what IS it with all of these "carefull couiferred" blue haired old ladies?

they complain about it being too cold, they complain about the ceiling fans messing up their hair, they monopolize the treadmills, plodding along at .5 mph, they complain if the high mounted televisions are not all tuned to regis philburn.........

looks like i will have to find another gym.

Yeah I was going to say exactly that: it looks like it's time for a new gym. That type of atmosphere does no good for your adrenaline and motivation before a big lift.

Hey that's how my gym is! :chomp: Ymca sucks, it's where many many geezers hang out at, but it's affordable and the location is good. I wish Golds gym was around here...

Actually I was at a Gold's Gym in Paramus and it's definitely not the hardcore gym that I was imagining. There was nobody within 200 feet of the squat rack (or even the leg press, for that matter), and there was almost a fight over the cables. On top of that, there are signs everywhere that say "No drinks on gym floor". I'm pretty sure serious gyms would allow water. It was ridiculous.

Wow wtf? gyms are pussified nowadays. NO LOUD BANGING OF WEIGHTS! ;) They should have more serious gyms everywhere, I hear in some gyms have loudness detectors (i think someone on EF mentioned this at their gym) and many gyms have NO DEADLIFTING AND/OR OLYMPIC LIFTING as a rule. I'm starting to think that the old people are the one's complaining that it's too noisy or too messy and smelly, and the gym owners must change to their liking to keep them and their money. It's sad. Those things make me want to have a home gym

I actually enjoy using a gym with the geriatric population because they pretty much stay in the treadmill/cardio section...if your gym has lots of teenagers they just take up to much space in the weight section and leave all their belongings over every piece of equipment, and act like idiots...just a generalization.

I've read that sentence 3 times and it still makes no sense to me
what do you mean, no deadlifting? like, "don't train with corpses"?

You've confused me now lol. Like, you know..where you pull the weight off the floor, I guess they don't want people dropping the weight and making too much noise or something. I don't think they'll allow you to train with corpses..though it's not a rule :p

I'm looking at moving into my parents' "winter condo" on the Gulf for the rest of the summer. There's a great community center facility about 5 blocks down the road. Fantastic eqpt - almost all machines --the free wts may go up to oh, say 30lb? Lots of cardio eqpt. And the last time I went in there in my standard issue gym togs, I got lots of stares. Also I was the youngest there by a good 30 yrs... (I'm 40...)

Good thing I'm focusing on high reps & cardio this summer...

I hate it when they get on the piece of equipment you are using, or take the dumb bells you are using. My friend and I do split sets on things and now it is to the point we have to sit on the bench with the DB's or stay seated on the machine so certain people won't take it. This one old woman kept taking my ab crunch machine, after many dirty stares and grunts and groans and rolling of eyes, she comes in earlier. BUt I don't use it anymore.

One thing does crack me up though, I don't look phsyically fit, nor am I Hercules type of person, but people have a tednancy to see the weight I am using and adding 5 more pounds on it. Such as with the shrug bar or the Routary Cuff Shoulder Press. On my Routery Cuff Press I typically top out with a 45 on each side to do it, and these two other guys that were just using machines saw me doing that, walked over after I was done. I swear I thought he was going to shoot his left nut out of his ass straining so hard. Ended up doing 20 on each side, I heard them complaining that the device must have a big heavier natural weight instead of just the weights on it. And they tried to give me advice on how to do triceps properly that day.

I still smile about it.

tonight i was deadlifting... and not completely dropping the weight... but not realy slowing it in descent... some old guy asks me "hey, dont you think youre messing up the gyms floors doing that?" ... and im like... well whats more important the floors or my BACK???? he walks off ...and then 2 dudes twice my size... that are smith shoulder pressing 135  ....tell me how annoying the noise is... and they give me their suggestions... and i ask them if they deadlift... their response... "oh... i dont have too"... now i dont get mouthy with people... im pretty damn respectful,.. so i just blew them off... but damn i wanted to retort... "oh well you must not realy need to get much stronger then huh..."
this definately belongs in the morons thread... ;)

what is with the old bald bears like you ? you leave back hair all over the place and your bald head leaves grease marks all over the machines........

i like seeing old people in the gym, It inspires me because I want to grow old and still go to the gym.

Both my parents are regulars at their gym - my dad has the longest running membership in his fitness class at the YMCA dating back to the 70s. They're both in their mid - upper 60s and honestly don't look a day over 50 IMO. Although my nephews (2 & 4 yrs old) still run them ragged.

Once i was at my old gym on a monday and all of these high school kids from a certain team took up all seven benches. I waited awhile played basketball with a couple friends so we could get the first open bench. We saw it open so we jogged over and did two sets. Then we went to get a drink of water at the cooler. We came back to see an old man laying down on the bench doing DB flies. I asked him nicely if he was almost done and he told me he had two sets left. I don't have a problem with old people in the gym as long as they don't bother me or try to tell me not to make so much noise with the weights. It just seems every time i go away from my bench, squat rack, and incline bench, someone is over there using it. I'm quick to get back also. I probably take about 40-60 seconds. I guess it's just my luck. As far as old ladies go, I don't pay attention to them. If they do start to make the gym to fit all of there needs without considering how anyone else feels than that is when i get upset. For an example, once a few old ladies were walking the treadmill and a friend and i decided to do some cardio also. They had it on Maury and i asked them if they would mind if i switched the station the sportscenter, since i thought it would be more appropriate at a gym, and the guys around were sick of having maury and the view on every evening. They told me, "If you don't like what were watching, then you don't have to watch it." "No one's making you stay here." I stepped off the treadmill and went over to the owner. I nicely asked him if he minded if i switched it to sportscenter. He agreed that it would be fine. But then i told him the old ladies over there wouldn't let me switch the station. He told me that i should let go of it. The old ladies were there first so they should get to watch what they want. So i went over and played some basketball.
It just bothers me sometimes that some old folks think they should always get what they want. They think that they are "special" and in charge of everything.
This isn't every old person, just some. Many old people i meet are kind and aren't like this. But it just irritates me the way some people act. I believe that everyone deserves the same rights as anyone else. Regardless of race, gender, or age.
I'm not against old people at all. I just believe that if i pay the same amount of cash as they do every month to work out, i should be able to do what i want. And if i want to watch sportscenter, i should be able to every once and awhile.
