I just found it odd that when 90% of the population has them that so many people on here would think that they are the plague.

There are different strains of the herpes virus. Just because you have had a cold sore does not mean you have genital herpes. It's a different thing.

There are also other conditions such as mouth ulcers, etc that are not caused by a virus at all, and she may have had that.
