Fat burning...

I was talking to my buddy today about wanting to get rid of the gut, but it being hard eating a lot trying to build muscle. He told me he took ephedrine (sp?) or something similiar sounding to that and said it worked pretty well for him. I remember reading that that stuff was banned or something like that at least around here, so I was looking for some recommendations on what to take. I just checked my BF% on a scale that I'm not sure works properly, but it said 26. I'm mainly concerned with just getting rid of the extra fat around my waist. I'm not sure if this a problem, but I also take creatine so I wouldn't want it to interfer with that. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm 6'2" 200lbs if that makes any difference.

Thanks,
PJ

Check your diet first, then worry about supplements. Post it up

Amen. I took ephedra for a couple years thinking it would be a magical fat-burning pill. Since I stopped using it about five months ago and made changes to my diet, the fat burning has improved tenfold. Diet is WAY more important than any supplements, especially for someone who's new to the game like yourself. :)

I'm starting to realize that.

Here's what a normal day consists of after taking some advice from this board.

11AM 2-3 eggs 46g 100% whey protein shake with 7g pro lab creatine
2PM Chicken or meat grilled on my foreman grill, with 46g protein shake (the chicken I've been eating lately is 29g of protein a serving which isn't too bad)
5:30-6PM Chicken or meat in some fashion and some potatoes or maybe a big salad with some chicken & 46g protein shake
8PM Lift
9:30PM 46g protein shake with 7g creatine
11:30PM power bar or something small to snack on

It varies from day to day, but that's what I shoot for and on days I don't lift I normally only have one less shake for whatever reason. And instead of the chicken or meat I might go out for a Subway sub or something of that nature. Granted, I've only started this type of regiment within the last couple of weeks. Before I was eating like I normally have for the last 20 years of my life, just eating whatever was cheap, available, or what I had a taste for.

I don't know if it's the new diet, the new creatine, or the new lifting plan I'm using but it's working, I feel great (just went to the doc and had a 112/70 BP), consistently throwing up more weight, but the chub around my waist is unrelenting. It kills me, too, because I was very active up until the age of 16 and always had a 6-pack just due to my active lifestyle. Once college and beer got into the picture I really left myself go unfortunately, but instead of regreting being lazy I'm trying to fix those mistakes.

Also.....Tanita type bf% scales are not accurate when measuring body fat. Good news is you're probably lower bf than that.

That also seems like a bit too much creatine in my opinion. From a lot of the research I have done and people I have talked with. 5g of creatine a day is all you need.

the bottle says 5g twice a day, i put in a little extra in case i don't drink it all because it seems to clump in the bottom of the glass. Days I'm not lifting I only have it once a day.

Do you do any cardio? Next to diet some type of aerobic exercise is key to fat loss. Potatoes aren't very good for someone trying to loose fat, either. It has an extremely high glycemic index and spikes insulin like mad. I would also suggest cutting out that Powerbar at night. Powerbars are simply a candy bar, not for someone trying to loose fat.

Let me guide you to the mistakes oyu commented.

a) I see you combine meats with protein shakes. Your body will not handle anymore than 50 grams of protein in one sitting, this means you are either wasting chicken or wasting the yummy powder. Have on or the other.

b) power bar before bed is a terrible idea. One must eat for what one is about to do, not what you just did (there is an exeption which is post-training) and even more improtantly, power bars are entirely sugary and empty in value. If you want to eat some b4 bed, I suggest it be either a fat/protein combination such as tuna+litemayo or a protein shake done with water and ice, and not milk.

c) eliminating fat completely is not good either. Just aim/shoot for making atleast half of ur fat intake, HEALTHY FAT intake such as peanuts/nut butter, lite mayo, and others, do some online reading.
