Fighters & Athletes - Morning Warmup?

Tom Treutlein

As a fighter or athlete, do you feel it would be adequate and maybe even helpful to perform bodyweight exercises every morning as a way to warmup one's body for daily activities and to allow a level of endurance and fitness maintained at all times?

I figure this would include: Pushups, pullups, crunches, squats, heel raises. All with bodyweight only.

I'm not sure of the benefits of doing a general warmup like that, but there is some science behind doing dynamic stretching in the morning.

Thomas Kurz, author of "Science of Sport Training" and "Stretching Scientifically" states that by doing dynamic stretching in the morning, you effectively reset the neural pathways; now, that's MY explanation. He does a much better job :) Basically, it lets your muscles stretch to maximum length without a warmup---so it would be valuable to martial artists.

To get the full details, I'd say check out his books or just google his name.

I HATE working out in the morning, and even doing a general warmup and dynamic stretching pushes it. But there's no question it works.

NO.

If you have to train in the morning this is when you should be working on fighting skills if your schedule allows it. Basically in the morning you are the most fresh and mentally ready to either learn new techniques or practice previously learned techniques. By the end of the day most people are wiped out due to daily stresses ect...

For example in College I had off from 11-3 MWF and saturday all day off. In the morning I would take blistering hot showers and lather up in Icy hot and go to class for an hour and a half 9-10:30. Then I would go to the gym and start boxing or grappling depending on which day for about an hour at most. I would rest up and eat and about at 8pm I would lift weights for 30 minutes and then stretch for 10minutes. Conditioning work was rotated in for stretching when needed

Well then Suston, do you think it would be counter-productive? I just feel it gets me up a bit better and warms my body up for the day.

I could always stretch for 5-10 minutes or do something else real quick in the AM. Just like taking a shower, makes you feel all ready to tackle a new day. For me at least.

I just don't want to do anything that will hinder training.

I don't think it is counter productive to some, but if you are starting to learn a certain art I would warm-up at practice. I would not train BW excercises due to fatigue of CNS or muscles before training.

Example: if I have Grappling practice at 1pm, I woul not be doing cardio in the AM or weight training cause it would take away from my primary objective of learning grappling. This excludes light walking and stretching to increase blood flow to reduce soreness from previous workouts, I would try not break a sweat or raise my heart rate too much. Then later on at night I would etiher weight train, compound explosive movements or perform cardio.

Warming up is ok, but having a workout before is not good IMO

Alright, cool. Just what I wanted to hear. It's freezing outside, and I'd find it easier to do a handful of pushups and bodyweight squats just to warmup my entire body and get blood flowing. That was the entire purpose of it, really. Not to make it a morning workout.

right now i wake up early to get in 1000 foot sweeps and then about 500 squats as well as some stretching and general warmups and then do some grip training on my morning commute..

if you just want a decent warmup to get yourself going i think its a great idea.. i feel way more awake and dont need caffeine to get me going..

good luck
