Generation Iron - Pumping Iron film remake - will they deny the steroids & drugs?

I just got back from the Olympia where they debuted the following trailer from the upcoming Pumping Iron remake Generation Iron. The film appears that it will follow Kai Greene and Phil Heath on the road to the Olympia. But, will Generation Iron own up to the extensive drug use involved in building these physiques? Will they show the anabolic steroids, insulin, HGH, and all the rest? Or will Generation Iron punt? What do you think?

The closest they came in the original was when Lou was shaking his pill bottles around. Maybe it was aspirin.

Looks interesting but no way can it compare to PI. That was so well done, it had drama . it came along at a time when bodybilding was getting more interest and it sparked interest to those with whom never really saw it in that light before. It aslo had a very charismatic star. What does this one have? A bunch of guys (spouting cliche's) who all look the same and have no appeal to anyone other than people who follow bodybuilding contests -- which isn't even most bodybuilders.

if they do its gonna be end of the world... EVERYBODY WILL BE ON THE JUICE! EVERY SICK CUNT OUT THERE!

I seriously doubt that. I don't think anyone who is unfamiliar with steroids will suddenly be attracted to them because of what these guys look like.

And as a side note -- show most women pictures of Arnold or Zane or Reeves or Scott or Robinson and their eyes will light up. Show the same women pics of Health and Cutler and Martinez and their reaction is "Ewww!"

if people really believe that steroids will make them look like that they will be severely dissapointed when they try them.

we've got plenty of examples on this forum of newbs juicing who look worse after or who quit on the lifestyle after a couple runs. unfortunately most guys fail at this game. its just like any hobby out there that people try and then quit on when they figure out they aren't going anywhere and are just wasting money for no reason. gym statistics tell the tale. rarely do gyms increase membership year over year. many sign up then quit, thats why gyms are so anal about having you sign contracts. they know that there is a strong chance you will quit

i see plenty of newbs every January in the gym. 3 weeks later they are gone and we are back to the normal regulars. in fact the #1 problem credit cards have (aside from fraud of course) is people calling in to dispute gym membership billing

Agree with Steve ,Happens every Year, Two Yrs ago these 3 young ladies about 35 yrs old came into the gym, had the owner to give them a tour, showed them demonstrations on how all the machines worked, and basis free exercises, the next day i almost dropped the bumbells on my foot, There they were "EXCEPT" They had went out and bought these colorful design sweatsuits,Each one a Different color With Stripes to set them off< WAIT! They even went the whole 9 yards by purchasing Tennis shoes to boot! They went to training so gung ho, i guess they were sore the next day,as i never saw them again.

Looks easy on TV loloolol!

I love documentaries like this ect... I agree with nelson that you cant top the origional. That was at a different time entirely when the sport was in a different place.

I agree with steve also that if these idiots glamourize AAS that every shit hat ass bag around is going to think its a good idea. We do NOT need that. For that reason I think they will mention it but go into no detail.

I for one...as I'm sure many of you would love to watch Phil, Kai, Jay, ect from the first alarm clock to bed time. Every slin shot, gh pin, oral, supp, ect...all day.

Never happen

yeah this one could be a bunch of bs advertisements for crappy products they are being paid to pitch. and the youngsters will fall for it.

Im sure its not going to be anything special..Im not excited about this movie, yall are gonna be disappointed..

Pain and gain is gonna be much better, and by the looks of it, the rock is on some serious anabloics in that movie.

We all know it, this video will never be able to compare with Pumping iron. That aint saying, its not going to be a great documentary. Like all other things in life, in every genre, every situation, birthday, wedding theres a life highlight.

A certain situtaion that will out beat every other, that cake you´ll never taste again, that damn hot lady from the holidays you f....

Pumping iron is like that, it was made when the bodybuilding era blossomed and Arnold the upcomming bodybuilding moviestar. People where amazed by the sport of bodybuilding and what it could do. The fysike had alot more difference in appeal then the ones we see today, they all kinda look the same. <- thats my oppinion

I cant wait to see this one, its a new generation, new bodybuilders, and kinda a new sport now adays. Ill still have high expectations.

I don't see why this film would get so much criticism! If you are on this forum chances are you have used or are considering using. Everyone should be able to appreciate what these top elite athletes go through, whether or not you like their physique or not. I actually think its going to top Pumping Iron just for the simple fact that more bodybuilders can relate with these guys instead of the old school approach.

Going into detail about drug and ancillary use would be real bad press for the sport. It would be like following a rookie linebacker around through the offseason while he trys to get better and comes into camp 20 lean pounds bigger and shredded. They will tell you how much he busted his balls for it but they'll leave out that one important detail about gaining that 20 lean pounds.

But without it, they don't have much of a story to tell. How much can they talk about training? How much trash talk about Beating the other guy down (by posing) is going to capture the audiences attention?

What people don;t realize about the original Pumping Iron, is that it was laid out like a screenplay. You had a antagonist and a hero. But in this case, the antagonist was the insecure one and the hero was somewhat villainous -- and interesting slant.

Then they had a few subplots --

Lou's relationship with an overbearing "stage " father.

Leraning the art of posing.

Even several little subplots such as the naive Mike Katz and the calculating Ken Waller. Franco, the devoted friend . Ed Corny -- the "old" guy. It was also an "American dream" story with foreigners being the ones who succeed.

They even had a third act surprise -- Serge Nubret showing up at the Olympia. It was a brilliantly constructed film.

Just by looking at this one, I get the feeling the producers are not thinking along those lines. This is a film for people who are already fans and just want to see the freaks. Personally, that gets old for me after about 10 minutes. But to each his own.

I have no doubt Nelson. I'm sure it will be a follow around documentary. I agree that the origional PI was geniously done. Lou's dad was such a dick head too. Maybe they will mention the AAS, GH and slin but I cant see them talking details and quantities. It just doesnt seem probable. I would love to see all the dirty shit but its just not gonna happen. Especially with Phil and Kai.
I watched "A Day In The Life" Kai Greene on youtube. It was pretty good for what it was. I have a feeling PI #2 will be the same exact thing.

if its anything like the Rock's other movies is gonna be low budget crap .. walking tall had a couple fun scenes to watch, but boy was it a bad movie lol

Awwww come on bro.....Faster was awsome. Right to the point, no bullshit with a .454 casull.

Fast 5 was great. Definatley not low budget there.

His stuff has gotten better as its gone along. Minus the disney type crap.

Def won't be like pumping iron but that isn't what they are going for. They are going for the whole human interest feel. It seems to me that it will be more like one of those "day in the life of" videos. I think it will help to bring a real human perspective to pro bodybuilders and their day to day lives. U will get to see these guys and how they think, live, and act. It will be cool to see the interactions and feelings each person has with their competition in comparison with the tight knit group of guys from the 70s-80s. I really dont think gear will be mentioned much at all. It looks to be put together well and I am excited to see it.

The premier of this film is September 20, 2013. I can't wait!<p> It's almost here! The film, <a href="http://bodybuilding.elitefitness.com/generation-iron/" target="_blank"><em>Generation Iron</em></a>, premiering September 20, 2013, follows the personal life of the current top-7 pro bodybuilders. The film is pretty much a sequel to the 1977 film <em>Pumping Iron</em> which told the story of the most famous rivalry in bodybuilding competition history. The rivalry was between Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Lou Ferrigno. The rivalry between the reigning Mr. Olympia, Phil Heath, and the first runner up at the 2012 Olympia, Kai Green, is the focus of <a href="http://bodybuilding.elitefitness.com/generation-iron/" target="_blank"><em>Generation Iron</em></a>– much like <em>Pumping Iron</em> focused on the rivalry between Schwarzeneggar and Ferrigno. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2012 Olympia and even more fortunate to have had Kai Greene as my personal trainer in the 1990s. So although Heath looked phenomenal, I was a little sad that Greene lost to Heath by only 1 vote – making the 2012 Olympia the closest one in history. </p><p>While the film is certain to be great entertainment, I wonder if the truth about the extensive anabolic steroid and other drug use that these pro bodybuilders go through will be highlighted, merely mentioned, or most likely, will it be ignored completely? Here's a link to read more about the new <a href="http://bodybuilding.elitefitness.com/generation-iron/" target="_blank">film Generation Iron and anabolic steroid use in the Mr. Olympia and in pro bodybuilding</a>.</p><p align="center"><a href="http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/anabolic-steroids/generation-iron-pumping-iron-film-remake-will-they-deny-steroids-drugs-998013.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.elitefitness.com/images/generation-iron-movie/generation-iron-film.jpg" width="400" height="602" alt="<em>Generation Iron</em> remake of <em>Pumping Iron</em> film" /></a></p>

It will be like what Jay Cutler said in "Bigger, Stronger, Faster." People know that steroids are in the sport of bodybuilding.. and to get to the top you do whatever you got to do to win.

I don't think anyone is going to be releasing their contest prep drug protocol and all that. We have Bostin Loyd for that.

Im waiting to watch this movie b cuz i watch all bodybuilding movies. It will be interesting to see how the sport has evolved since the time pumping iron came out. I read a review and someone commented and said that back then all the bodybuilders were a community and worked out together even tho they were competitors but now everyone is fragmented and isolated. The good thing is that the sport has become worldwide and so diverse. I dont believe they will devote a single minute to any aas discussion. They are illegal and taboo and thats all we need is some election year politician trying to make a name for themselves trying to demonize the sport and say the movie is glamourizing the use of illegal drugs. Im sure the movie is probly sponsored by supplement companies so you know they gonna try to make it appear that their supps are the reason they are so jacked....but as always i will watch with a discerning eye and dissect the fiction and hype from the truth and valuable info...hopefully lol

Pumping Iron was inspiring.. they showed guys lifting, eating, motivating.. Arnold even went to prison to talk to guys in there and they were intimidated etc.

i hope this movie doesn't send the wrong impression to all the young kids out there that you just need to inject some steroids and you are g2g because if you watch youtube thats what it looks like to me

Better that then getting them starry eyed about AAS. Theres enough idiots out there fucking up everything for us as it is.

Steroids are already illegal, cant really fuck it up more for us than it already is. I say keep it all illegal, bros like us will always "get ours" with no problem. Leaves more for us and less for the dumbasses who get starry eyed.

the thing is they are legal if you have a prescription for it.

and a lot of times you just need to find the right doctor.. lots of guys are on HRT who don't even need to be

its weird how you tell people this and they are surprised but then steroids are supposed to be very bad.. i ask these people if they are so dangerous how come docs write scripts for HRT then?

ill watch the movie but, I bet it will be like MD or flex but on tv.. in other words a bunch of advertisement, bs diets, and how supplements gave them 10 lbs this year lol..i doubt they will talk about the juice, if they do people are going to walk out the movie straight into the pharmacy..

People arent going to walk straight to any pharmacy even if roids are talked about lol
If that were the case people would walk out of the theater and straight to anything they saw in that movie. Like drugs, guns, fancy cars, whatever. But that doesnt happen

i believe this is a documentary which means its gonna be a bunch of opinions and should NOT push any point of view. they are supposed to lay out the facts and opinions on the table and let you the viewer decide.

we will see.. i will do the honors of letting you guys sample it before i waste my time going

i say illegal in the context of Schedule 3 narcotics, which roids are.

I'll see it; good or bad. I think we all should, because whatever is shown in the movie (TRUE OR FALSE), will be what everybody thinks about us (the bodybuilding community in general) , when we are in public. Too many people already think that we're all huge and jacked BECAUSE we have money and resources to get joose, and we use our butts as pincushions on a daily basis and never lift a weight at all. It's not a good thing when the public (ignorant of the sport altogether) doesn't give us any credit for the hard work at the gym. I hope the film changes that!!!!

By the same logic, I would think that people would believe that a Hyundai would be just as fast as a Lamborghini if it had $15/gallon racing fuel.

I really hope they keep AAS out of the movie or are at least very careful with the subject.

I would like to (and plan to) take my kids to the movie. The producers have a great opportunity to popularize bodybuilding and bring it more/back into the mainstream. I've watched Pumping Iron with my kids, but its a little old and boring for them.

Hopefully they don't mis the mark.

Has anyone seen the movie yet?

I'm thinking about taking the family tonight but I really want to know how the steroid subject is handled before I take the kids.

Hey guys. This question is for steve. Ive been reading on here for awhile and you guys sound like you know what your doing. Wanted to ask you y you think that most guys fail at this game. Just want your opinions.

I'm annoyed that this film, although it has EXCELLENT reviews, is only playing in remote areas of SoCal, and ONLY RUNS 'TIL NEXT FRIDAY BEFORE QUITTING. My wife and I are going to have to drive all the way to Ontario to see it later today; 100 miles each way :( . WTF??? Are they trying to ruin the ratings by making it impossible to go see?

It's in some mainstream theaters in Dallas.

Yes! It's at two good ones (the one on Webb Chapel and the new one up on Plano Pkwy- walking distance to our Dallas house). Bum luck; I'm in CA right now.

it costs money to show a movie and uses up space at a theater. they aren't gonna show a movie that they can't sell tickets to. this one is just a documentary and how often do you ever get documentaries shown in most theaters.. the answer is rarely. you are lucky they are even showing it within 100 miles of you and i will bet the theater will be less than half full when you go.

most theater goers are late teens, they aren't interested in something like this and frankly after reading the reviews so far i would hardly call this movie 'excellent' .. 67% rating its above average but far from a movie that will be winning any awards.. i will just wait till someone posts it on youtube in a couple months.

You have a point, but I heard that the theater I'm planning to go to today, was sold out Friday for all but the late show. I think this film is different from other documentaries because of all the media hype lately about AAS, and so many "heroes" getting busted, etc. People want to know what's up. What really doesn't make sense is that it's running at "A" theaters and not "B" theaters (usually where documentaries and low-$ films go).

When you consider some of the crap with terrible ratings and nearly vacant seats, which got into first-run theaters somehow and ran for months, this really is strange, IMHO.

Charles

^^^ yeah because it isn't shown in a lot of theaters i'm not surprised if they get a couple packed theaters for it. however its not exactly a movie that people will see over and over so once you see it once you won't be back. i'm not 100% sure how it works (so someone who works in the biz please correct me if i'm wrong) but i believe the distributor has to pay to show the movie, and documentaries do not have big budgets to exactly market or buy space.

this is why you see a lot of made for tv movies that go straight to tv and don't even get shown in theaters.. see lifetime and sci fi channel lol

anyway its not a conspiracy bro. its simple business and economics at work. you want to milk money from the theaters but you don't want to go overboard or you will end up losing money. those movies you are saying stay in the theater for a while its cause they have the budgets to afford to stay for a long time even without selling tickets. they have the luxury of also making money on DVD sales, pay per view, and then regular tv rights so when you are comparing something like this to a Jennifer Aniston chick flick or Adam Sandler comedy that is comparing apples to oranges.

This documentary has about as much mass appeal as a documentary on badminton

My wife and I made the 200-mile round trip to Ontario and went to see it last night, and I'm happy to report that they did an EXCELLENT job, IMHO, of giving us the credit we're due for all the work and dedication it takes to get where we are. The reference to AAS was short but concise, and very accurate. They made a STRONG point that you can't just order gear online and turn into the hulk. I hope that this will trickle down to the judgmental and ignorant public!!!! It's definitely not a blockbuster epic film, but it's worth seeing, but probably not necessary to see in the theater unless you want to say you did, which is why we went (in our matching Olympia 2013 shirts).

This documentary has about as much mass appeal as a documentary on badminton

I think this is it. The theater was not packed (I was mistaken about that theory), but it wasn't empty either. BUT: Everybody in there was obviously in the sport, or at least works out (or was with somebody who is). No "regular" families, and no typical groups of kids.

I guess Friday and Saturday were the only "packed nights, and I'll concede that you were 100% right about why it's only there a week. I wanted to think our sport would get more public attendance for that movie, but evidently not. I have to say that it says something about the moviegoing public, when a documentary can't sell to more than a handful of people, but a senseless film like Good Burger (1999ish) could stay around for months. I wouldn't even have given that one a 15-minute spot on Saturday morning kids' TV!

Charles

cool thanks for seeing it.. its not playing anywhere near me so I am just gonna wait till its out on youtube.. i'm sure it will be downloadable online on some pirate site.

but yeah as much as WE are into this sort of thing SD is right that the general public doesn't have any desire to see it.. I'm also into gardening but if a documentary came out on it i'm sure no one would see it

Did any other EF bros go to see it in Ontario (or anyplace)? I thought there were some members out in the 909, and other places way closer to Ontario than I am. And with so many others I saw who obviously lift, somebody there last night must be on this forum...

Where you been bro? Badminton is HUUUUUUGE now!! Pro badminton players get the hottest chicks. Everybody knows that.

I guess that's why all the new huge superstores are showing up everywhere specializing in badminton gear. There's a 150,000 sq. ft. warehouse downtown "Shuttlecocks R Us". :D

Seriously, it's a legit sport, but like storm chasing (YES that's a sport too), or bodybuilding, we don't hear much about it unless we're in it.

Charles

I took the family to see it last night. I enjoyed it and I think the family semi-enjoyed it.

I took them for 2 reasons:
1. If you want to see more movies like this produced, you need to financially support the effort. So I took the family on a 180 mile round trip.
2. I'm also taking them to the Olympia and I figured they would enjoy, understand and appreciate the Olympia and the contenders more after seeing the movie.

The movie was good, not great, but good. We'll all say that it could never be like Pumping Iron, largely because of our fondness for Arnold and Lou, but in many ways (other than characters) it was just as good.

I read one review where they commented on their (movie makers) missed opportunities to capitalize on and maintain momentum in the movie. Well, I kind of agree. At times the movie would speed up and develop some momentum and then stall, or at least slow down.

But it was enjoyable and there were many interesting parts. You got to see Branch in the old school Metroflex gym that Ronnie went to. You also got to see Ben P hooked up to some machines to monitor the effectiveness of his workouts.

There was also some goofy sh1t like seeing Kai pour supps/pills directly into his mouth from the bottle. Even my kids commented on that.

I haven't been a Phil Heath fan but I enjoyed his part in the movie. He was definitely this films version of Arnold (cocky, developed, talented, confident, and even charismatic). He's at the top for a reason (just my opinion). By the way, I'm a Jay Cutler fan.

Kai seemed a little weird. I'm glad they left out the grapefruit.

can't really find anywhere where this is playing

Lou is an asshole. He's a cocky prick who wont give you a minute or a picture without getting paid for it...I've met MANY athletes, bodybuilders, fighters, and none evern close to Lou in terms of thinking he's the shit....

can't really find anywhere where this is playing

Looks like it's been carried over for more locations! New opening this Friday...

The movie has a FB page, and that's where it says about the re-release.
