths of a second I would surely go for the glory of Running back.

Evolks, I am an offensive tackle at the div 1 level for a top div 1 school. Ill tell u this u ned to enjoy the position and take pride in what your offense does because without an O line the team goes no where. When my back rushes for 200 yds, our unit takes pride in it. I am going into my senior year 2 nd yr starter and trying to make the last go around a good one. Also work out and get strong because in the trenches strength is a key and being a hardass is required as well. I am 6'5" 305 so that helps to. All i have to say is enjoy the sport it is a fun one. By the way i start camp this week, that is not fun. Take Care.

Thanks for all the input. Guess speed is somethin I`m gonna have to really work on this year. :rolly:

Today we had our scrimmage game!!! I had to play linebacker instead of o-line though. I got like 3 tackles and almost got a sac!! I`m happy with that.

DIDNT YOU POST THIS TWO WEEKS AGO? ANYWAY, HOW DID YOU GO FROM 275 LAST YEAR TO 185 THIS YEAR???

yeah...that.
Oh and,
I also can't believe no one said anything about advising the kid to take a "kick ass cycle" between his jr and sr year.

Yeah...do this if you don't want to get any taller. Come on guys anyone who can read and wants to do the research, knows that it would be wise to wait until around age 19 or 20 (or later), to start cycling. Maybe some of you here didn't do that, and you think that's ok. All I'm saying is read about the drugs and how they react chemically to every aspect of the body...blah, blah, blah. I'd get as big as you can naturally, and take advantage of your already high natural Testosterone and GH production before you think of cycling.
Unless this is all too late anyway! Which may explain going from 275 to 185. High androgenic drugs then maybe taking a year off from the gym...it could happen.
How did that happen?

FOOTBALL SEASON UPDATE( For those who care)

My sophmore high school season is just about over with. I want to tell everybody about how my first football has went so far.

Week 1: I start out at O- line. 3 days later, I get switched to d line.

Week 2: Still praticing d-line

Week 3: I get switched to linebacker. We had our first game this week. I didn`t get 1 play in .

Week 4: Still playing linebacker. I get 4 or 5 plays in the game.

Week 5: Still playing linebacker. Our third game. I make the special team(kick-off return)

Week 6: Our 4th game I get switched to d-line cause I couldn`t read the plays fast enough. I only got in the game on special teams.

Week 7: Our 5th game. I get some recognition at d-line. I played half of a quarter on game day.

Week 8: Our 6th game. I get more recognition. I played the whole game because our rush didn`t show up at the game.

Week 9: Our 7th game. Everything started coming together here. I make some big plays in practice. I didn`t get in the game though. The game was too close.

Week 10: Our 8th game. Things come together even more! 6:00mins into the 3rd Quarter, the coach puts me in at nose tackle. I get 2 tackles and a sac. Coach lets me finish out the game.

THEN COMES WEEK 11!!!!: OUR LAST SOPHMORE GAME OF THE YEAR IS THIS WEEK!!! The coaches are lookin at me real close cause of my progress. I get called back to the O-line cause they needed an extra right tackle to rotate for the game.(So I`ll be rotating with the O-line and the d-line) The O-line coach decides he wants to try me out at right tackle. He tells me what to do on all the plays and how to run the traps ect. Anyways, he sees the good job I`m doin so he decides he wants me to start at right tackle.(go figure) Meanwhile, I also have to get some rotation in at d-line. the d-line coach decides to give me a starting position at right defensive tackle. I also get put on the special teams( punt team, and kickoff team) Not only that, but I was named team captain!!! OH HELL YEAH!!!

October 20 is the last sophmore game. I am amped up 4 this one. At the begining of the the season, I never thought I`d get as good as I am now.(considering I didn`t play football my freshman year)
I never thought I`d be a starter on the O-line and the D-line

A toast to myself on my progress this football season.  The only thing I regret is not trying out for football my freshman year.

dude play strong safety.... i did its a blast

you got the speed tp be a DB in high school too, and your size seems good, youd be a monster DB compared to some of them high schoolers

i'm tellin you you will get no more open shots to kill people than you will in the secondary, db's are head hunters

one more thing, take it for what its worth...... enjoy it now and play your hardest....... you have no idea what it feels like to walk off the field the last game of senior year, knowing you will never play again.. i still wish i could go back for one for quarter, i'd give anything
