But without it, they don't have much of a story to tell. How much can they talk about training? How much trash talk about Beating the other guy down (by posing) is going to capture the audiences attention?
What people don;t realize about the original Pumping Iron, is that it was laid out like a screenplay. You had a antagonist and a hero. But in this case, the antagonist was the insecure one and the hero was somewhat villainous -- and interesting slant.
Then they had a few subplots --
Lou's relationship with an overbearing "stage " father.
Leraning the art of posing.
Even several little subplots such as the naive Mike Katz and the calculating Ken Waller. Franco, the devoted friend . Ed Corny -- the "old" guy. It was also an "American dream" story with foreigners being the ones who succeed.
They even had a third act surprise -- Serge Nubret showing up at the Olympia. It was a brilliantly constructed film.
Just by looking at this one, I get the feeling the producers are not thinking along those lines. This is a film for people who are already fans and just want to see the freaks. Personally, that gets old for me after about 10 minutes. But to each his own.
