First day of jiu jitsu

Today me and my buddy went to our college club jiu jitsu program to check it out. A 1-striped brown belt showed us the beginner stuff- front falls, side falls, rolls and then a few escapes from hands - on - wrists.

They work a real belt system and they told us we would need a notebook to write down exactly every move we learn step by step.

Anyone from NJ that studies JJ or BJJ - around central Jerz?

great! falling with rolling is so important, it gets neglected by a lot of arts. When you get good at doing it on the mat, switch to a harder surface. When you can do that, practice rolling from pushes. Eventually you can get really crazy and roll multiple times or switch directions during a roll or spring forward into a roll.

i tell new comers all the time that they will only get as good as there falling..

if you cant fall well i cant fight you agressively or at my true skill level.. ill have to baby you and you wont get good at defending or attacking..

so falling is key for not only your own safety but for your own improvement

you have to get thrown a lot...i really dont think there is any other way

I agree getting thrown is the only way to get good at falling. Man I remember when I practiced falling I swear I got threw 100 times at least. Made fopr some sore body parts those first couple of days.

you can't just do some basic falls on your own?
as if you were thrown or taken down?
I knwo when we practice take downs it really sucks
cus I'm always the one getting taken down

now most of my experience is with throws not take downs and there are some differences..

there are things you can do to practice on your own but i think for the most part you have to get thrown..

we do things like rolling backwards from a kneeling/squatting position.. then from standing.. and then to the side from standing..

but the fastest/best way imo is to just use a basic hip throw repeatedly over and over starting very very slowly and then picking up speed as you go
